Definitely not bored---it feels like getting an apprenticeship to see if you even like this kind of stuff. Not a lot of opportunity to see how "career paths" translate into the real world, see how it falls into place, and also see how business is balanced with the design.

BTW I'm from Argentina, and we got courses that last a few months but the Interior Designer career as I took lasted 4 years... so when people ask me "do you need to go to Interior Design school to be an Interior Designer" I'm like YES! if you really care about it and it is your passion, 2-4 years of school won't kill you... there are so many fun and interesting things to learn there :)

omg - your portfolio at 12.05 mins is stunning... congratulations... and I was loving my studies for dip interior design, when the college when into receivership - switched to building and construction with government college (affordable - none of them offer interior design where I can attend) so I now how things work from the ground up - and then thought that I don't want to deal with problematic real estate agents, so I thought I'd grab my licence so I know the workings of that industry... I've decided that my passion for interior design is a 'natural' and I'll pursue that with or without my formal qualification... you are inspiring Karin...

I love the style of your videos and I think this video is really amazing and informative. I'm an interior design student in the US and my design program is CIDA (counsel for interior design) accredited. I think it's important to look for an accredited college, research ASID and other accredited organizations and get involved because this field is all about networking! I like that you mentioned going to a school that is savvy in technical drawings because that is so important, Otherwise you will not be able to design! Another important tip is if your school doesn't teach you about building codes, definitely start to learn them. It will help you out immensely in the long run! This field is so dynamic and I love it, but you need to be positive you want to get into it because it is a lot of work. :) I hope this comment helped!

same for Canada too! I wish she would have mentioned that part because regulations are changing and theres a huge push for designers to be able to sign off on their own drawings. I am in a CIDA accredited program as well and it's not easy at, AT ALL.

MrMclovinJunior very true! It’s so challenging and time consuming and there’s more to it than people realize. I mean I learn about construction methods and materials, lighting, codes, and of course, sustainable design along with a bunch of other topics most people don’t think of when they think of interior design. In the states you have to pass the NCIDQ (industry standard exam) to become a professionally recognized designer. You don’t HAVE To, but to be of a certain level to work on higher projects and up your pay(which who wouldn’t want to??) is the way to go. Very important stuff I felt like sharing, cuz even I didn’t know of this when I began school!

I’m a third year interior architecture and design student and I’m doing my first internship right now actually. I’m so so glad to see your channel because there are not a lot of designers who take the time to educate others on their profession this way! When I first made the switch to design school from biomedical sciences I was so let down by the lack of designers online sharing their knowledge. It can be a very secretive field. I wanted to compliment you, and say that I really admire you and hope to be as successful and gracious as you one day. I love the ‘day in the life’ videos bc it gives a real perspective for those interested, like myself. My internship right now is strictly residential and is limited to a lot of decorating, which is something I am not particularly drawn to. So, seeing your channel has definitely reenergized me because what you do is so similar to what we do in school, and I’m thrilled to see it in action in the professional world. Ps. You remind me of Sandra Bullock. You are both rock stars

Not sure if this applies to Canada, but for viewers in the US, check out your local community college! Several in California offer ID certificates that will prepare you for the certification exam. I originally saw a counselor who showed me the starting path then I ran into the ID lead a few weeks later and she helped tailor the courses I need to take to make my first steps! I'll be starting ID classes in the fall or spring of next year and I am very excited! I'm also working on my Business Administration degree with finance emphasis for the business side of what I want to do. I don't think you necessarily have to go to design school as long as you get the besic certification, I think the majority of your skills and knowledge will come from hands on experience at whatever firm you decide to work with. I hope someone finds this helpful. Good luck!

Hey Hunn, You might want to go to CCIDC.org because you can take the exam but that doesn't mean you'll meet the qualifications to get certification to legally be called an interior designer. You have to meet a minimum amount of years in school/in the field experience.. I also want to be an interior designer and Im going to school in California. I would double check on what you've been told just to make sure your good to go love :) (Meet the minimum Qualifications to sit for the IDEX California® Exam, do not qualify to complete certification after passing the IDEX. CCIDC will keep application and test results on file until Candidate provides proof of completion of remaining qualifications to certify. Candidates must meet one of the following minimum qualifications: Minimum of 40 Semester Core Units from accredited design program (60 Quarter Units) - OR - More than 5 but less than 8 years of diversified design experience.) I pulled this from the site for you as just an FYI (this is only a small part)

Although my BA is in psychology I took advantage of the opportunity I was given and made sure to educate myself formally on technical skills while also learn from our in-house architect. However I’m sure there are other people who wanted a designated video based on how to become an interior Designer. I, myself am going into the program next spring. So I had more specific questioned that I had asked on instagram: 1. What are the differences between intermediate, junior and senior interior designer? How many years or education will it take to each level? 2. How do you obtain LEED and NCIDQ? 3. Also how do you handle difficult situations at work (if a client isn’t happy) with grace and style? I know your super busy! But I would love it if you could answer these questions when you can. I look forward to watching more of The day in the Life and Bohnafide 🙂

Hi Karin, I've just seen few of your videos and immediately fall in love with them. I'm about to switch my career from the finance into Interior design. I also have a strong background in Feng Shui, which has actually inspired me to take a deep breath and start a new career path following my heart's voice. Could you please tell me which technical skills are MUST have for a successful interior designer? Thank you

hi hun, let me say that i just love your socks, lol. anyways, I am a mom of 5 kids 4 under 8. just went back to school since 1999, taking a linguistic program with a mayor and spanish, but i really don't like it. i have been watching a lot of diy while popping babies from the past 9 years., and i think i would go to a design program. i really love all this design and creating new beautiful spaces. i found your channel and i think you and your team are awesome. my husband and i bought an old bungalow and little money to renovate it. I would appreciate if you have any tips for me.

Thank you so much Karin! This video was extremely helpful. I'm about to start an interior design/decorating program in January here in Charleston SC. I'm a wife and mom and they offer classes in the evening. It's only for certifications, but after watching your video it has really encouraged me that it really isn’t as important as long as you learn drafting and all the crucial fundamentals of design. Your personal story was huge. I had a teacher in culinary who for some reason “had it out for me”. For some reason she just did not like me and even said mean things to me. It was horrible, so I felt your pain!! However, it was like a comfort to hear I wasn’t the only one who experienced something like that!! Can’t wait to continue to watch your videos. They are so inspiring!!

But none of you are Registered Interior Designers with the IDIBC? To be a Professional Interior Designer in Canada you must past the NCIDQ qualification examination. Interior designers have been trying to get the same rights and be recognized as a practicing body, similar to Architects and the AIBC.

Hi Karin! I am Irina from Romania. I like your energy and happy mood! While looking to your videos I often wonder what books do you have in the bookshelves and what would you recommend (I am a young interior designer and architect). Also, it would be interesting to see a video about how you overcome different problems and down moments. Kind wishes to you!

Hi Karin! I really like your videos. You are very inspiring and really good at what you do. Thank you so much for making this video. I recently realised I wish to become an interior designer as well but I am a post graduate in finance now and have been working at a finance job now from past 1.5yrs in India. I dont know if its a good idea going back to school for learning Interior Design because a) I am 25 now and pursuing a degree in design here will take 4 yrs since the short term courses are not available from reputed institutes here and b) I am not ready for this financially. Is is viable that if I somehow teach myself some basics over an year or so gradually and get a job in a design firm? Also, do you think this huge career change is possible and what kind of obstacles I may face, given my present condition ? Thanks a lott !!! :)

You are such an inspiration for me! I'm from Greece and I studied civil engineering, but finally I don't like it at all! I find interior design more interesting and creative,but in Greece we don't have a university especially for Interior design, only seminars and private schools so I'm not sure about the certificate that they give and if it's worth the money of course. Also I heard a lot of people saying that you needn't go back to school for interior design, only learning the design programs like Autocad, 3dsmax etc, so finally I am confused about what to do. I would appreciate your answer! Keep going your great job!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️

I particularly really liked this video b/c you answered a question I didn't even know I had. Tbh i had gotten slightly bored of the day to day videos. But I personally love a storyline, or content with a problem/solution/outcome. I think that's why your bonafide episodes resonate with me so much. But I love all your videos, big thanks to you and your team. Whenever I feel like juggling design school and work is getting too tough, I always revisit your channel and get my inspiration back! I love designing btw.

Hello, my name is Anna Cristina Siqueira. I am an architect and I live in Brazil. I discovered your channel on KZitem a short time ago and would like to congratulate you for your work. Your videos have great content and are very well produced. I opened my own firm two years ago. My business is still a baby, but it's growing every day! I'd like to see you talking about two subjects. First as you did to attract the first customers, when you did not have a large portfolio with several projects. How did you present yourself at the meetings, or rather, how could you show the client all the potential you had? Second, how do you organize the tasks and steps of each project? Do you do that with some computer softer, you note in a notebook? And how you monitor those steps with your team. Thank you!

Two years later, in seeing this video it makes me think of how much harder it is, even now nearly at the end of 2020, especially here in Alberta. I'm starting out a bit late in life at the age of 30 and just coming to the realisation that I'd love to finish my arts degree and would love to apply that to Interior Design. However my only option in Alberta is a four year BA degree at MRU in Calgary. It's gonna be a rough road, but I'm hopeful about making it work.

Hi, Karin & team! ^w^ you asked for suggestions what would we like. I would really like, if you picked some interesting projects that you are just starting with and did with them the same thing you did with renovation of your own house. It would have its own nickname (like Bohnafide) and we could see important milestones. At the end there would be nice mini-series about one project form beginning to realization. This remind me of the time you were in China. We saw you working inside tall building, measuring everything, but that was all. As much as I know, we did not see how it turned out. And I would love to see :)

Absolutely love this video. It's so interesting to see the different paths that designers can take in Canada, I personally am starting a 3 year bachelor's program and am on the hunt to find what career paths are available out there to Canadian designers. I also don't want to solely be a "decorator," so an education is necessary for what I want to do. But its interesting that you only did a certificate program & are running your own business now - I wonder if you regret not doing a full diploma or bachelor's program and really getting the ins and outs of the field before diving in? Either way, its awesome to see this type of content and it is so helpful for anyone trying to understand the landscape of the field over the past few years in Canada specifically. Thank you!

I loved these videos so far... Honestly, I do live in the wrong country/village. There is such a lack of style or even comfort. For me, it's not about luxury, but to feel comfortable at a home that is also functional and pretty ... I've looked online for a course to take and there are none except to landscaping design. Really?... Here it's really hard... I wanted to do something I love... hugs

I'm in love with your overall style, in design itself and the way you carry yourself! I have been through some bad experiences with university. Went to Computer Science school and hated every minute of it and I have huge issues with stress levels. I had a hard time figuring out my passion and I just always find myself designing houses and rooms in Sims (silly, i know) and I want to go down that path but I'm too scared of having to deal with maths and many years of testing. My question is: how tough is the material that is required to be studied in order to get into interior design?
@madalinadan6407

I was always taking a lot of time for designing houses in sims too! And personally, I think your question is depending a lot of the country where you are applying to. I believe some schools doesn't have a selection process to enroll. Maybe try to search for short-time private schools

I'm currently doing a bachelor in interior design, we don't have exams :) No math classes, although you might need certain math classes from high school to get in the course. From my experience so far, you don't need to be smart or to deal with any complex formulas, all you need is LOTS of time since the projects are quite time consuming, you also need to be able to handle lots of pressure since a lot of the work is manual in the first year. I say do it, if you r creative and enjoy producing nice results and are interesting in developing your artistic and design skills, you will have a blast!

Hi! I am in the process of applying to design school for interior design. The task of building an interior design portfolio seems a little daunting. Do you have any advice on the process of hand sketches, creating original design work and building 3D models...
@EPpMac

In the United States if you want to become an interior designer, I think you must attend a university and major in interior design a four year program otherwise you are an interior decorator or a non certified interior designer. You then have to pass the The National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) exam. School is the answer as you said especially when it comes to construction and reading Blueprints, color theory, history of design etc and then of course running a business is a whole other ball game so to speak. My congratulations to you for running such a successful business- I am so sorry you had an educator that turned you off from school, but it looks like you had the grit, determination and talent to own and run a successful interior design business and the smarts to surround yourself by talented interior designers! I do so love your designs!!
