If so that means Death got rid of his rather unique speech impediment of talking in ALL CAPS. I wounder if he still sounds like Christopher Lee and if so does he still when he is in a woman's form.

It fits Discworld Mythology. The Being Greg is talking to might be AZRAEL, the central Death whose incarnations fulfill their duty on every world. ( visited by Death in REAPER MAN ) Sandman not so much, since it is explained that the D's look different for every Universe and every Incarnation but they are never alone like this one.

they put the path to their imortality so far out of reach that in order to find it, a person would be functionally dead, -to their community, their government, their family and friends- for how long they would be gone to even find it.

Honestly, I'd still say yes. Infinite time may mean infinite pain, but it also means infinite healing, infinite development, and I've always been the sort of person who just wants to know what will happen in the far future

I'll confess it has an appeal to it. Getting to see how it all turns out is a very powerful thing. But I still think eventually I'd get bored or tired and want to finally rest. Especially since this story makes it clear that its universe spawns a new one. It might be OK if you knew you'd get a willing replacement, when that time came. Otherwise I worry I'd be a coward and get a replacement unfairly, like was done to this death.
@IRMentat

Every cycle eventually becomes a repeating pattern. How many cycles you get through before the details are lost into the general similarities varies person to person. Expand a humans perspective to even mile is an I’d guess many would “filter” out as their ability to connect diminishes. A few would prob alt be in for the long haul (the media backlog alone would become an unstoppable pressure on the limits of potential) but those types would be few and far between.

After watching a few universes go through their entire lifecycle as well as the countless aeons after I suspect your curiosity may wind down a bit. Although being a silly and curious mortal myself I might have even accepted the job only to regret it in just that very way. Then foreseeing that possibility would accept it anyway. What fools we mortals be.

@@IRMentat "Can never die so can never live" is stupid. Death is enjoying its may tai, right? That's living! sure, it is not the feeling of "true fulfillment of feeling super alive" one can (sometimes) get from living life to the max with family relationships children etc. But it's proof that the Death in this story can" feel" stuff. Otherwise if Death felt nothing at all then wouldn't even bother with sipping mai tais! Saying you're becoming desensitized to feeling close to people "because too many years passed", is exactly the same as saying that Death lost its sense of taste "after so as long". Death's body clearly can be young and full of vigor and health. It can enjoy life. It can feel love even if it is 100% person the other loved one will die. It's like buying a puppy... You KNOW it will die in say maximum 20 years (typically much less), does that mean you won't be able to truly love your new dog dog anymore? Even if you have a new puppy every 10 years after each previous one died and you're now 70 years old ? Even if you know it will break your again earth when it dies? That kind of story mentality is utter bullshit. It's possible to change one's own perspective. This story is of a "defeatist" attitude. Even if I enjoyed EVERYTHING the universe had to offer billions times over, that doesn't mean suddenly magically all these things mysteriously stop being enjoyable and become a painful curse instead. If I was the man wanting to be god, and the death said this thing is such a curse, I'd simply offer to take its job. I know that is some gajibillions years I might become too tired of it, then it's a simple matter to find your own replacement, after all you have about 40 new candidates every 12000 years. But nope Death clearly prefers to keep "existing" with its forever curse, so obviously it prefers that to self-termination, so Death offers the man only the "paradise" of being forced to stick to one place ALONE doing NOTHING until he gives up and rings that dang bell. Wooow woopeedooo, such "gentleness"!

I agree. The only drawback from the presented seems to be that death is alone. The question is if that can be mitigated? If there are enough being like you and me, it might be bearable or even nice like it should be.

Thanks again a happy tale an instant classic. That so many delude themselves in what immortality fantasy/philosophy would really be. I’d probably stay on that “beach” for quite awhile trying to think my way out. After a few hundred thousand years, maybe even befriending death, apprenticing for awhile, I’d be really good at making sand castles. I think then I’d make him a new chair, and start asking really complicated questions.

Ha! "Death"... Seems that nobody really knows what it is... Many write stories trying to describe it, bit no one apparently knows what it is. So: Death is your best friend. Death has been with you all of your life helping you. From your earliest realization until now, Death has been by your side, guarding you... You know Death as your dear protector that you refer to as your "Guardian Angel". You only change it's name when you see someone die to "Death", when it's only your true companion and guide. Death is not some entity, Death is only a perspective of YOUR "status" at your life in moment within a timeline. To fear Death, is akin to a kitchen timer being afraid of when it has to beep or ding after it reaches 0, is Exactly how Everybody seems to recognize it. However, the timer is soon used again for it's solitary purpose, while we really don't know what happens when our own timer sounds. Folk falsely, yet honestly claim to fear Death, when they actually fear what will, if anything, happen After Death leaves them, or if Death ever will. And as always, that's called the "Unknown Factor", not "Death". While Death is your life long buddy, while Future is always chocked full of "Treachery", and will NEVER cease attacking you, unless Death is able to take you to a place where Future has no sway, all the while remaining as your best friend, confidant, and the protecting hand in which you have never known any betrayal or harm to come from. A thought: Death "personified", just may be your very own "shade" that remained behind when you hopped on the boat to come here, posing as your own anchor line for when you return back home. . . `Always your best buddy, because Death, your Guardian Angel, may very well be your other "half-self". And remember, if there's NOTHING after This, there's still nothing anyone can can do about whatever happens. And if there's nothing, what do You care? . . `even if you were aware of anything in the first place? You have no choice in the matter. The only "choice" one has is which path to take to ultimately arrive there, as everyone else does.

That's what people probably won't be able to understand with out human brains. Immortality, literally living forever, might be fun for a while. Or heck it might be fun for tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands, even millions of years. But eventually, after tens or hundreds of millions of years the fun becomes just okay, and then normal, and then boring, and then a total slog. And after all that time, only a tiny fraction of the first second of eternity has ticked by. You'll still have the rest of all of eternity to go through. If you ended when the universe ended that would actually be a blessing, as at least there would be an end to the supposed endless. But this death stays through all universes. If anything, an existence like this would become torture. And maybe after that it would just become nothing. You might just become a kind of biological robot, going through the actions but having lost all sense of self, time, or anything around you. A death like this should be on a cycle. Which could have easily been achieved. Just have someone else take over whenever you are well and truly done with the job. Keep that going and most deaths would probably only stick around for a few thousand or maybe a few ten thousand years before passing it on to the next person.

@@molag-ballordofdomination2065 And you think Death didn't do just that a few billion times? Or at least try to? Keep in mind, Death is a fundamental aspect of creation now, meaning that some things may just be impossible for him to do to himself. Like get rid of those pesky things called memories. And even if he/she is capable of doing that, he/she is also capable of the kind of awareness to know that he/she has done it before. For the exact same reason. And it accomplished nothing in the end. The only release from that existence is to con some other poor idiot into taking your job, and thus no longer being eternal and now being able to die.
