HOW TO BOOT/USE SSD/USB IN RASPBERRY PI 4
REQUIREMENTS:
1. PI + SD CARD (MIN 8GB) + CARD READER + SSD/USB + INTERNET CONNECTION + MOUSE + KEYBOARD + LCD/MONITOR
a. I AM USING PI 4 16 GB CARD AND 32 GB USB
2. DOWNLOAD YOUR DESIRED DISTRO
a. I AM USING KALI (Kali Linux RaspberryPi 2 (v1.2), 3 and 4 64-Bit)

3. DOWNLOAD SD CARD FORMATTER

4. DOWNLOAD BALENA ETCHER

STEPS
1. FIRST PUT YOUR MICRO SD CARD IN CARD READER AND FORMAT IT THROUGH SD CARD FORMATTER
2. EXTRACT YOUR DISTRO IMG FILE
3. OPEN BALENA ETCHER SELECT YOUR IMG FILE CONFIRM YOUR TARGET IS YOUR MEMORY CARD AND PRESS FLASH BUTTON AND WAIT FOR IT TO FLASH
4. NOW IN THE SAME WAY FLASH YOUR USB OR SSD WITH YOUR OS IMG
5. AFTER SUCCESSFUL FLASH NOW PUT YOUR CARD IN PI AND ON THE PI
6. ITS YOUR CHOICE USE MOUSE KEYBOARD AND DISPLAY OR JUST SSH FROM YOUR LAPTOP/PC BY FINDING YOUR PI IP ADDRESS.
7. NOW WE WANT PARTUUID OF OUR SSD/USB BUT BEFORE THAT WE RUN THE COMMAND
a. blkid or sudo blkid
8. AFTER RUNNING ABOVE COMMAND, WE WILL GET PARTUUID OF OUR SD CARD BUT WE NEED OF OUR SSD/USB SO PLUG YOUR SSD/USB TO PI 3.0 PORT AND AGAIN RUN THE COMMAND
a. blkid
9. NOW YOU WILL SEE 4 ENTRIES 2 OF SD CARD AND 2 OF SSD/USB
10. NOTE DOWN THE PARTUUID OF YOUR SSD/USB WHERE TYPE=”EXT4”
11. NOW YOU HAVE TO CHANGE PARTUUID FOR YOUR SSD/USB FOR THIS RUN THIS COMMAND
a. sudo nano /boot/cmdline.txt
b. Find root=/dev/mmcblk0p2
c. And change to root=PARTUUID=” your id”
12. IF YOU HAVE A RASPBERRY PI 4 AND ARE GETTING BAD SPEEDS TRANSFERRING DATA TO/FROM USB3.0 SSDS
13. FINDING THE VID AND PID OF YOUR USB SSD
a. lsusb or lsusb -vv for long detail but lsusb just work fine
14. FIND YOUR SSD/USB DRIVE AND NOTE DOWN ITS VID AND PID I.E ID 058F:6387
15. NOW EDIT YOUR CMDLINT.TXT
a. mv / nano /boot/cmdline.txt.bak
b. sudo nano /boot/cmdline.txt
c. ADD usb-storage.quirks=058F:6387:u
16. SAVE AND REBOOT
17. NOW YOUR PI WILL REBOOT IT WILL BOOT FROM YOUR CARD BUT IT WILL USE YOUR SSD/USB
18. YOU CAN EJECT IT AFTER THE SYSTEM WILL BE ON BUT CARD IS NEEDED TO BOOT BECAUSE MAY BE IN THE FUTURE THE NEW FIRMWARE WILL REMVOE THIS CARD DECENCY
19. BUT FOR NOW, CARD IS NEEDED TO BOOT TO THE SYSTEM.
20. NOW SHUTDOWN YOUR PI REMOVE SD CARD PUT IN CARD READER COPY FROM BOOT TO YOUR PC BUT DRIVE NAME MUST BE BOOT AND COPY YOUR FILES AGAIN TO CARD THIS IS NOT NEEDED BUT IF YOU WANT TO DO THAT YOU CAN DO THAT YOU CAN ALSO NOE USE 1 OR 2 GB CARD RENAME TO BOOT FORMAT IT AND PUT BOOT FILES AND INSERT IT IN PI ALONG WITH YOUR SSD/USB YOUR CARD WILL BOOT THE SYSTEM BUT YOUR SSD/USB WILL BE USED AS SYSTEM DRIVE/SPACE
