How do you balance your fly fishing rod, and where is the balance point on your cork handle?
Optimally, the location of the balance point would be where the major section of your rod starts bending. Still, slight differences in reel versus rod-blank weight may displace this point in either the top rod direction or towards the rod butt direction. As the casting stroke is carried out, the rod's bending may start a bit further up the blank or all the way down under the cork, and the specific bending profile may, to some extent, also depend on the casting style.
Buying a heavy reel can be limiting for the natural reason that you cannot reduce its weight, while a more lightweight reel can be provided with small adhesive weights that provide it with a few grams extra weight. The Saracione reels are on the heavier side, but as mounted on the Sage Method 8126 (189 grams rod weight 8/9), it balances the Sage rod perfectly fine, and the heavier weight provides a bit more punch at the bottom of the stroke. The same reel on another rod named the G Loomis NRX 12.6 ft (235 grams rod weight 9/10) also feels good, while the weight distribution impacts the feeling when casting. In reality, this means that a 30-40 grams difference in rod weight is not deciding which reel weight to go for because the rod weight distribution may be different over the blank. However, if in doubt, and you can choose between a heavier and a more lightweight reel doing the same job, always go for the lighter version because it can be weighted up if you feel it is too lightweight.
The weight of the Saracione reel is 326 grams of 11.5 ounces (Mark V), # 3 3/4 size.
