One thing I really love about the lances relative simplicity is that it lets you focus on the monsters moveset. To be honest, the Lance never bored me because I could always focus on getting hit less or observing the monster more carefully instead of having my attention split up between the enemy and all sorts of gauges and charging levels. All its bonus moves are very satisfying, but it always feels like an actual lance (well, aside from the slap move) and switching between more defensive turtling and more aggressive playstyles makes it extremely versatile. It feels like the one of the least "gimmicky" weapons in the series.

Found you a couple of weeks ago and just wanted to say that I really love your way of explaining things :) I just wanted to add a couple of little tad things to the video for people who may not know this (and sorry if you explained it somewhere and I missed it): 1. Whenever you successfully counter thrust, you can hold forward (I think) in order to do a mid-thrust instead of a high-thrust. 2. Insta-Block can get pretty crazy and in theory, as long as the frames allow it, can be chained infinitely. I have a video on Apex Zinogre which is bonkers on one of his ulti attacks (shameless plug over, sorry :D) 3. You can trigger Insta-Block or instantly guard while being sheathed as well. This applies to every weapon that has a shield, though. 4. Insta-Blocks cross-sweep has a very long "end-lag". You can drag it out a very long time (a couple of seconds) before actually doing the sweep. This helps alot with positioning the attack as well as waiting for the monsters potential follow-up attacks. Anyways love your video on the Lance! Keep it going, very glad to have found your channel :D

Oh also since people are giving out tips, I’ll give one too. As incredible as the squire’s belt is, I’ve found that the health regen from Malzeno’s waist is absolutely amazing, especially in fights you’re not comfortable with. This has also become an easier tradeoff with the advent of Qurious crafting and the ridiculous Violet Mizu legs.

Incoming wall of text: If you've gotten all the way up to MR 10, the Violet Mizutsune armor set is stellar for Lance - at least everything except the helmet. Wearing the chest, arms, waist and legs nets you maximum ranks in Agitator, Stamina Surge, Flinch Free and Weakness Exploit, as well as 2 ranks in Offensive Guard and 1 in Adrenaline Rush. The head, if you're interested, gives 1 rank in Adrenaline Rush and 3 ranks in Evade Extender, which I think is overkill. Plus, you get a nice variety and number deco slots to work with - head gives 4-1-1, chest is 3-2-1, arms are 2-2-2, waist is 2-2-1, and legs are 4-0-0 - all without Qurious Crafting. But most important to the set is its exclusive Embolden armor skill, which the chest, arms and waist each give one rank in. When you are targeted by a monster (you'll know this because you'll get a popup saying that the skill activated), they have a greater chance of becoming enraged. In addition, you get +10 defense and the equivalent of having Guard 2 and Evade Window 2 for one rank, +20 defense and Guard 3 and Evade Window 3 for two ranks, and +40 defense, Guard 5 and Evade Window 5 for the maximum of three. Also, Embolden _stacks_ with Guard and Evade Window. Indeed, there are actually TEN effective ranks in Guard, which I believe just wielding a Lance gives you two effective ranks, if I'm not mistaken. A Lancer with Guard 3 and Embolden 3 gives you "effective Guard" 10 when a monster is targeting you! This makes you pretty much immovable against attacks that don't need Guard Up to block, and you use next to no stamina against even the hardest hit...and then it comes back really fast thanks to Stamina Surge! Granted, if you don't WANT to use Embolden, the legs alone give 3 ranks in Flinch Free, two in Weakness Exploit and two in Offensive Guard, making it an excellent part of any Embolden-less Lance set.

There’s actually something you forgot to mention about Twin Vine. When you’re jumping towards the monster, but before you do that little hop when you reach it or before you do the aerial attack, you actually have I-Frames for the entirety of that jump. Combined with the increased guard, it makes Twin Vine a surprisingly useful and kind of underrated Switch Skill.

One small thing to mention about skyward thrust is that if you are on a steep enough slope or fall off a ledge after the lance hits the ground, it reduces the end lag significantly. It's situational obviously, but this works off of usual jump ledges, most moderate inclines and I believe even the monster's hurt box if it drags you away.

Nice video! One thing I'd like to add is that counter thrust's guard doesn't have the long endlag that normal guard has caused by a heavy knockback (contrary to Iceborne's counter I believe). It was quite useful in base Rise when Instablock and anchor rage weren't as effective, but it still has its situational uses nowadays imo.

After watching again I noticed that your description on how anchor rage calculates the buff it gives is incorrect. The way you described it is how it used to work in base rise. Now however, the buff is calculated using the base damage of the attack you block, and by base damage I mean the damage the move does without any modifiers like Advanced title quests or afflicted. This is because it would probably result in yellow buff for everything otherwise. An example I use a lot to describe how its changed is Diablos roar. This move in base rise used to give a yellow buff because of the huge knockback it causes but now as of Sunbreak it only gives a red buff which is due to the fact that the roar does zero damage.
@Voidwalker0

Amazing video, thanks for this. When you said the Sheathing Retreat has "a decent period of invulnerability" I interpreted that as a forgiving time window to do it and safely get out of the way. But...I haven't had much success avoiding explosions like the afflicted ones. Your video proves it can be done, but I think the window to do it is much more tight than what it sounded like. I'm only picking up Lance again for Sunbreak so I just need more practice lol.
@Gobuls_Lantern

very true, sheathing retreat has 40 frames of invulnerability at 60fps (20 frames at 30fps if you're on the switch). its definitely not the biggest invulnerability window in the game, but its a largest one that lance has access to. practice is probably for the best. in the mean time you could always bring guard up to block the afflicted explosions normally, just make sure you have enough health to survive blocking the attack before you commit to it!

You forgot to mention two other reasons why you shouldn't use Twin Vine. 1. The initial kunai stabbing animation's hitbox is painfully small, making it too easy to accidentally miss the stab even when point blank on account of the monster slightly moving its body away from you. The stabbing animation is also painfully long. 2. The tether on Twin Vine is incredibly easy to break, especially in multiplayer. Magnamalo, for example, can break your Twin Vine tether by simply doing one of its ludicrous airdashes to try to reach another player. He'll do this before you even have the chance to react and stay close in order to keep the Twin Vine tether active.

To your 2nd point, I've seen JP players mess with it and there is a timer before the line is broken. If you buffer the leap, and nothing gets in your way, you'll always travel far and fast enough to reset the timer. This allows you to keep up with land monsters entering hyper speed when zone transitioning, which is pretty cool if impractical.

This is biased as someone who always plays with Guard 5 when possible (fits my playstyle better) but from my opinion so far, on TU1 I was reasonably easily able to get Atk 7, 100% affinity, crit boost 3 and Offensive guard 3. In TU2, which is what you asked, with the Violet Mizu skill on rank 3 I dont need the guard 5, and the three pieces already come with agitator 5 weakness exploit 2, offensive guard 2 and a LOT of deco slots. There's definitely room for better qurio augments and decoration minmaxing, as I feel 1 point in guard is fine enough for when not getting targeted (though you can probably just not even have any guard levels) but currently my set is now at guard 3 (too much), agitator 5, atk boost 7, crit boost 3, W.E. 3, offensive guard 3 and I believe I had some leftover slots I put in random stuff like guard up 3. I might minmax it more but it certainly boosted my damage by a lot when the monster enrages and has even more leftover slots to do stuff with. If nothing, at the bare minimum use the boots. 2 W.E and 2 Offensive guard, is too beautiful to pass on considering it can often be very awkward to slot in Offensive guard (since it's rank 3). iirc correctly the gloves or the waist piece are really impressive too. I'm not a turtler (as in I don't just hold block and attack once every few minutes), but the comfort of guard 5 was something I always loved in previous games, and the 4 pieces (the three with the new skill plus the boots) let me keep that comfort, enrage the monster faster for challenger, and do some tasty amount of damage. For reference my lv90~110(previously 100 obviously) Qurio investigations went from 10~14 mins to a comfortable 8~12 mins, sometimes I stop for birds if I feel like it, sometimes I stop to PM people on discord and whatnot, so I'm really happy with that range on the timer. I'm somewhat waiting to see what other people (the 'minmaxers' so to speak, but I don't mean that word in a bad way) craft up to see if maybe I try a different lance or if I can rearrange my decorations in a better way, but this armor set is probably staying on me for a long while. Also I speak a lot. Sorry.

Started MH in World, was bored of the triple poke infinite combo and settled for PR SnS in Iceborne. Started Rise with SnS, have to re-learn how to SnS. When I get back to lance after a lot of Bullet Barrage, and Shoryu spammed in Sunbreak, I can't see myself switching to any other weapons, outside of the occasional elemental piercing HBG fun. Really love the added tools in Rise and Sunbreak. How the tables have turned.

I’m a LS main and I’m honestly switching weapons because I’m tired of my counters not doing damage, it’s crazy how buggy it can be. Watched this video and now I’m gonna try Lance now that I have learned there is a lot more to it! AMAZING Video!

This vid is good for the 'Low # of attacks/big damage number' style of Lance, or "meta". But not other forms of Lance. Still a good vid nonetheless!

23:16. "Insta Block's biggest weakness is that it's so fun." I love Insta Block but let's be honest here. An actual big weakness Insta Block has is the horizontal hitbox on its follow-up cross slash that makes it so easy to accidentally damage hitzones you didn't intend to damage. Charged Wide Sweep has the exact same issue. It's why Lance speedrunners lose so many precious seconds in their personal best runs because the cross slash (or the Charged Wide Sweep) accidentally damages a shitzone. Also, because the follow-up cross slash after an Insta Block is a two-hit combo, it's easy to accidentally get a monster to flinch after the first hit, thus making your second (and more damaging) hit miss. I want Insta Block to come back for Monster Hunter 6, but I want it to have a more precise hitbox for the follow-up attack instead of this Monster Hunter Generations legacy move.
