I built mine exactly the same way Got the freezer at Lowe's as a slightly dented item at a discount, too. I sealed it with waterproof epoxy putty, but I just ordered epoxy pond liner liquid that I'm going to coat the inside with, so I don't have to be afraid of damaging the seam sealer as I get in and out. Ink Bird controller works like a charm, and I have an ozone bubbler to keep the water clean and a fish tank filter also. These and the freezer only work when the controller turns on. Make sure to disconnect the power before getting in the tub, just to be safe.

How long does it normally take for the water to get to temp once plugged in and set?
@john99776
Жыл бұрын
@@brendanpenn187 I fill it with a garden hose, which has water at about 67 F. It took a few hours to drop it to the low 50s. Once it's initially chilled though, the freezer has no trouble at all keeping it at temperature while only running a bit occasionally. Water holds heat (and cold) very well, so a cold tub like this is very stable and uses only a negligible amount of power. I left the lid on the freezer and keep that lowered when I'm not in it. This cold tub works great, for a fraction of the price of a manufactured one. (Side note: I actually keep jars of water in my refrigerator to take up space and keep the fridge from running a lot and using excess electricity - once you get water cold, it stays cold).

Then I searched "cold plunge near me" hoping to find a gym/spa I could get a membership to that had one. Nope. Finally I had the thought I bet those genius YT DIYer's have some ideas! Shoulda come here first! Gonna have this set up by the weekend out on my patio! Super excited! I was doing cold showers and it was great, a few minutes of cold actually releases more dopamine, for longer, without the negative plunge below baseline, than cocaine! (Science, not based on experience lol.) But during the summer my water is waaaaay to warm, so this will do the trick nicely!

Love this video. It inspired me to change from buying ice everyday to fill a tub to getting a chest freezer. Huge kudos to Nick. However word of caution as noted by one of the earlier comments (@andybartush185) - aluminum lined chest freezers can rust quickly. Mine, from Best Buy, rusted in 2 months and now is leaking and has water under the lining floor. Been spending time draining, and then plan on: 1. Epoxying the entire interior 2. Once dry, put an extra lining over this (right now thinking of going super-simple and just using a thick (3 mil) plastic drop cloth that I'll change every few weeks 3. Filtration (Marineland filter and UV, but will skip the Ozone) Again, credit to Nick since I would never had tried using a chest freezer for cold plunging, and ice from the market can add up very quickly. But if you don't take these extra preparatory steps, you may be in line to replace your chest freezer sooner than you might have thought. Good luck everyone, and happy plunging!

I got a 20 cubic foot broken freezer and cleaned it up. I sealed it with Gorilla waterproof tape. I have an Apex 86 filter. I started 7 months ago with daily use and the water is still clean. I keep the water cold with ice. I have 4 stainless steel bowls that each hold a gallon. That is 8 lbs of ice each. I keep the water between 38 and 40 degrees. Each day I take water from the unit and refreeze it, so I don't consume any water and the ice freezes fast because I only have to lower it 6 to 8 degrees. No danger from electricity. I have a separate freezer to freeze the ice bowls. Costs me virtually nothing. Thought I'd pass that along. 32 lbs of ice daily keeps the water cold and clear. Im so used to cold that I don't notice much impact from cold plunges, but I feel better when I plunge.

I'm really glad I researched from multiple sources because I watched this current video and realized that the majority of things said in this video are not the best practice and are actually things that the majority of people say lead to mistakes and problems in the project. Also lead to water waste and time cleaning I.e. not the best caulk No epoxy No UV or ozone No filtration Metal interior vs plastic(best) No leg comfort taken into account Also, never go in a cold plunge after training... unless its running/endurance. Plunge before training.

I think cold showers may be more beneficial than the bath. When water is standing you can get used to it, while the other water which is moving it is like taking your warmth and leaving. It is way harder for me, especially since it hits the head more. But also the movement of water . It is like windy air vs stationary air in a way. Even if in both cases same temperature it is different.

Nice. I don't want to jinx myself, but I've seen guys spending serious money on sealants and epoxies etc. To say nothing of the effort involved in sanding, priming, painting etc. I plan on using a secondhand freezer, there's plenty out there. Often not old, just people not needing them any more. Given that by design they're close to watertight anyway I'm sure that a quick mastic around the seams really should be enough. But like i say, i hope in not jinxing myself. At present I'm jumping in an unheated swimming pool, but as the weather warms up that's not going to do it any more. I also have a sauna and plan on getting the inflatable heated jacuzzi going soon. The contrast between all those options should give a pretty good physiological response i think. But these seriously cold plunges look like a game changer. Thanks again for the straightforward option. Everyone else's just looks like overkill now

@@Max-Jacob I ended up doing my own conversion of a chest freezer. It was definitely labor and material intensive but a pretty fun project. Mine is 7 Cu. Ft. which is quite small so I can fit at 6'0 tall with athletic build but it's a squeeze. I do have a tiny leak somewhere but I have not taken the time to drain and check for a leak yet as it seems very minor. If I was using appropriate size freezer I would take the effort to plug the leak but I am ok using it until it stops working and then I can build another one that is more appropriate size. In terms of long term durability, converting a chest freezer (if built correctly) is your best option. However, it is not a cheap or easy project. I think the simplest build (for similar cost) is to get an inflatable tub and rig it with an aquarium chiller using appropriate hoses. Then you build insulation around it to make sure the chiller does not have to work overtime in the summer hear. This video is a great example of how to build with insulation. This will significantly extend the life of the chiller. Link: kzitem.info/news/bejne/1IGgsKima6d4qpg Depending on your ability to source materials, the freezer conversion will cost minimum $400+ USD not including the cost of the freezer. This does include what bare minimum for filter/sanitization. You can buy a very solid chiller for somewhere around that price and inflatable tubs are becoming cheaper every few months. It seems that every inflatable brand sources from the same manufacturer because all of their designs and materials are the same. Happy to answer any questions or refer you to material I used for my build.

Hello, I hope you're well. You say that you shouldn't get into the water while there's still power to the freezer, which I can understand. But I've sometimes read that you shouldn't even touch the casing as long as it's powered? What do you advise? Please, thank you in advance.

Hi! I wonder for how long have you had this freezer and are you still using it consistently? I heard that aluminum interior isn’t optimal for making it a cold tub. Have you experienced anything in particular? Thanks!

Well I heard it depends how the ice is broken . You want to break the ice carefully and try not to puncture the side walls because behind that there is sometime of insulation .

How long have you had your tub? Just curious if rusting, leaks etc are an issue

Cool video! Thanks man. How is it with the WEIGHT? - what did you do to assure, you don't break out the back/floor when standing in it. measuring by eye about 30cm*100cm*60cm is 180 liters and then your weight (I assume around 85kg) is 265kg so how could you be sure?

If I want to keep this in garage … it seems like draining the water would cause a mess .. Any tips on that process ? I am wondering if buying a filter would make it better and not have to change water Otherwise I will have to keep it outside where water can drain Where do you keep yours?

I had the same question... I just bought my Freezer that has an aluminum interior and now I'm seeing a lot of ppl saying I need a liner (which is not cheap). Wondering how important this is, or if I just need to be careful not to puncture the walls and possibly drain the water more frequently..

So when you get out from doing the cold plunge do you plug the freezer back in and leave it running.

Nice video! Very informative and useful. Was just wondering wondering how you drain it? Do you use the drain plug and, if so, do you have some sort of hose connected?
