When it comes to laying out the joists for your deck, it's important to start with a clear plan. For the 1x6 boarder, you'll want to begin by marking the triple joist on the outside of the ledger first, at both ends. This will give you a clear starting point for the rest of your layout.
If there is a mid-boarder, mark that next, ensuring that you have a clear understanding of where each joist will be placed. From there, pull a 12" layout from the outside of the third joist in. This will help ensure that your spacing is consistent and accurate throughout the entire deck.
It's important to note that the ledger is a finished product, so be careful with your marks. Take your time and double-check your measurements to ensure that everything lines up properly. If the layout ends with a tight space, center the last joist in-between or max span is 16". This will help ensure that your deck is structurally sound and safe for use.
