Just bought a new 2011 250R, with only 2.9 miles on it. I've never ridden a motorcycle ever, so I can't wait to learn properly and get out on the open roads.

Thanks for the advice, I just got a 2010 Ninja 250 and I put 40 miles on her today with your method... I drove it normal. I didnt stay below 4k when fully warmed up, I hit 10k a few times getting up to speed but never went faster than 55 in 6th gear. This bike is a blast. I am still learning.

Just picked up my 250r from the dealer. When I read the owners manual I couldn't believe it said to stay under 4k rpm for the first 500 miles. It's simply not feasible to do that on a 250r! So yeah, you're right on the money with your video comments. Thanks.

you are right. If you are completely still and just idling, you can pull in the clutch and kick up as hard as you want, and it'll just kick up into neutral only. 100% of the time it does that for me.

I pretty much agree with what you said. I broke in a 2007 zx10r and I did not do the factory method nor do I agree with it at all. Vary rpms, do not redline, and don't go WOT. One thing I did was constantly load and unload the engine, rev up smoothy and let it rev down smoothly. AND MAKE SURE YOU CHANGE THE OIL AROUND 600 MILES. That is probably the most important part.

I agreed with everything he had. I went by my father's recommendation though (he's been a mechanic on engines for 22+ years) and basically (as I say in the vid) just ride it (no red lineing though) just ride it like you would as a commuter. and it works out great or you can do motomans, but I'd change the oil more frequently than the 600 mile service. (I waited till 700)

Based on my research, I've read (like the guy in this video says) that the most important part of breaking in a new engine is to not keep the RPM high for sustained periods, but rather to shift up and down a lot and vary the RPM's, and also to use engine braking a lot as you slow down. Other than that, I don't worry about it. Just shift up or down a gear or two for a bit if you find yourself cruising along at the same RPM for more than a couple of minutes.

Best advice for an answer to that question is to take the MSF course. Please for everyone's sake, including your own, take the MSF course. You will learn EVERYTHING you need to know about proper riding techniques. It will also give you good practice, and if you don't yet have your license you get it after you finish the test at the end of the course. You also get a discount on insurance for getting the MSF card. It's completely worth taking.

Absolutely, the Ninja 250 is a great bike, it's Kawasaki's best selling bike. Insurance is really cheap on them, but any of the 250's before 2008 will have more of that 1980's sport bike look

I rode my bike gently in the first 300 miles, changed the oil. then, ride it normally. using different rpms is very important, especially the high rpms. even an engine has been broken in, hitting the red line once a while is good for the engine.

In short the reason for riding the bike hard is to get the piston rings to seat properly. You have one shot to do this properly so that oil doesnt leak past them. The reason to ride it hard is at high rpm the combustion gasses actually go past the piston rings and force them to seat in to the cylinder walls. The cylinder walls are scuffed or (honed) and when the rings are seating they smooth out the honing. So if you dont get it right the motor is trash. When they smooth out that is it.

Rebel, around at what point did you start riding on the highway (maintaining a high steady RPM)? Most videos and info that I've found in my research have all pertained to the first few hundred miles, but none have touched on when they started with "normal" highway cruising.

I think you're right about everything there.... except I usually wait until 4000 miles to switch to synthetic. But yes, if you know what you are doing and are careful a harder break in is better. But most people don't understand engine systems, so they'll end up doing it wrong. I'm a mech. engineer & I've taken apart these engines before. So I'm pretty set doing it my own way. Can't recommend it to anyone else without walking them through it though.

they are expensive, but @ the time they were the least expensive sidi boot. They protect a heck of a lot of foot and leg & the aren't bad to walk in at all. + idk how but the make shifting like 100x easier. & it's really easy to get your running or tennis shoe laces caught around the foot peg or shift left. I've done it. They were also recommended to me by a guy I met on the road in my area. He had a lot of good advice so i trusted him. anyways they are important. Ankle injuries can cripple you

Hi Rebel, That was a very informative video. I am getting a 2010 Ninja 250R soon in the Green color (Fuel injected). Just want to ask if the run in methods mentioned here have any negative impact on the engine. I am not gonna be riding like hell (motorman style) but prefer to ride normally but skeptical with the information on the manual on breakin procedures. Why do manuals advise otherwise?

as far as breaking in my bikes.... I do it hard. But you really need big roads to do it & no traffic at least the way I do it. I've never had any problems. But it takes too long to explain it here & it's really important to warm it up 100% first. just idle'ing your bike does not = warming it up either. & don't spend a lot of time at the same rpms (especially high) until your finished. Usually my oil is pretty dirty too after those first 20-100miles, so I change it real fast.

250 will be fine.... that's what they start everyone on in the MSF course. But just as with any bike don't go crazy. A 250 can still wheelie & can still get you in trouble in corners. I started on a 250, 3 years ago. It was well worth it. If you get a 125 you won't be able to do any freeway riding, because of lack of power. idk about all states, but most have a law saying the engine has to be above 250cc to go on roads with speed limits above 40mph or so. GL man & take MSF & buy gear, even boots

leather or textile it doesn't matter. If you're doing only track riding you can get a 1 piece suit, but if your on the street you really need something with armor in it (elbows, knees, forearms, back foam, & especially hips). Because on the street... you are not going to fall off and slide forever. You are going to fall off & hit a rock, a guard rail, a pothole, or fall into a ditch. & don't over look good boots. ankles r #1 sportbike injury. I got sidi b-2's. ok to walk in & great protection
