The problem with your analysis of what denotes a “high rake” by comparing the rake to number of blinds is this doesn’t account for how big the game plays and stack sizes. A 1/3 game with a $1k cap plays like a 5/10 game. So $8 rake isn’t crazy impactful. Nothing like it would be in a 1/3 game with a $300 cap. You should do a formula that includes effective stack size as well as average open size to define what a high rake game is. A 1/3 game where the average open is to $10, cap is $300, and the rake is $8 is relatively high rake. A 1/3 game where the average open is $25, cap is $1k, and the rake is $8 is not nearly as highly rake. I get it. You talk about online a lot. Still. You could do a much better job of defining rake and its impact so that it makes sense across all situation whether live or online.

If the average open is over 8BB, there needs to be a 2/5 opened/initiated.

Hey lads - I play in a game with 10% rake (capped at 5bb's), chop pots are raked and pots taken down preflop are raked - anything favourable I can do apart from not play (boring) or tightening up? I've thrown in lots of extra preflop 3-bets with a condensed range, but that could be idiotic with preflop rake being a thing, at least it makes the pots bigger so we hit the rake cap more often. Idk lads - help?

Question: does a straddle make you actually play tighter or it depends ? Assuming 1/3 10 porcent rake up to 10$.
@garyblackwoodpoker

Yeah you for sure play tighter, the game has just halved, so you have to tighten up a little as a result.

Rake structure where I play is 5% 5bb cap at 2/5 and 2,5% 5bb cap at 5/10. How do you describe it? When you reach the cap it should be an high take structure from your description, but a 95 pot at 5/10 is 2 Eur rake, so it's low. Not clear...
@mbradycf

The bb amount is referring to the cap, so your game does have relatively high rake (even though in some pots it's lower)

Do the preflop charts assume a percent rake or a flat drop (which they actually do in parts of CA; totally ridiculous; at 1/2 if the SB limps and the BB checks the pot is $0) Obviously if they are dropping a flat 2BB on any flop you need to play very tight as BB vs a 2.5x open and you should probably (?) never flat.

1:24 those rakes (e.g. 4BB or more) …are those per 100BB in the pot, or stated short another way, are they percent rake?

Percent rake, those amounts are the cap

Saying that there is no rake in tournaments is misguided. The rake comes off the top of the entry fee, as most tournaments are somewhere between 10%-20% return (edit: 80%-90% return).
@mbradycf

Semantics. Tourneys don't take rake out of the pot, so it doesn't impact strategy.
@SuperEuclidean

@@mbradycf true, but it would impact if you entered or not. Given the choice of entering two tourneys, one with an 85% return, and one with a 90% return, most savvy players are going to enter the second one. That means that I will be entering the first one, because I suck and would want to play against the weaker field :)

@@giuseppe9771 It's deemed unethical to only chop from the small blind and only play from the big blind, you should always chop or never chop. Players like to do it just to speed up the game a little and avoid the rake in BvB scenarios.

That's average in the US but its a 5$ cap... plus 1-3$ for promotions on pots over 50$ acrossed all games except when you play a "time game" and that's 7-10$ per half hour.
