Breaking in your engine properly is probably the most important thing you can do with your new motorcycle, and the 2021 BMW M1000RR is no exception. Because the M1000RR only has 2 piston rings (to reduce friction), it is more sensitive to an improper break-in procedure.
If your engine is broken in improperly your bike will lose power, consume more oil, be more susceptible to detonation, increase engine wear, and increase the likelihood of serious engine damage in the future.
There is no universally agreed upon method to break-in an engine. One thing that is agreed upon is that heat cycling and varying engine load and RPM is important. Most people think this procedure takes hundreds, if not thousands of miles to perform. This is incorrect. The majority of your break-in with a modern sport bikes is within the first 20 to 30 miles of riding.
What has worked for us is warming the engine oil to operating temp (about 15 minutes of idling). You then get the bike to 3rd or 4th gear at about 3000 or 4000 RPM then giving it 100% throttle all the way to the limiter, then releasing the throttle completely and letting the bike engine brake back down to 3-4000 RPM. DO NOT USE YOUR BRAKES when the bike is engine braking. This is another vital component in the break-in and just as important as accelerating. We repeat this process for about 30 miles then ride like we normally would. Varying RPM and throttle loads is very important.
This video goes into some slight details on what signs to look for on a properly ran engine and this will work for those wondering how to break-in their new motorcycle.
This should go without saying but this break-in should not be performed on public roads.
