Speaking of getting players to engage I tried a new technique about two months ago and it has been working a treat. I told my players they did not have to roleplay, but if they did just describing what they were doing on skill checks would make the DC go down, and if they came up with something really clever it would go down farther. This is a group that has a very spotty roleplay habit and takes a lot of encouragement from me, so much so that I feel exhausted after a session sometimes. I am a person with limited energy so this was a problem. Since implementing the change they have been getting bolder and bolder. They are laughing more and after playing together for three years getting to know each other. It has seemed strange to me why this group of people keeps coming to my home and playing every week yet hasn't made friends with each other. Of course, now we are looking at online options. Keep healthy all.

Great episode. The title is a bit clickbaity but it actually helps frame the discussion well. As you guys said, the win condition in Dnd isn't to beat the game, it is to have fun at the table and you can "win" Dnd even more if you help elevate your experience and the experience of those around you. As a DM I love me a proactive player. By all means, engage with my world and the players around you. It isn't metagaming it creates a more interesting story. I do agree that knowing the rules is its own subsection of winning the game though. Maintaining good pacing is one of the things I focus on most as a DM and nothing slows the game down more than rules referencing and players learning about what their character can do as their turn is happening. The DM needs to do a lot behind the scenes to make the game run smoothly so a little preparedness on the player's part goes a long way.

I mean to do this, then I forget. I looked at character sheets to try to find skills or something else I could engage the players, but the module isn't necessarily helping. Like, the wizard has Arcana, what can I do to have them roll that check? My party has a cleric, a fighter, a barbarian, and a wizard. So, each party member can bring different strengths, and I as DM want to address them.

What you say at the end (26:00-28:00) is almost too hard to explain to people who haven't experienced it. I've DM'd for 40 years and there is nothing that makes a better experience than having *enthusiastic* players -- the kind who make the game a party, not just make up a party in the game. It is soul-draining to have players that expect to be spoon-fed everything and/or aren't really interested in being there.
@TheGreatLordApples

I feel like I've become a worse player as I've played more and more. Yes, I know more about the game but a lot of what I used to do to be inclusive I stopped doing. After a while of trying to include others it gets tiring seeing that they either: get annoyed at being put in the spotlight because they weren't paying attention or hold up the game trying to do the single perfect thing. I like working with others, but there are so many ways to include people and what's the point of putting in the effort for people who won't appreciate it? I'm someone who's been accused of being too much of a main character by the group, but when I don't do the things they complain about, we don't make progress. It's a big ol loop where the more I do, the more fun most of us have, but the less fun a few of the group have and I don't know what they want out of me. It's frustrating.
@precariousplays9469
4 жыл бұрын
That's a tough spot to be in. I can tell you from personal experience: That is an out-of-game conversation. Don't try to fix this kind of thing at the table; between sessions, just speak frankly to the players taking offense to you driving the game forward. On the other hand, you should also take careful note of your own behavior. For example: How long are you really waiting for others to act? When you say that the game isn't moving forward, have you considered that the other players might be dwelling on a part of the game they enjoy that you see as less valuable or not worth the groups time? In the end, you might just value different things. If playing D&D with certain people is disheartening or stressful, you should consider looking for a different game to play with them, or a different group to play D&D with.

that statement about unlearning to want something from the game. . . groups falling apart... so many... the only thing keeping me tethered to that old way of thinking is my fiend pact warlock. he has now survived 2 group collapses and canonically was the sole survivor of a TPK and 1 of 2 in a near TPK its been me the dm and his friend who is also a dm through it all so far. he is funny enough a character with a goal he was never meant to achieve until the campaign ended but now he is one of my only characters with a goal they even have a chance at at all. funny how in a meta sense he lives up to his virtue name he is lasting, going farther than all the others.
