Maintaining a sub-5 mile (and 2:40 marathon) through to 55 is a crazy achievement!

Ya, I have seen people 20+ years older than me beat me in 5ks and mile races, and it makes me so happy cause it gives me hope that I have so much time to improve.

Nice video! I’m an oldster, just a bit older than you, and I’m inspired. It’s been a minute since I ran 4:39 in a road mile, but I think I may see what I can do. I think your advice is very on target and reasonable. Nice job!

I love this !!! When I was in HS my fastest Mi was 4:15 now at 43 - after not competing for over 14+yrs I did 3 marathons as of this year and on my 3rd I did a - sub3 - my fastest in the begging of the year was in the 3mi 18:36 now I can def break 18!! My question is wanna do 17:30 - in the 5,000m is it possible at my age . Realistically I wouldn’t mine running under 5mi - new subscriber love ur perspective thanks mate

YES - you can absolutely break 17:30. The thing to be mindful of when coming back to running after a long break is to build back slowly. Staying healthy and injury free is the main thing. If you can do this and build some consistency then you’ll hit those goals. Also, subscribe because the next video up on the channel is about running a fast 5k!! Remember, with all my training/racing videos, the times aren’t important it’s the theory behind running certain paces that counts, so simply apply the same principles for a 5, 6 or even 10 minute mile. Break it down into the core parts and you have the key. Good luck, Paul

Ran 5:28 in a baseline mile time trial yesterday, decided to set sub 5 as a goal. Will check back in when I get there!

I am trying to make it to a 5 minute mile this fall, and my PR is 6:54, but my average is 7.22. How long do you think it will take to get to my goal with the training you mentioned?

it is possible to do that type of intervals on road cause my place don't have track.what your suggestions when i want to complete the intervals on road
@marathonhandbook

Yes, absolutely okay to do the intervals on the road. Many people will be racing or wanting to hit the 5-minute mile on the road anyway, so no problem. If you have a GPS watch it it can measure the distance or use Google Maps, but even without that, go off time, 60 or 75-second reps will do the trick. Let us know how you get on in a few weeks.

can double threshold session days help me out with my mile time? And with the long run we should be pushing it harder that our easy pace right?

To be honest, I'd focus on a single-day workout if the aim is a 5-minute mile. Double threshold may have some benefits, but nail the single day before proceeding.
