Jeni, I couldn't agree more! I am in Toronto, and as we are all self-isolating, can't go out and find vocal lessons right now. Today, I suddenly realized that I am not supporting the breath as I sing. My voice has been quite "wobbly" lately. I found my way back to Claudia's tutorials. Just wonderful! Much gratitude Claudia! (Edit: I also don't believe it makes a difference what style one sings in either...I am more of a pop vocalist ;)

Bravo great lesson. I really appreciate the tone in your voice and your steady calm nature. Some teachers can get really upset when a student doesn’t do the lesson correctly. Making the student feel attacked and shamed. Then panic, anxiety sets in. It’s a lousy feeling. Your gifted with a lovely calm nature. I still think you came to the right place. Learning to yell and scream properly is a technique in singing and acting that is not only valuable but essential. Using your voice as a profession is hard on the vocal chords and injuries can be serious and life long if not managed carefully. Controlled breathing and diaphragmatic strength are the cornerstones to healthy vocal development, regardless of what activity you are doing. First learn to belt and project your voice while sitting and standing, then learn to do that while exercising (like jogging, doing sit ups, riding a bike, jumping jacks, etc.). You want to be able to talk and sing normally while actively moving around (without the activity interrupting the sound/tone/volume of your voice), and you are on the right path.

Very helpful. I am seeking to do an audiobook. Thank you. Just one point, if you happen to read this, young lady - you have a lovely voice but when you leap to a high note you should move inside your voice not outside. This is also a violinist's shifting technique which I used when, as a baritone, I had to become a tenor in 400 yards! (The distance from my home to choir practice!) Students of the violin also tend to try to jump to the higher positions but if they slide listening to each part of the glissando easily and simply stop when they reach the intended note the movement becomes natural and as beautiful or quick as desired! Don't be intimidated by pace or rhythm, certainly in practice!

Diaphragmatic exhaling must include the ribs coming in (one set of intercostals pulls them in when you exhale). The sternum does not fall, but the ribs coming in (sloooowly for singing) is a necessary/natural part of exhalation. The diaphragm rising (along with the ribs slowly coming in) absolutely DOES push air out of the lungs ... Otherwise, how else would one "release the air fully" as you say. Something must push air out of your lungs ... If not the ribs and diaphragm doing that, how would you get air out?? Yes, the diaphragm ascending is it's "relaxed" state, but it's rising does push air up and out of the lungs. You cannot directly control your diaphragm. It is a semiautonomic muscle. You control your diaphragm by controlling your intercostals. The young singer has a lovely and musical voice, but air in her tone would be better expressed if someone advised her to get her tongue out of the back of her throat. I think you'll like the article I mentioned in my new breath support video, "The Pressures of Breathing" www.claudiafriedlander.com/Pressures%20of%20Breathing.PDF It explains why there are so many different ideas about breath management, and why different ideas will work better for different singers. What works for me is to make sure I release my breath fully without "boosting" it at the beginning of a phrase, and then do a gradual expansion with the rib cage and adding some subtle compression from my abdominal muscles (which feels more global than a localized pushing in from the abs). But any movement that enables you to sustain optimal subglottal breath pressure will work, and there are other options. I studied under a wonderful voice teacher years ago. Unfortunately, she's a bit elderly and has some health issues now, so I cannot go back to her. I am frustrated because now, as an older singer, I've fallen into bad habits... and my greatest fear is having an "old lady voice" with that warbly vibrato! :( Since this virus I haven't sung much in the past several months. This video helps me to remember the importance of breathing technique. Any suggestions to maintain a nice spin to keep from having too large a vibrato? Of course good support is key, but just wondering if there's anything I may have forgotten? I do best with visuals. I'm probably overly paranoid, but I'm the worst critic of my voice..
@ClaudiaFriedlander
3 жыл бұрын
There are a number of things that can contribute to the kind of exaggerated vibrancy we refer to as a "wobble," i.e. a vibrato where the pitch fluctuation is wide and slow enough to draw attention to itself rather than just being an inherent component of your sound - I'd have to hear what is actually going on to make a specific recommendation. However, here is one thing that you can try that may help: Speak through the text of a phrase in your repertoire in a continuous, sustained voice, with the tempo and rhythm you would use to perform it in context, ideally closer to the range of the phrase rather than your normal speaking range. The result will be a sustained, continuous straight tone, i.e. no vibrato at all. Then try singing the phrase, trying to maintain the same level of energy, direction and expressive intensity that was present while you were speaking it. This can help you to notice whether you're inclined to perform the phrase with excessive breath or breath pressure, which can contribute to a wobble.

Claudia, this is so helpful! I purchased your book and I'm doing the exercises. You mention abdominal tension in the book, but I don't see how to address that. I'm an audiobook narrator and I my struggle is with relaxing the diaphragm for inhalation. Sometimes I can do it, but not consistently and find I'm gasping for air at times. Maybe I need to practice more away from the microphone. Any suggestions would be so appreciated.
@ClaudiaFriedlander
5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Suzie - I’m so glad you found the video helpful! I recommend the stability ball stretch with the spine in extension (page 100, fig. 6.17) is great for releasing tension in the rectus abdominis (six-pack). Keep in mind that the diaphragm is *active* on inhalation - it contracts and descends when you inhale and then releases and passively ascends when you exhale. There are a variety of things that can contribute to gasping on inhalation; release overactive abdominal muscles may help. If you haven’t yet viewed my videos on inhalation () and exhalation () these may give you some additional resources. The exercise on turning your breath around (begins on page 36) should help. You can apply this to your audiobook text rather than consecutive sung phrases. I offer online lessons, so please feel free to reach out if you’d like to work on this with me.

@ClaudiaFriedlander
4 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure what tensions you are feeling when standing and sitting that are not present when lying down, but it is certainly normal for breathing and singing to feel *different* in an upright versus a prone position because our alignment has a significant impact on things like range of motion for the diaphragm and rib cage. Where do you feel the tension, and is it just when you inhale or also when you exhale?

This mini lesson was incredibly helpful. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Not clear about your comment about not needing to "push anything" (approximately 3:35). Is pushing harmful? I wish I could contribute a small one-time tip without having to join anything.
@ClaudiaFriedlander
3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Ian 🙏 "Pushing" is harmful, in the sense that you are setting up excessive resistance in the throat and then generating excessive breath pressure in order to override it. By contrast, free phonation is characterized by allowing only as much resistance to be created in the throat as is generated by the simple vibration of the vocal folds themselves; as a consequence, there is practically no sensation in the throat, let along an intense sensation of pressure.

Where does vibrato come from, The diaphragm or the vocal chords?
@Rubiastraify
5 жыл бұрын
A little of both - vibrato is in the vocal cords, and is supported by the breath. It should feel natural and relaxed. Bel Canto singing focuses on conscious use of the breath to direct it toward the soft palate in such a way as to create resonance in the sinus cavities, and so to put very little stress on the vocal cords themselves. You'll notice some singers have no vibrato at all, and this is called, "white voice" or "straight tone". If vibrato is too fast, it's called a wobble or "tremulo". A false vibrato can be created by a pulse coming from the diaphragm. All of these can damage the vocal cords.
@ClaudiaFriedlander
5 жыл бұрын
Here is a blog post I wrote on the topic: www.claudiafriedlander.com/the-liberated-voice/2012/05/vibrato-hell.html Vibrato is a characteristic of free, healthy vocal production - it is a subtle, rapid fluctuation in pitch that occurs when all forces are in balance. As it is the vocal folds themselves that vary pitch, you could say that it comes from the vocal folds. However, it is possible to mimic or manufacture vibrato by rapidly pulsing the abdominal muscles. When people do this they may think they're using their diaphragm but it's the abs, and it is not a true organic vibrato.
