This channel is a gold mine. I love the videos that focus on the Soviet style. It's a lost art in today's game. Could you make a video on how to box against the hanging jab? (This is the style used by Wladmir Klitschko where he fights with an outstretched lead hand.) It can be very difficult to get on the inside against this type of opponent. Keep up the good work and your channel will blow up. 👍

Try to improve your parry skills and head movement to get out his hanging hand also feints and change of rythm helps a lot.

That's why Maidana was so effective against Mayweather, got very physical, threw a lot of overhands, and had very tricky feints. But Mayweather is more than just philly Shell, he figured him out. No doubt it was a dogfight for him

Initially Maidana was awkward but later solved and Mayweather adjusted his stance and strategy to Maidana.

Coach Mcleod, I love this soviet style of boxing. It suits me better than the American style. Can you provide a typical routine?

Double up on the right straight. Most Philly shell fighters instinctively start to roll their shoulder whenever they see a right straight coming. I like using the first right straight as a throwaway punch to land my 2nd right straight

best way to beat philly shell is to Yes throw feints before stepping in, but throw in combinations, mainly to the body (chest, arm, whatever you can hit around the body, it doesn't matter just bang that body!!), AND THEN throw to the head with the overhand rear, thrown almost vertically to slice the philly shell guard from the top where the head is exposed. The only fighter who figured this out against Mayweather was Maidana. And if Maidana was just a little more accurate he would've won that first fight hands down. i wouldnt say stepping to the outside is that effective, for example stepping to the outside would just allow the opposition to escape off the ropes, and also staying in that outside position like that is still very open for the rear hand uppercut.

Philly shell stance only allows a fighter to counter at a certain distance once they roll and come back with the right hand they only have so much distance they can go if the try to counter with the right hand after they roll cause of that stance they have if you stay out of that distance and have a good jab it’s not too difficult

Ineffective against a master who can change levels, roll under the punches, roll in or roll out. As well you have to get past the lead foot. Not easy to do when the opponent is leaning back. Also remember the opponent can also hook you coming in. The lead hand while able to roll punches is in a position to hook off a punch while rolling hence the check hook or short hook to the body when opponent is coming in.

Very true but nothing is bulletproof in boxing. It’s a matter of timing, and instinctively knowing when to use it. Roy Jones Jr used the technique of stepping away from the right hand and moving to the outside of the lead shoulder. It worked but yet again Jones was incredibly gifted and athletic so could pull it off. We have just started doing tutorials. I will definitely note in future that not everything is full proof and that these are just some strategies you can try. They have proven to work against Floyd in spots before but overall it wasn’t enough of course as he can adapt to whoever is in front. Maidana used the overhand right against Broner and it was effective but Floyd utilised bending at the waist more against Maidana so was safe against the temple shot. The roughhouse tactics and punching the arms and shoulder was successful for Maidana in the first half. Also Cotto and Oscar tried these rough house tactics and had there moments. The left hand is of course is still there but that’s up to the boxer to strategically avoid that. Set traps and feint. If your athletic and agile enough with a good boxing brain you can get to that outside position without getting clipped with the left check hook or short hook. Good points though.

@@mr.boxingmoves486 he would step to right and done it multiple times to take away Toney’s right. After he done so he then landed his left hook also. Not saying he didn’t do anything you said he did but there was multiple strategies used and that was one of them.
