I have been spinning wrenches for over 20 years. I have seen countless products and tools designed to allow one person to bleed brakes by themselves. This however, this has to be one of the best tricks I have seen. Definitely a good one for when you need to bleed a caliper or brake hose. Not sure how well or It would work bleeding a ABS pump but still a useful trick to know
@SlothKingGarage
Жыл бұрын
Love hearing this kind of stuff! As for the ABS modules, as you'd know, there are certain pumps that would need to be activated with a scan tool to get all the fluid out from those. One work-around is to go to an empty parking lot and slam on your brakes a few times to activate the ABS module, then bleed the brakes again to get that fluid out. Not the best procedure, but it'll get the job done.

@@jgregg7100 The technique in the video used PRESSURE from the master cylinder to PUSH fluid. Once the bubbles are in the bottle, then any back pressure (when you release the brake pedal) will gently suck only fluid back up since the tube is submerge in brake fluid. No bubbles! In contrast the VACUUM technique, relies on a tight seal all around, and when you suck too much with the vacuum pump, you will suck in air bubbles from anything not 100% tight. This is inferior technique.

Another one man bleeding tip: Believe it or not you don't have to pump the brake pedal, just put on the clear hose on the bleeder nut and put a bottle with some brake fluid and the hose submerged in it and crack the bleeder valve nut and slowly the brake fluid will empty into the bottle, and just keep the master brake reservoir full, gravity will do the rest, you can even do all the wheels at once if you have a hose and bottle or can at each one.

I realize I’m a little late on this, but I had a question. When bleeding the brake, how will I know if there is air in the tube leading from the reservoir to the brakes. Additionally, after having started the brake bleeding process, how will I know when all air has been pushed out? Sorry, this would be my first time, and with costs piling up, I wanted to learn how to the do the maintenance of my vehicle myself.
@SlothKingGarage
Жыл бұрын
One way to tell if you have air in your lines is if your brake pedal feels squishy. Like very squishy. When you're bleeding the lines, you'll see air bubbles get pushed out through the tube. Once you don't see anymore, then that means there's no more air in that line/caliper. Do it for every brake caliper and you'll be set. Just start from the rear and work your way up front, usually ending on the driver side.

@@septsixquatredeux Yeah you can definitely do that. Good call on wanting to use those rubber tip locking pliers. Doing that will also help to reduce the amount of brake fluid that will drip out, so you don't have to rush to install the new caliper. Only other tip of advice I'd give you, is to not let the caliper hang on the brake line if you have to put it down for a second. Well I said "pump the brakes until all of the air is out" lol. So when you're doing this whole process, you're supposed to do this while the vehicle is off. No need to have it on unless you're using a scan tool to activate the ABS pump to bleed the air out of it. (You can also activate it without a scan tool, but you run the risk of having the pump stay on and causing the master cylinder to run dry) Hope this clears it up!

You can do it either way. @@billkincer4256 Oh man, yeah that fluid is very old. You're supposed to change it every 2-3 years. (Your manufacturer will probably have a mileage interval. But 2-3 is what everyone goes by.) Since brake fluid is hygroscopic, it absorbs water. Which reduces its boiling point and can cause rust to build up in the lines. When you look at the clear tubing, it'll be full of brake fluid leading to the bottle after you pump it a fee times. When you don't see any little air bubbles coming from the bleeder valve, that'll be your indicator that you don't have any air in that line.

I used my cell to video every time I started the process would record 1-2 min at a time get out close the bleeder and review the video until I was satisfied there were no bubbles coming out. Did this for each wheel and ended up using the whole I believe 32 oz bottle of brake fluid pedal feels good and solid now.

Could u do this on just one calliper or u need to do all 4?
@AffirmativeAndrew
6 ай бұрын
You really should do all 4, in the order specified by the manufacturer. Usually the furthest from the master cylinder first. Do you need to? Probably not. But who wants to gamble with brakes? Better to do it right and not have any problems. Most shops would probably bleed all four even replacing one or two.. you really should bleed all 4 any time a brake line is loosened or replaced. I'm not an expert mechanic though.

If the ABS module is on the passenger side of the engine bay. You'll start with rear driver, rear passenger, front driver and end with front passenger side. General rule is, you start with the rear but just do the opposite side of where the ABS module is located. Then end on the side where the module is located.

Hi. so i noticed my brake pedal a bit stiff after i refilled my brake fluids but did not bleed the brakes. Would this be the main cause of a stiff brake pedal? thanks
@SlothKingGarage
Жыл бұрын
Hey! So it could be a number of things like, a failing brake booster, one or two calipers that are starting to seize up or a vacuum hose that's bad. Have you driven it around? If it's just stationary and you pump the brakes a few times (especially without the car running), it will feel stiff. Now, if the fluid hasn't been flushed in a while, there could be some small deposits that have built up. You can try flushing the fluid and see if it clears up the issue.

@@SlothKingGarage i just tried the brake booster. it is working normal. thr brake calipers has only been there for 90000km. shouldnt be a problem right? the last time the brake fluids were flushed was done back in 2021..hmmm
@SlothKingGarage

@@cloudchaser9951 Hmm, well, if the pads were worn down and you had to top off some brake fluid. That would also cause a stiffer feeling since there is more fluid pushing against the pads. Does the vehicle stop fine when you drive it? And also, calipers can last a while, depends if you change the brake fluid every 2-3 years. If it's not done regularly, they will wear out sooner due to corrosion.

@@SlothKingGarage the vehicle stops fine just that i feel the brake pedal isnt the same as before . i used a scanner and no codes were found. You're supposed to make sure the hose is full of fluid so that you don't put air back into the system
@doofydoof7129

Yea so i accidentally unscrewed the brake line too the caliber lmao I screwed it back on but now my brake is spongey and loose, there might be air in the system right? Also my brake fluid isn’t the best so I guess my question is, I would most likely have too get the air out of my system since my dumb ass opened the brake line?
@SlothKingGarage
Жыл бұрын
😂 Oh that's a hilarious accident. But yeah, there's air in there now, so just go ahead and bleed it. If your brake fluid doesn't look good, go ahead and bleed the entire system. Just start from the rear left, then rear right, move onto the front right and end on the front left.

If you're changing one caliper, then yeah you can bleed the side that you've replaced. But if you're doing a whole system bleed, you'll need to bleed it at every caliper, starting from the rear.

To bleed all of the old fluid out, you'll have to bleed each caliper. Starting from the rear. If your fluid has been flushed recently but you're replacing one caliper, you'll just bleed the single one.

I used to do this until I decided to just buy a power bleeder. Sometimes,I had to put Teflon tape around the threads on the bleeder screw. So fluid didn't leak past the threads, and no air could get sucked back into the system. If you're bleeding the brakes because you replaced the master cylinder or the ABS module,good luck. Just take it in because that's most likely going to require a bidirectional scan tool in order to do the job correctly and have a firm brake pedal and good brakes afterward. The reason a bidirectional scan tool is required for many ABS braking systems is that there's a brake fluid resivor inside the ABS module. You NEED to activate the ABS motor to push ALL the air and fluid out into the brake lines downstream of the ABS module. Then you'll be able to bleed them. If not, then you're probably just wasting time and brake fluid.
