I remember being called ugly a lot in primary school and it really hurt me so bad but now I’m over it… but as a child I had very low self esteem and because I had extra help in primary school people were also calling me dumb. It was so bad for me to deal with this. Now I’m a full grown adult I don’t care anymore but because this video is about ugliness and feeling confident so just thought to share how my experience was. I just came back from a ayahuasca retreat and one of the biggest things I gained was self love (respect). During my journey I LITERALLY saw how words vibrate with energy and colors. Calling yourself anything less than what you deserve is profoundly impactful. Since the energy of those words is coming directly from the source (you) it causes far more impact on your inner child then you may think. Look up “saying hate vs love to a flower” so you can see what I’m referring to visually. I will never again say mean things to myself or call myself anything less than what I would call the little girl that lives inside of me and the one that lives inside of you. Don’t allow society standards to FOOL you into believing the lie that you are not enough in comparison to because there will never EVER be another you. ❤

Being 'conventionally beautiful' is in fact a bit of a false start in life. There are many reasons why I was never considered conventionally beautiful, but it gave me a chance to work on all of the other qualities needed to be an attractive person. Whether the view of beauty is Eurocentric or not, beauty is inherently exclusionary… it’s a hierarchy which can only exist if there are people at the bottom who are not beautiful… therefore there are always going to be ugly people. So I prefer her approach of embracing “ugliness” and being confident in that, because even in an anti-racist world, there will still be a bottom to that hierarchy, and those people will benefit from this message. Imo it’s more confident to reject the lie that we should strive to be beautiful, than to redefine beauty to include more black and brown faces

I grew up with my mom’s family…full of beautiful women/ girls…who look like you. When I was young, I wanted SO badly to look like them… to fit in... In my mother’s family medium and dark brown skin is “normal”. Due to my much lighter complexion I felt different…I didn’t feel like I fit in… and at the time, my definition of ugly was looking different from the people I most loved. And on top of that, to cover it up with some fake confidence. This is embarrassing! Beauty is as beauty does. And beauty comes from the Almighty God radiating through you, not some silly "self-help" rules to help you love yourself better. If you don't know the only one Who knows you better than you ever could (because He created you), then you will never be able to truly love yourself. Stop tearing down your features, belittling your skin color, tearing down your hair, shaming your body, lumping others who look like you in with you, and doing all of this in front of the world. I have a different perspective...I think beauty does exist in the sense that we as humans find various things/people attractive. We get a hit of dopamine when we see something we like and makes us feel positive emotions. Beauty according to societal standards is a construct as a whole. That is something I don't believe a person has to participate in. Beauty is literally in the eye of the beholder and what they personally define as attractive. Calling someone beautiful as like a way to make a person feel better about themselves is what I feel could be approached differently. If you sincerely find them attractive, then the compliment would be fine. But if you truly don't and you just want them to feel better, idk. That's not necessarily a bad thing, to want to make someone feel better about themselves. But maybe not if it's stemmed from a lie. Maybe just encourage and affirm how they feel about themselves, which hopefully is positive.

We get that, but the point is she's not ugly *conventionally* either, in the most literal, superficial and common interpretation. I completely agree about following ppl who look like you. I got off of social media and started looking at pinterest; only pinning bodies that look like mine. There is not only one type of beauty; but there is the European American beauty standard and also body trends. Personality and confidence has so much to do with beauty; yet it's so hard to develop these aspects of ourselves when ppl look down on us and don't agree that we are beautiful, just as a soul and a human. It's like we don't look like the beauty standard so it's okay to treat us like garbage; and so we start treating ourselves like garbage too. We have to challenge the beauty standard by truly seeing our own beauty and not allowing others to take that away from us. We are going to die one day, show your daughters what real beauty is.

You should hate your parents for passing on their undesirable genes to you, and not superficial men such as myself. We can't help it if we're sexually attracted ONLY to sexually attractive women. It's nature. You shouldn't have been treated with such contempt during your your adult life, and I'm sorry you were. But most of all, you shouldn't have treated yourself with contempt, because that's what you did. You grew to despise yourself, and as a result, you tormented yourself. I'm sick and tired of yall missing the point and lying in the comments. Yall know damn well how people view women that look like her and how they treat her. This is my first time I'm on your channel and I am glad you are confident regardless. A lot if yall fake in the comments for likes while invalidating her experiences. Thank you for this video by the way. More young people need to hear this so they can stop hating themselves over things they can't change! Came back to edit my comment because the way yall took it is hella woozers. Kiyanna isn't ugly. Anyone with eyes CAN SEE she isn't ugly. The point is people with features like hers and mine (we have similar features and we are both dark skin black women) are perceived a certain way in the Western Hemisphere and that is the goddamn truth. Some of yall projected your insecurities on my comment and called her ugly which revealed more about YOU than me. Anyways what I love about her video that makes it so different from the rest of the videos with "ugly" in the title is for these reasons: 1. She fully accepts herself for who she is 2. She is not hung up on what she looks like 3. It takes strength to be vulnerable without pitying one's self and that is what she did amazingly which is why I still think about her vid and rewatch it because it was that impactful. The reason I called a lot of yall fake is because while she us trying to get away from defining her worth on her looks yall still centering it around beauty. Yall are fake as shit in the comments because despite this girl taking 11 minutes or more if her time explaining her stance yall busy arguing in the comments about where she ranks on the stupid 1 to 10 scale, if her skin is smooth enough, whose features she got instead of paying attention to the words she said. She didn't call herself ugly and neither did I, but here you guys go again bringing back this beauty garbage. To be frank, us strangers on the internet calling her cute, average, gorgeous, or ugly would not change her life experiences. Her choices and her confidence will. Women don't need to be told we are beautiful, we need to be told we are worthy regardless because we are. It is really that Simple.

As a black woman, trying to compete in this Eurocentric beauty standard race, we’ll always lose. It’s asinine to do so. The Beaty standards are opposite to us. And the closer you are to white (looser textured hair, “smaller nose” even tho white ppl have big ass noses naturally, lighter skin, skinnier bodies) the more you’re accepted and the higher you are on the societal Beaty standard totem pole. My personal Beauty standards are very different from society’s. Even for men. I think I’m very very attractive with my big nose kinky hair full round face and body and brown skin. You have to construct your own beauty standard for yourself. Don’t compete with standards opposite of you. It’s setting yourself up for failure.

Folks also need to keep in mind that the predominantly Northern/Western European elite of the 17th-19th centuries largely defined themselves and their beauty standards _in opposition to_ people of other races. They specifically homed in on the features that are most _unique_ to Europe, not those that are most common in Europe. They wanted their definition of beauty to have as little overlap as possible with those they needed to justify subjugating and exploiting... so it's not an accident that features common among West and Central African peoples couldn't be further from Eurocentric beauty standards. That was intentional.

A lot of things in this video are things I’ve related to, especially as a black woman. I want to give you some advice from my own experience. In the beginning of the video, the first thing i noticed is that you self depricate a lot. Saying you needed to “undisgust” yourself and pointing out everything that you hadn’t done yet. Then when you got ready you said you looked a little better but that your hair was lopsided. I didn’t notice any of that until you pointed it out. My point is that you don’t need to mention every flaw or justify the way you look because it won’t help you and that’s what people are gonna pay attention to. Personally, affirmations of self-love did not really work for me. If anything, it only made me aware of the fact i hated myself. So instead of changing by mind by the things I’d say to myself, I started to change my actions. For example: every day I’d wake up late for work, barely have time to get ready, look and feel a mess, be hungry tired and cranky, and arrive late. I’d instantly feel incompetent when i arrived to work compared to my other colleagues. But when I’d pick my outfit the night beforehand, sleep enough at night and wake up with enough time to get ready, I’d instantly love myself so much more because I actually TOOK CARE of myself instead of just saying i love myself. As a child/teen i wanted to be white for years until i asked myself: who says I’d be pretty if i were white? It sounds quite silly but after that my mindset changed a lot. It’s still something I’m working on though, but your advice on watching more youtubers who look like me has been helpful. And about confidence: faking it till you make it doesn’t work in the long run. Because how can you fake something if you don’t even know what it looks like? I thought being confident meant you could talk to a lot of people. But some people who have the biggest mouth are still insecure as fuck. Confidence meant i had to establish boundaries and communicate those with other people, so i could respect myself and they could respect me in return. I really hope this helps you and that it wasn’t offensive. Goodluck on your journey ❤️

My personal opinion on this topic is that you should, especially as a woman in this world, 100% disengage yourself from the idea of „objective beauty“. Even if it does exist, just choose to disengage. It‘s extremely rooted in whiteness as the standard and also extremely rooted in misoginy in how it perpetuates things like „female youth is beauty“ which isnt only extremely ageist but also a gross standard to live by and strive towards, since it is almost 100% upheld by what men have told society they „like“ in women. I like to feel beautiful by really looking into myself and wanting to know what my mind wants to express on this particular day. If that means no makeup frumpy outfit and going into nature to be listening to birdsounds and looking at flowers, thats what is beautiful to me that day. If thats the once in a blue moon outing with my female friends to go to a club and wearing a funky colorful makeup look i saw on youtube and an eccentric outfit, THAT is beautiful to me on that day. Let yourself be playful and dont let yourself be injected with the poison that is sold to us women by society.

I find kinky 4c hair gorgeous and there are some that find it ugly. Some find dark skin ugly and some find pale skin pretty. Who is in the right objectively? A lot of modern day beauty standards are based on SUBJECTIVE eurocentric ideals. No one is objectively inherently ugly based on these societally created artificial ideals. People are treated differently based off these ideals, definitely but they are not inherently ugly. Also there are different cultures worldwide in which something considered beautiful in one culture would be considered ghastly in another. Pretty privilege is a thing but that is for people who fit those societal standards of what is deemed to be beautiful. It doesn't mean everybody else is inherently "ugly" since birth and it doesn't make those with those "preferred" features objectively beautiful.

Girl, if you're ugly then I hate to think what I actually am. LOL! You're very beautiful and natural at that. It's hard to look nice without makeup (a lot of people look sick without it, lol). I've tried what you mentioned but my own affirmations get replaced with people's opinions, constantly. You start thinking if enough people say it, then it most be true. /:

I'm a dark skinned woman and was bullied and teased all my life .Still do. But my advice is, continue to love yourself. Point blank . If they dont like it, too bad. Your a black queen. Adjust your crown and hold your head up. 👑

All of this just proves to me that my mother knew exactly what she was talking about when she told me not to compare myself to other people and to be grateful for the things that G-d gave me. She 100% knew what she was talking about. She said her grandmother gave her that advice and the older she got the more she knew she was right! ✌️

Being black has nothing to do with u not being cute sis. It’s ur feature proportions I’ll be honest. It’s like y’all r just ignoring the existence of gorgeous conventionally attractive black women; Megan good, nia long, Rihanna. Like bffr 😂

I'm mixed and have indigenous features and have been bullied my whole life by white kids and it skewed my self image and self worth to compare myself to their beauty ideals and I just want to be confident being me! I've changed the media I consume and avoid white content bc of how much it did damage my mental health and self image growing up. This is such a topic that people struggle to articulate bc we're so programmed to have these weird beauty ideals especially for the rising "vague ethnicity ig model" standard that has black and brown women in even more dangerous beauty standards and we end up never getting the flowers for being the inspiration !

I always wondered why social media only represents a particular type of black women. Like the ones who exhibit Eurocentric features or features that isn’t too big or wide. Whereas I hardly ever see Afrocentric features and when I do it’s always people making fun of Afrocentric features. Which has been a mockery since slavery. i myself have a big, wide nose and big lips. Idk I always hated how my nose looked but overtime as I got older I love my nose. When I noticed that I had a few people crushing on me when I was in high school. (Never told me but it’s was very apparent to me). I was just pretty shocked because I didn’t really find myself attractive. That goes to show though beauty is in the eye of the beholder. We’ve been program as well to believe the Eurocentric dominant beauty standards, because slavery. But I digress, many people find different things beautiful. I personality think beauty means eating healthy, healthy body, good personality and how you interact with others that truly makes a beautiful person.

@Love it is Eurocentric. That’s a Eurocentric feature & if you don’t agree with me that’s your prorogative. Lots of Caucasians have that feature especially in western beauty society so you can’t tell me otherwise. Also you’re not gonna change my mind, I said what I said & if you don’t like it don’t engage with my comment/post. Also I never once said anything about features being small in my original comment so idk where you even got that from but anyways I said what I said.
