I see this is a older video but just wanted to say thank you for your time and work involved in making it. I have always loved bonsais but never had one till now. I can see it becoming a hobby after watching the video. There is so much more to learn. Watching and listening to your explanations on different areas that require pacific treatment to get your absolutely gorgeous bonsais. Again, thank you. Just like where the sun hits which determines one of the the considerations for trimming. Many different things to consider. Love it🥰

I started keeping Bonsai last year when I turned 18 and I never thought it would turn into a something I absolutely love! My first tree was the Chinese Elm and this year it's certainly flourishing with fresh growth and I am very pleased! But I know that it's because of people like this man and other helpful advice shared, that beginners like myself can get off to a great start and develop a love for a new hobby!

You are amazingly kind to answer random questions! Hope I'm not pushing my luck with another. I was just letting my ficus grow out wildly since I got it with the idea that if doing so, the trunk will get thicker. The very thin branches are now ridiculously long and I'm going to do my first pruning. Was this erroneous thinking that I was promoting trunk girth? Thanks for giving me faith in the bonsai people I've met here--I guess it's not rocket science--they've got several hundred plants of various stages (mostly podocarpus) in their nursery, none of which look dead! I just bought several more small trees--hope I'm not biting off more than I can chew. I'm sure the trees are much cheaper here than one can get in the States.

Letting the branches grow is the quickest way to thicken that trunk. Hang in there, it just takes time to learn the basics and understand how that tree will react

Hi, I really enjoyed your comments and suggestions on the ficus. I have recently started back on my journey into this hobby and i am glad that there are so many people into it now here in the US. My only question really was that, was that the "front", orientation of the ficus when you were working it? I am assuming so, but I wanted to make sure.. I have since subscribe to your channel, I hope I find an update to this tree, I am excited to see what time has done to it since your 'training' of it. :)

Hello, Ive just recently found your channel and enjoying it very much. I wondering if you could make a video, or give some tips on how i can turn my lemon seedling into a bonsai. I planted the seed last year and its about a foot or so tall now, and i understand i need to wait a bit, to let the trunk thicken up, but also id like to give it a sort of curved shape and wonder when to start and how to work away from a seedling. Thanks! :)

Very nice--thanks so much for this wonderful sharing! I'm living in extremely humid South China. I've been wanting to get into bonsai for a long time and finally got in contact with some bonsai experts in a commercial nursery here, but things are done quite differently and not sure what advice to take. Chinese do tend to be a bit slap dash--so anyway, when selling me a tree and re-potting it for me, they would put large pottery shards at the bottom of the pot, instead of screen and they don't wire the tree into the pots. I wonder if I should get screen and plan to wire them in and risk re-potting them so soon again. They didn't repot in the sense that they didn't do any root work--they basically just transplanted with all the dirt attached. Could you kindly tell me what's best? Also, when I asked about plant food, she told me just to pour in some pu'er tea--the first washes of the tea which you don't drink. Thank goodness I drink a fair amount of pu'er tea! They tend to specialize in podocarpus and don't seem to have a variety of other trees, though did manage to get one small (half sunburnt) maple, an azelea and a loropetalum. The soil mix she sold me was so hard it was like pieces of rock with what looked like occasional very small pieces of brick in it! It was kind of irritating because I wanted to use that soil for my little miniature moss gardens, and it was like little rocks, whereas you need to put moss on un-littered surfaces. Anyway, insofar as the bonsai trees go, I guess they are professionals....and maybe should just do what the Romans do....? Before finding them I had bought a ficus retusa on the street a few months ago, which I haven't touched but think I'll begin to prune soon, because, though it's base is much smaller than yours, the thin branches are getting like four--five times longer than the tree and it's not only looking very strange, the branches are falling every which way and getting into stuff. I was letting it all grow and grow in the hopes that the trunk would get fatter. Oh, and btw, you might want to aim your camera a little higher next time so we can see what you do at the top. However, it really was fine.
@OrlandoBonsaiTV
10 жыл бұрын
Hi Susan, I m so happy to hear you are trying bonsai. The technique that they use for potting is very traditional The screens are a newer method but the broken pots is what was used for a very long time and works well. No reason to use the screens if you don't have to. Also the wiring in is needed if the tree doesn't have many roots or is unstable in the pot. If its a tree that's been in a pot for a while it will stay in very well especially when the roots grow. Bonsai soil does not use any potting soil or dirt of any sort. It is all course materials with sharp edges to help the roots get more air and split more often so that the trees can survive in smaller pots than those in potting soil. Moss will grow on this soil in time. Don't worry you are on the right track. Follow the locals, because they know best what grows in that area and helps them stay healthy. Good luck and thanks for the comments

I live in Kissimmee and bought a Bonsai at home depot that I identified as a ginseng ficus. It has done well and I planted cuttings that are doing well. The original has only four branches with many leaves and roots starting in the center of the primary root. It is still in store pot. Would like to know how or when to re pot and if the branches should be wired together to force larger root. It has a horseshoe shaped root with four long branches growing straight up. Don't know how to proceed with it. Any advise would be appreciated love your videos and have a great interest in Bonsais.

Hi Orlando! I live in India and I got a 2-3 month old ficus religiosa to make it into a bonsai, I know its quite a long journey but I was hoping that if the plant survives for 6 months with my care then I can surely make it into a bonsai. Its been 20 days approx. after getting the plant but its leaves are turning yellow and now black. My question is what am I doing wrong ? I water it once in 2 days depending on if the soil has become dry also I keep it in proper sunlight. I dont understand what is wrong. Can you plz help ? I also repotted the plant for proper drainage as I thought this problem happened due to overwatering. Counting on your help.

How thick do branches need to be before I can start wiring? I have a Ficus microcarpa that has the same scarring problem at the top like yours, and I want to get some new growth in that area. Would defoliating help, or is wiring the branches out of the way the only way to go?

Raziyax no wiring and no defoliating. Just give it good fertilizer and let the tree grow wild for a while. The branch will thicken and then you can come back and prune it

Deepak, The good news is the top of the tree is the easiest to develop because the tree always wants to grow tall. So you will see this year the tree will start to send up a new leader growing straight up. As it thickens clip the tip and then you will be able to start developing branches from that leader

Thank you sir for the great video, plz what kind of soil whould you use if u lived in a hot, dry climate characterized by long, dry summers and short, cold winters. The climate is influenced by Jordan's location between the subtropical aridity of the Arabian desert areas and the subtropical humidity of the eastern Mediterranean area. January is the coldest month, with temp from 5°C to 10°C, and August is the hottest month at 20°C to 35°C. daily temp can be very hot, especially in the summer; on some days it can be 40°C or more?!
@OrlandoBonsaiTV

Walid Alik I would use a good soil that has good water retention but drains well and does not keep the plant wet. I would add a top of Sphagnum moss on top of the soil to hold in moisture and to block the sun from drying out the mix as quickly. Filtered sun will help your trees no dry out too quickly. Its all about keeping shade over the tree so the water uptake into the tree is enough to help the tree respire to keep itself cool. If the heat it too great the tree won't be able to pull enough water up to the leaves and will overheat and die

Way to go on saving the tree. You never know where you're going to find bonsai material. The problem you have is most likely Ficus Thrips (Gynaikothrips uzeli) causes sunken, reddish spots on leaves. Leaves tend to curl and fold inward. You can use an insecticidal soap or neem oil (Green Light Neem, Schultz Garden Safe Brand Neem Oil). May may want to remove the leaves that are curled and treat the rest of the tree. Spring might be the better time to aggressively attack the thrips since they go after newer growth

There are a lot of reasons form a tree to defoliate. If the weather is getting cold in your area you may need to get it indoors in a location that still gets sunlight. Also repotting will sometimes tress the tree so it might need time to recover. Don't let the tree sit in a wet pot and be sure that it is draining well. Take your time with it and don't over do the watering

You called this tree a tropical. Where you live you keep it out of doors all year. In climates where it freezes it would have to come indoors- where there would be less light. So my question is as a beginner in a northern climate should I stick with pines (I imagine that leaf drop will happen when out to in happens)? I like to keep indoor plants outside on the porch in the non-frosted months. The few plants I have go in and out throughout the year.
@OrlandoBonsaiTV
10 жыл бұрын
These ficus can go down to 32 but must be protected from freezing or frost. For me I bring them in at night on those cold days. However for you consider having a space set up in the winter months where they can be indoors and get light from a grow light to keep the roots active. They won't look their absolute best in the winter but they will survive until spring when they can go back outside. At least try one in your collection to see how it does for you
