THANK YOU. For about 1 year have been waking up every 2 hours with horrible dry mouth. Been taping for about 3 weeks and haven't had dry mouth and sleeping SO MUCH BETTER. Didn't notice nasal congestion much before but it became an issue after taping. Now I must do nasal irrigation to keep night breathing normal, which is s fine. After one year of covid related stress, I felt self diagnosed ADD had become much worse and have been very sad about the intensity of my symptoms. I am now wondering if the last year of terrible sleep is part of the issue. Brain fog, bad working memory, unable to get my act together etc. etc had me very sad I am thinking this has been part of my issue.

I first want to say thank you for making this video. I also find it highly hilarious that y'all really had an entire presentation for a breath technique to help us insomniacs sleep. Absolute gold comedy here. It's like the other video I watched where a lady specialized her research into specifically oysters. You heard that right, specifically only oysters. Lord.

So, Sarah Gardner, you are actually anti-specialist, is what you're saying? Really? If only one aspect of a matter is focused on, & this with the clear announcement & consequent obvious understanding that it is a speciality focus at hand, your thinking is that the focus on the one aspect is totally inadequate & unuseful? And your "thank you" at the outset is therefore what? Sarcasm? How many medical professionals you have come across who specialize in everything of the medical field, &, as if that is not an impossibility enough, then present all they know within an hour, let alone in a few minutes? And how many have you encountered who even mention that nasal breathing should be preferred over mouth breathing? Think about what you're thinking. Your message of "positivity as an ideal" -- if indeed this was your intention -- in your poem at your channel's "About" page appears to fall short in this matter, friend. How about us just being grateful that there are those who have chosen to specialize in particular areas of study (in this case nose breathing), just so long as they're not closed & blind to the reality & importance of the other specialities?

Hi Patrick,I breathe through my nose through the day even during physical activity but I often wake up in the morning with an open mouth even after wearing tape over my mouth for sleep. This is super frustrating so any help would be much appreciated. Also aged 18 will stopping mouth breathing improve my brain and facial growth even now? Thanks

Hi Hugh, have you tried a chin strap, not sure why the tape is falling off (are you using 3M micropore tape, this is the one we recommend). It will certainly help with concentration and sleep, no question, and with dental health. Facial growth can only be addressed via functional orthodontry.

Well, my earlier comment isn't entirely true, last night I used some masking tape it's much stronger than the stuff I used before and last night was successful. Is using masking tape an ok alternative? I can't find microtape in any local shops so would have to find it online.

Hypnosis, or self hypnosis, can also really help with breathing through the nose at night. That being said hypnotism doesn't work well for everyone, and it can be challenging to find a skilled hypnotist.

Hi. Although I realize you recommend wearing the tape all the time ideally, I am curious if you believe (or studies show) that regularly wearing the tape and breathing solely through the nose will help habituate this breathing pattern so that over time if you do not use the tape some nights, that the breathing will have become significantly better (without the tape on) ? Or perhaps eventually you may not even need the tape to breathe properly through the nose?

Hi Jodi, I had a similar issue just last week. If you're using MyoTape (www.myotape.com) then there should be no issue with mouth taping as your mouth can still breathe if required. However, unblocking your nose (kzitem.info/news/bejne/14GBtWx6fGWUmqQ) and using mouth tape while you are awake, will make it easier to wear the tape when you sleep. Also, when you sleep, use pillows to prop yourself into a more upright lying position. This should help with your breathing.

The tape wont work. I breath through my nose all day no problem. As soon as I am at the exact moment of falling asleep the back of my throat relaxes and the airway to my nose closes off and my mouth opens and that's how I breathe. I haven't had a good night's rest in I dont know how long.

Hi Brandish. Don't sleep on your back. Slow your breathing with air hunger for 20 minutes before sleep. Breathe slowly through the nose using your diaphragm. Then it is easier to maintain nose breathing during sleep. Patrick

Dear Patrick, hope you'll read this. Thank you very much for the videos, I now know my condition is common and it can be addressed. unfortunately if all the above information is true, it means I haven't had a good night's sleep for the last decade! I must drink water during the night due to waking up with dry stinging throat, later to wake up in the morning feeling extremely uncomfortable and with a slight headache, burning eyes and overall lasting fatigue. It is also very hard to get out of bed, with the urge to hit the snooze button and get the extra "sleep". I'm from Australia, where can I find that Sleep Tube? Couldn't Google it. I want my sleep back!! I want to wake up fresh in the mornings. You say you never stopped using the tape, are you still using it? What else can I do/practice to breath right? I should mention it takes me forever to fall asleep and hard to relax my mind and breath...

@ButeykoClinicInternational

Hi Tall. It is very difficult to change dysfunctional breathing patterns that were developed over the years, especially at night when we do not have conscious control of breathing. That is why it is important to tape the mouth in conjunction with practicing Buteyko exercises. We now have our own tape called MyoTape that is designed to restore nasal breathing in children and adults. Unlike other lip tapes, MyoTape does not cover the mouth. Instead, it gently surrounds the mouth, bringing the lips together with a light, elastic tension that helps to maintain lip closure and ensure nasal breathing. At the same time, it allows us to open the mouth and speak. Please check it here: myotape.com. If you want to access more videos where Patrick shows Buteyko exercises in practice, please check this page buteykoclinic.com/buteyko-clinic-online-courses/.
