If you are unfamiliar with the threats our planet is facing, please watch our Environmental Threats video: • Environmental Threats ...
Ever since I was a kid, I have always been incredibly anxious about the threats to animals and the environment. I would lose sleep over how much trash I was creating and running around the house making sure every light and TV was off. It never made me feel better because I was just one kid, how was I supposed to protect the WHOLE planet?
If you have ever felt like this, you are not alone and… guess what? YOU can play a big part in protecting the planet by living sustainability.
Sustainability is the practice of doing things in a way that protects the environment. You can shop sustainability by buying things that were made without harming the environment. You can live sustainability by thinking about how to protect the environment in your day-to-day life.
Today, we are going to talk about how you can become a sustainable kid and help save the world. The regular ways, and then the extra ways.
Use less water:
This is important because water is finite! By using less, we can make sure that we won't run out in the future.
Simple ways you can use less water are:
~Taking shorter showers
~Turning the water off when brushing your teeth
~Re-wear your gently worn clothes so you don’t have to do as much laundry
~Check for leaks!
Use less energy:
This is important because energy is often created by burning greenhouse gases, which can cause climate change.
You can use less energy by…
~Taking shorter showers (Water takes energy to heat, so taking a hot shower uses water AND energy!)
~Turning off TVs and lights when not in use
~Shopping sustainability saves energy, too, because new clothes and toys take energy to make
~~Buy less
~~Buy reused
~~Buy recycled (metal, paper, etc.)
Learn your local recycling laws:
Every town and city has their own recycling rules, make sure you investigate yours! If your neighbors are doing it wrong, make posters or flyers!
Adopt an animal or make a donation
From a zoo, aquarium, or conservation organization
Get out in nature:
When you explore nature, bring a plastic bag to pick up garbage! Make sure you give animals space.
Write to your local government:
~Request more reusable energy options
~Research environmental issues in your area!
Educate your friends and family!
