Jennnweke, Hi :) Love your comment. You are so right! It's who you are on the inside. :) Hope you don't mind but I'd like to share my take on what it means to be a hippie, coming from one who grew up in the '60s & '70s. It's what I've learned by looking back. Peace. Just my opinion but to be a hippie is to in every way, be yourself. Much easier said than done. In today's society just like back in the 60s & 70s, we humans put up shields of protection and display socially acceptable thoughts and behavior while in the process we separate ourselves from our true selves. We live a full or partial lie so we can belong and get along. I believe to be a true hippie one must drop their shields of protection & become one with the true condition of their soul. This requires a spiritual journey inwards and is really a lot harder than it sounds. Uncovering the deep, often painful experiences trapped in our soul can lead to painful feelings and emotions but that's the price one pays for cleaning out all the garbage we're saddled with as part of growing up. Right or wrong, back then we used drugs to explore ourselves while I believe many young people today use drugs to escape. [Please understand I'm not promoting drugs as a way to grow. Drugs are not necessary.] It's only when we become one with the true condition of our soul that we can confront its contents and fully heal. Once healed we learn to love ourselves and only then can we truly love others. Peace & love was all about the inner journey, the search for the truth that can only be found within. As flower children and spiritual hippie beings, we sought to become one with mother earth and share our newfound awareness with others in our generation. As history has recorded, we were successful on a personal level but not with the majority of our peers. While we were promoting our best idea of inner peace, spiritual love, and the keys to a happy life, the bulk of our generation was out buying up the then establishment. Now they own it. In the big picture, we lost & they won. However, I don't regret the time spent searching my soul, discovering myself, and living life in a reflection of my own discovered truth. To be a hippie is to be yourself. You're alive inside! Do all you can to let your true self out. P*E*A*C*E [End all war] [Especially the war that rages from within.]

I really love your interpretation of what a hippie is. I always think about in terms of being a free-spirit, like you mentioned. Admittedly, I turn into a little bit of a gate-keeper when I see people throw the term around when talking about fashion. I think dressing like a hippie and being a hippie are two different things (although neither of them are a bad thing). It really isn’t that important though, like you said. It can be self-defined or just a general term.

To me, hippie is a lifestyle. And a very vague at that. I know some metal heads, yogis, artists, culturalists, spiritualists, heavy Christians, animal lovers, music lovers, peoppe who just love going to the pub and getting drunk 😂 and I see a lil hippie in all of them because they are all kind, caring people who just accept other humans for being the way they are. They never question or argue with others for their choices or lifestyles, they never judge or ridicule, they accept and love NO MATTER WHAT! When they learn something new that resonates with them, they use it for good and kindness.. They also don't have problems being wrong or accepting. In fact most of my hippie friends just believe in everyone having a right to their own opinions and that opinions cannot be wrong. They are wonderful and beautiful people and I am so happy to share my life with all of them. X

Being a hippie isn’t your looks, what you look like, how you dress, none of that. Its not an idea, its not a trend. Being a hippie was about peace, love, and against war. They rivaled against anything they stood against, they had stakeouts, they spreaded their beliefs & stood by. You believe in love thy neigbor type of thing, no judgement. Just incase people or youngins were confused.

@@cheyann4291 I’m speaking common sense. Hippies were pursuing an idea about making peace and love. That’s an idea in purest form, cause it can never be achieved, it can only be dreamed about. Plus, it is a fashionable trend in a way, cause you don’t see hippies outside their habitats (like festivals or travel groups) dressing that hippy due to society’s pressure to fit in, a.k.a being a complete opposite of what hippy culture tries to represent. As an idea it can be eternal, but as a fashion it is a trend that goes away and then returns. I’m just correcting you in a positive way.

@@onthesideof4 no you do, i see hippies quite often. Again its not about how you look, its a personality thing, its a morality thing, what you believe in etc. We aren’t like mormans like we stick to our own community lmao and the “fashion trend” your talking about is the style that was in the 70’s that people who were at woodstock and were burnt out on drugs would wear also was the style to were bell bottoms and flower crowns and john lennon type glasses. As cool as it'd be to me if you did just recreate that 60s/70s hippie look so well, I think the fact that you view the actual spirit and ideology of being a hippie as more important than just an aesthetic is way cooler to me. Those hippies from the original movement who are still alive and who maintain the same values they did 50 years ago would be much more touched that this was what you cared about the most, not just imitating how they dressed without caring about any of their actual ideas like the party-costume version of a hippie they must have seen so often.

If you love the beautiful clothes they wore. Just wear them. I am 56, I still wear the same clothes I did back when I was 16. Never used a suit or tie. Just recently I bought shirts and started using t shirts written nothing in them. And short hair looks great on me. Short hair for my last 20 years. But now I look old, I tinted my hair, I am not fat. I am looking old, I just when celebration of my birthday I just say I don't celebrate anymore or being old sucks. I also complain about the smartphones and the uncultured generation last 20 years. Just sometimes you can find people think the same I do. Very rare. Maybe was better to be a straight person. My life could be more comfortable. Actually I live like a dog. Following values of simple life, even been an intelligent person, I left my university course, no graduation, I became a factory worker earning few money. Changed jobs 100 times voz didn't like the factory atmosphere, now I am unemployed. Also I travelled the world 49 countries, i worked in 6 different countries. All in on budget. Cheers from Italy.

Hello there!:- just some gentle observations from a "Boomer" who was 16 in 1967 and observed hippies first-hand although never really participated in that cultural phenomenon:- I can see why, as a 20-something idealistic young person you would be fascinated by the hippie era but please don't go overboard on misplaced nostalgia. Yes, there were a lot of colorful cultural and artistic aspects to hippie culture which were an expression of youthful exuberance and creativity and unconventionality which still resonate with young folks today but you also need to understand the very nasty side of "hippieness". The era from 1914 to 1974 was an era of sexism and subjugation of women cause by the demographic imbalances of WW1 and WW2 which killed off a lot of young men and left a lot of young women looking always for boyfriends and husbands resulting in a "golden age" of women's fashion but also extreme sexism and the hippie men were the worst sexists of all who expected young women to be their always-willing sex objects:- you might notice that most of the hippies in old photos are men with fewer women simply because hippie culture badly degraded women who tended to keep their distance as a result. Hippies were also very obsessed with hedonism and wallowing in "free sex" (good for men, not so much for women!), drugs, irresponsibility in general, and hippie culture attracted a disproportionate number of sociopaths who took fiendish delight in hurting other people:- it was a culture which flourished mainly among the adult children of wealthy parents who would financially support their kids but it was really closed to working-class young people who had to pay their own way through life. Yes, it also was a vehicle for youthful idealism and some very colorful cultural expressions which still appeal to young folks today but it had its sh**ty side too and honestly if you could time-travel back there you would not like much of what you would encounter back there and you would soon become disillusioned:- you certainly would not enjoy being a "groupie" and a kind of group concubine to a bunch of manipulative drug-soaked men because that's all that they would allow you to be. It was also very much a youthful phenomenon and hippies did not age well and those who tried to remain hippies past 25 started morphing into "silly old farts" (and "silly old fartesses" as in the "Fartess of Mimico"!). So, it's alright to take an interest in that era and its unique culture but please don't go overboard in trying to actually relive it, it's gone for good and for very good reasons. I see that you're in Canada and if you are in southern Ontario you might visit Killaloe, Ontario and make friends with all the elderly ex-hippies and counterculture types living there who can explain a lot to you and perhaps you might even explore the possibility of starting a hippie memorabilia shop to cater to the ongoing retro interest in hippie culture and quaint little Killaloe would certainly love you for bringing some new life and tourist traffic and you might even become the new "Queen of Killaloe". Keep well! 🙂
