thanks so much for taking the time to upload this. not sure why the stock looks so heavy, seems like most wireframes are the next size smaller (3/16"?) maybe it's just the way it appears, but slightly thinner frame material would probably be easier to work with without being too flimsy. I'd prolly mount that anvil on a piece of wood and put it on the floor rather than beat my garage floor until it chips

Good stuff...have you seen CNC wirebenders? My local library has one that can bend up to 1/8" steel, aluminum, or brass.

I so enjoyed the directions on making my own Christmas design. I have a commercially made frame that is about 8 years old. It has been restrung with the lights twice. I need to replace the wiring again now and would like to do it myself. I am wondering if you have made a new video on how to go about doing that? Where do you get the clips, and how to change directions using the light strings. Thank you. Sherall Donovan

Can you tell me, once you have your wire frame completed, how do you string your mini lights? were do you buy the clips and what kind do you typically use. But more important, how do you change colors where needed. Most light sets are to long, for the shorter color sections on the frame and LED or commercial Incandescent lights are one piece so the bulbs are not removable in order to change the bulb colors? The only way I found is to use the removable incandescent mini's and buy replacement bulbs in different colors. The only issue there is, its very time consuming and you have to make sure you match the voltage of the bulbs. Any suggestions would be great.

You should make these frames and sell them. I am looking for just the frames that I can add lights to.

This is a really good tutorial thank you. Sorry if this is a dumb question but, where do you buy the heavier wire. I have check all the hardware stores, farm stores, fence stores... no luck... Do you just buy metal rods in bulk? Bought some wire but it's not heavy enough...says its 9 gauge but too flimsy once I build something..thanks for the help.... also do you have a link for the cool metal bender you are using. I bought a floor model from harbor freight and I am struggling with it. Thanks

I haven't seen 1/4" or even 3/16" stock in the big boxes. I use a local steel supplier that carries everything from rebar to think plate steel. they come in 20' sections either hot or cold rolled.

How has the rust situation been over the years? Is a coat of spray paint doing the job? I'm weighing the pros and cons of spraypaint vs. powder coating.
@adamc1572

No matter how mach spray paint I've used, there are always joints that are missed and i get some surface rust. But overall, every piece I've ever done has held up perfectly over the years. The trumpeters that I built in this video are knocking on 6 years, and they still look great. The lights faded so bad that I had to replace them, but the steel is doing just fine. If you have a powder coater I'd weigh using it, but I certainly wouldn't invest a nickel into it for this purpose. 3 cans of the cheapest black spray paint has proven to work just fine for my purposes. hope this helps!

I did one last year and all I did was spray 2 coats of metal primer and then 2 coats of white spray paint. So far, it is holding up quite well.

Can you use 1/8" rods for smaller wireframes? I want to make a 3D star for a tree topper?

Yes, they just won’t be as sturdy. As long as it’s properly supported it would be fine

one thing I can't find any info on is how the actual animation is achieved. what kind of switch moves the lights from one position to the other?
@cclightshow
9 жыл бұрын
Connie Scott We're using a LOR controller for the animation. Each trumpeter has 3 channels. 1) All lights for the exception of the trumpet in the up or done position. 2) Trumpet in the up position 3) Trumpet in the down position. If you want to have the trumpeter at "parade rest" or lit with the trumpet down.. Channels 1 and 3 are on. If you want the trumpeter in the "playing" position. Channels 1 and 2 are on. Regardless... I call channel 1 "ALL ON" because you always need that channel to be lit. Otherwise, you just have a floating trumpet in either the up or down position. :) Hope this helps.

I bought the HF Ring Roller and cannot get it to roll straight. Every time I roll steel it spi-rolls. How did you get yours to roll the steel straight?
@adamc1572

Grab hold of the side that is exiting the ring roller and guide it straight, use a pair of vise grips if need be. I have that same problem at times. Especially when rolling larger rings.

Hi Iwas wondering how you rap the lights and have the exact amount of lights maby you could even make a video I would like to make these for next christmas
@cclightshow
9 жыл бұрын
round74golf I can do a video on this. But basically, I use clips. I clip each light to the wire to hold it into place. When using incandescents, it's hard to get the exact light count. If I'm 1 or two over, I usually cut them out of the circuit, but for anymore than that, I'd just use a black out cap.

I want to make some wire figures for my grandson.. can you please tell me what type of steel rod to purchase? Better yet, if you get your steel online, can you tell me which vendor is best. Thank you.
@adamc1572

Robert, I purchase my steel from a local steel supplier. I would recommend doing the same. I wouldn't buy from the internet due to the shipping costs, but that's just me. I have used a variety of rounds in my work. The rounds in the video are 1/4" hot rolled. You can buy hot or cold rolled, hot is cheaper and that's what I tend to use. Some people will tell you that cold rolled is better (stronger), but seriously, we're building wire frames here, not habitable structures that need to bear a load :) All the wireframes I built this year, I switched to 3/16" hot rolled. it's just as sturdy, and I was able to bend it by hand which was awesome. good luck on your projects!

how much does all of it cost to do?
@cclightshow
9 жыл бұрын
Christopher Engel Steel is about $6 for each trumpeter, the lights are about $4, and the clips are about $8 for each. So, in materials, you're looking at about $18-$20. This, or course, does not take into account the controllers to make them come to life. Check out LOR or Renard for A/C boards. I haven't built an LOR board in a very long time, and the last time I built a renard board, it was about $65

@@michaelcarlson174 there are a bunch of places that sell them. Search christmas light clips for wire frames and it will pop up a bunch of sites. I'll look up a few and write them down in a bit for you.
