I received my MA diploma 10 years ago and have been working as one ever since. I feel so lost now that I’m interesting in going back to school...interested in getting my RN (eventually BSN) ...So the most cost efficient way would be to go through a CC for my prerequisites (2 years) then apply to the RN program (for another 2 yrs) just to get an ADN???

Hi Caroline. I have been watching many videos similar to yours and your videos are by far the most articulate the most well spoken. I should know because I come from a family of doctors. My dad is a pediatrician and my mom used to be a registered nurse for one of the county hospital in Minneapolis. She was the one who developed the cardiac unit for that particular Hospital. My godfather is a retired chief neuroradiologist at Mayo. I don't know if you agree but I think it's a shame that nurses who got their associates degrees are less likely to be higher than registered nurses. I went to a technical college that had a program for nursing and they did a heck of a lot more hands on training then a four year university would ever do and I think that's important when it comes to things like that.

+Andy Rusin Hi Andy! It is so nice to hear from you! Thank you so much for your compliments! It means a lot :) I completely agree with you that ADN nurses are usually more prepared to handle the "hands on" portion of the nursing job, directly after graduation. The transition to hospitals favoring BSN graduates is not the hospitals preference. They are being mandated by the joint commission initiative that by 2020 80-90% of all nursing staff has to be BSN prepared. I do understand this initiative because the role of the nurse is changing so much. While I was attending a BSN program, my mom was teaching at a ADN program, like you said, they had way more hands on & their transition to RN (real nurse lol) was much easier than my transition. However, since much of my program was concentrated on critical thinking and theory, I do find that in comparison to ADN nurses, BSN prepared nurses are taught much better to think things through.... We are also placed in a much more inspiring position - meaning that gaining an advanced degree is only a few semesters away, as opposed to 4 years away. The reason the ADN & LPN programs came about, was that about 30 years ago we were facing a massive nursing shortage. They were desperate to prepare nurses and even brought many foreign nurses to the U.S. to help this crisis. BSN, however, used to be the requirement and they are now trying to go back to that... I hope this helps!! Great to hear from you again! Sincerely, - Caroline

You just pick interventions that go a long with your patient. So lets say you have a pneumonia or CHF or any type of disorder or disease. Upon your health assessment you will find something abnormal right with lung sounds, heart sounds, vital signs, fluid in extremities etc. When do you update care plans and medical records. I don't like to make requests or anything do you think you can make a video on care plans and how to make them I school and how they differ from on the job. If you wish

Hi, can you explain to me how the generic RN path works again? I'm still not clear on it. I'm on my last year in high school and want to know what education it is I need for RN. Is the bachelors and BSN the same thing? Right out of highschool I take 4 year BSN, and 3 more years for RN?

Hello :) From High school you could start at a University & complete 4 years of education; then graduate with your BSN (Bachelors in Science of Nursing), 3 more years is not necessary, but if you want to get your masters degree & specialize, you can do so :) If you want more clarification, I really think that my book will help you... the name is: How to Succeed in Nursing School & I go into a lot of detail about these options there. You can find the book on Amazon! I hope this helps! xoxo - Caroline

I start LVN/LPN in October but here in California LVN's are in demand so it's a start for me. and we get an associate's degree upon completion this school. the school I enrolled in offers a 17 month ASN/LVN course also they offer a 3 year BSN course and then an MSN course they also have PTA and PTO courses I just want to get my self into the career path as soon as I can.as it stands now I am a working adult and can't afford to do the 3 year BSN course at my chosen school. so the 17 month course works for me. I plan on applying for a job in the E.R. or Emergency department. get some experience and then get the ADN afterwards.

You need a doctors order though for a administering any breathing treatment as oxygen or giving new meds to that person you cant do anything like that with out an order right. as nurse you cannot diagnose anything only a nurse practioner a physician assistant and doctor can do diagnose tests and treatment to find out if you have CHF or pneumonia. One more thing I hear making care plans in hospital and LTC homes are a lot easier than doing them in school. I hear they are premade mostly.

Then you have an expected outcome patients secretions are immobilized and airway is free of secretions as evidence by clear lung sounds. How does that sound caroline. couple things though Do you need to choose all the interventions or just a few and what is the difference between ongoing assessment and therapeutic interventions that all say actions/interventions. How often do you educate your patients.
@Mcclot1993

I recently purchased a care plan book. Let me take an example. Someone has pneumonia medical diagnosis of course. Nursing DX could possibly be Ineffective Airway Clearance related to abnormal breath sound. Then you have a ongoing assessment like assess airway and there is always a rationale to back it up. Then you got the actions and interventions like assess changes in vital sings and temperature assess changes in mental status and it has rationales to back it up.

I have some questions caroline. 1. What does it mean by assessing the patient? 2. What does it mean to collect and analyze data from technology from the patient and the patients family? 3. What does it mean to plan and coordinate the patients care? Is it really hard to do I thought doctors decided what the patient needed and a plan of care. 4. What does it mean to make decisions, evaluate results, and revise care plans to meet the need of the patients and include outcomes

So they are medically diagnosed with CHF etc upon admission. During your assessment if you see that the patient has incontinence a good nursing dx would be urinary incontinence or if they cannot walk by themselves a good dx would be impaired mobility. Do you still use the medical diagnosis to help pick the nursing diagnosis. Do you ask questions to the patient or family member about the patient prior the head to toe assessment like you said before are they able to eliminate eat walk etc.

Hello my name is Kyana, a recent college grad looking to switch lanes to nursing. I am so grateful I found your youtube channel. A month before graduation, I was praying about what I wanted to do after graduation and I got the message I was meant to be a nurse. I graduated college in May with a degree in political science, I thought I wanted to work in health care law, but I realized I was meant to be on the floor, face to face helping people. Like yourself I have a bachelors degree in something else looking to make the change. I first registered to take my last 3 prereqs and CNA class but what's after that I have no clue. I found a program at my local university for students like me looking to get into nursing on the masters level with a bachelors in something else. I was told by the ADN coordinator at my local community college, I would not find a job because of my lack experience that the ADN route would be best. Then I heard that I would not find a job at the ADN level either because of the hospital systems changing requirements. My long term goal is to become a nurse practicer, which my local university offers to RNs with a non-nursing bachelors as well. I apologize for the long email, but I am sure you can relate when I say, I do not want to put myself further in debt to pursue my dream. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Confused Nursing Student Hopeful, Kyana

Kyana Atkins Hi Kyana! It is really nice to hear from you! So sorry for the late reply... got super behind with emails + comments. ADN route is kind of being phased out... in the sense that in 2020 each facility is required to have a certain amount of BSN (Bachelors graduate) as staff... However!!!! Since you already have a Bachelors degree, you are eligible to attend what is called an accelerated BSN program! The science pre-reqs will still be required, however, instead of getting your associates degree in 2 years by attending the ADN program... in about the same amount of time... you will get a bachelors degree by attending a BSN program :) Once you have your BSN... then you are set to go straight for your Nurse Practitioner dream!! Which is a masters level program. I really hope this clears it up a bit!! Let me know if you have any more questions... but please post a new comment (instead of replying to this one) because it is difficult for me to see replies!! Talk soon! xoxo - Caroline

Being in the military and deploying and moving around a lot is def an issue. Do nursing programs offer individual classes, or is it aaa 2-4 year dedicated program that cannot be interrupted? dont know maybe its where you live but this video paints are harsher reality than it really is. There are TONS of LPN jobs, pretty much thats all nursing homes hire, if you want a hospital job its not as easy to find one with an associates in nursing or as an LPN. LPN's in nursing homes make between $19-$35 per hour depending where you live, RNs with associates start at $45-$55 an hour and the jobs are endless (even for lpns they're aways looking to hire). BSN programs are pretty decent to get into, if you want a position as a possible Director of Nursing, ADON, etc--or if you want to become a NP, get your BSN so you can move onto your masters to go from making about $80-$90k/year to $150+ but any job in nursing is easy to get, you will always find a job.

Hi Caroline, I was in an RN program and had to drop out due to personal and family issues that didn't leave me enough time for school. I am not allowed to re admit to that campus, so the Dean suggested I go back there for the LPN certificate, and then, as an LPN, go back for my bachelor's degree at a local 4 year college. My question is if I could get a job right out of LPN school. They tell me yes, in long term care, but looking around locally, I do not see many advertisements for hiring LPNs. I would be willing to travel about 25 miles. Just wondering what you think?

Kristin Cambria not to but in but felt this could help. LPNs are having an easier time now than were even a year ago. My wife is a family practice doc and the hospital got rid of all of the RNs in her clinic and replaced them with LPNs. There are 3-4 LPNs to every RN on the floors in the hospital as well. LPNs are cheaper and most hospitals are looking to save money in any possible area. There is, and always will be, a huge demand for RNs, and of course you'd get paid more as an RN but the job prospects for an LPN aren't bad.

Hi Tony! When you get your BSN you also get your RN... RN alone is it's own thing... but getting your Bachelors is kind of like an addition to the RN license... Essentially though, yes, you do not need to get an associate degree (2 yr) degree RN license. You can go straight & get your bachelors in nursing or BSN. I hope this helps!! Let me know if you need anything else!! - Caroline

What do you mean by having the option to generate a PT or OT. Another thing I am also been buying books that would you study in nursing school such as fundamentals of nursing medical surgical nursing psychiatric nursing anatomy and physiology. Would this be a good idea to look at these books just to help me out and learn as much as a possible.

+Ebony Bell Hi Ebony, there are routs called "accelerated BSN" programs. These are for students who have a Bachelors degree in another field. They make it possible for you to achieve a BSN quicker. I would do a search for accelerated BSN around you & see what you find. I hope this helps!!

+Ebony Bell Hi Ebony, anytime. Happy to help. There are considerations for going the ADN route and some people do indeed decide to do it. For 1. I have heard that the accelerated programs can be very costly. Also, with the ADN you will be able to work much quicker. You will probably be required by your job to enroll to an ADN->BSN program. Which honestly is not a big deal. You can do it online and it will take you maybe a year depending on how many classes you take. Also, once you pass the NCLEX-RN, you will not be required to take another licensing exam (which is huge as these exams are very difficult). I know a lot of students with Bachelors degrees, who elected to go the ADN route for many reasons. See what is available around you & compare & contrast. The best thing I did was go to a college fair; this helped me compare & contrast several nursing schools requirements. I pretty much choose the program that I could get into the quickest with the prereqs I already had. I hope this helps!

Depends on the State you work in - if you work 3 days per week usually between 55k-75k (depending on the state) - this is a rough estimate though. I usually work 4 days per week - I normally bring home about 85-95K (I live in FL). That extra day is time & 1/2. I hope this helps! xoxo ~Caroline

Have a look at the different universities in Canada and their requirements under the nursing program. The sites will let you know what classes you need for admission. You will most likely need the university level courses in high school. However, there are colleges that are associated with a university and their requirements may be a slightly lower average. Again, have a look at the college sites and their requirements. In Canada, you can now only be an RPN or an RN with a BScN.

If your going to get your RN go big or go home, and just go for the BSN. I honestly I would recommend to anyone to get their LPN first though. I did this route because a) I needed quick money. I graduated high school and went straight to lpn program. I was making 18/hr, while in college after 1 year lpn program, while working on my BSN pre reqs, while all my other friends were making minimum wage to get through school. Second perk was when I finished my BSN it was a breeze to get hired, because I was considered experienced. A lot of my other classmates were scared and having trouble finding someone to hire them with no experience. My lpn experience did count for something. I was doing practically the same thing as the RN's as an lpn, so a lot of things were not new when I started my first job as an reg. nurse, which was a relief for me. I think its just an easier transition into being a registered nurse if you are an LPN first. Its easier on the staff that has to train you and easier on you as a nurse ;) Other RN's also dont tend to walk all over you, because you are more confident and have some skill. Just my experience incase anyone was curious about being an LPN. Home Health in my area pays LPN's over 20 an hour once you have a year experience behind you (which you can easily get your experience in a nursing home.) So dont think its a waste to go for LPN. It def. is not. I have met many people who have done this route and have not heard anyone say they regret it :) Do not think you just have to go straight for ADN or BSN. In Texas LPN (we call them LVN) jobs are EVERYWHERE and not being phased out. Some states I guess might be a little harder but I am pretty sure every state has nursing homes and you can always find a job there if nowhere else. If you go this route just dont get complacent after LPN and make sure you do bridge for your RN or BSN degree :) Good Luck!

acaya failia Heya. It really depends on the school/community college's nursing program. You will have to take pre-nursing which are requirements you need before entering their nursing program. Every school varies, but in general the classes are biology, chemistry, anatomy & physiology 1 and 2 with labs, english composition, a basic math, and microbiology.

+Anna Wixom - excellent excellent advise. My daughter is doing the same route. It is very difficult to get accepted in an RN program but if you are already an LVN your chances are way higher. Same if you are a newly h.s. grad...going in an RN program in a private school could be too overwhelming and if you don't make it you are stuck with a big school loan. Take the LVN program, this way you gradually learn and easier on your schedule. In my opinion it is more efficient, it is a step by step process that will able you to succeed on your goal to be an RN BSN. (LVN bridge to RN to BSN). After BSN and working a few months you could even go further and keep the momentum going and be a nurse practitoner or nurse anesthetist. $$$, lolz.
