That mesh here in WA is $50. A much cheaper option is Saxon Gutter Guard for $3. 180mm wide and 8m long. The 180mm width is perfect for placing sphagnum moss around a PVC pipe (I use 20mm) and secure the mesh with small cable ties (around $1 for 25). By using a PVC pipe for the centre, you can improve the pole by adding cotton wicking rope and wrapping it around the PVC pipe (prior to adding the moss). This allows you to fill the centre of the PVC pipe with water and effectively have a self watering pole.

@@simpleplanty They were the poles that you can put together. I already bought a few weeks ago a 48 inch coco pole. But for large monstera yours look the best. I found all the ingredients you have and when my plants get large I will make several. I actually have 6 monstera deliciosa shipping. There was a problem with one of the orders and the lady gave me two extra for the trouble. My house will be a jungle with 6 monstera deliciosa and one thai lol.

@@simpleplanty @Simple Plantation I think a panel would be impressive. It would be a bit rough repotting so I would have to have the panel completely separate from the pots which is doable. I have a two-bedroom apartment. I'll never use the 2nd bedroom for anything, and that one gets afternoon sun in 1/2 of the bedroom like my bedroom. So there will be plants in there too! :D I have a feeling I'll be making lots of moss poles/panels! lol. I have always surrounded myself in a sea of plants decades ago. Then for my job I lived in a hellacious state which was desert in the bottom half. I couldn't grow anything inside because it was too hot most of the year to have the windows open or the shades open. So I finally retired to somewhere I can have them again. I'm kind of in a plant frenzy right now lol. I've always loved surrounding myself with living things. And they are so healthy, and relaxing. With the three monstrosa d. from the one place, I’m getting a baby Ficus Elastica Ruby. Once I get all currently shipped plants, I’ll slow down until the spring. All of the monsteras I’m getting currently shipped will have heat packs with them in case during the travels it gets cold. So I don’t’ want to order any during wintertime. I think I’ll have all the plants I need anyways 😊

@@StormyAfterDark anytime, I love hearing from plant obsessed parents and alike - so ramble away! This is why I started this channel! Wow!!! I'm also in a 2 bedroom apartment too - although from the sounds of it, yours would probably be bigger if you're gonna be able to house all those monsteras. They will grow quite fast, in personal experience. During those hot times, did you ever own cactii? That could have been an awesome option. Plants also give us oxygen, so surround away 🤩 One of my next favourite plants are ones of the ficus family - so I'm also excited for your Ruby! I have a Tineke that absolutely is loving life. They key here is light in my opinion - they absolutely LOVE bright light! Hoping all your plants arrive safely 😘💚🌱

Hello from the US James! How compact should the moss be in there? Not too much so it's fairly loose throughout or on the firmer side?? Thanks in advance!
@simpleplanty
Жыл бұрын
Hi Kae! Nice to meet you - you’re absolutely right; not too compact to allow for the roots to make their way through the moss. I’ve also found that too high a density of moss also makes it harder to wet the pole over time, as the moss does dry out and then sometimes when you moisten it, it doesn’t ‘sponge’ as well. But also bearing in mind, not too loose either! Hope that helps ☺️

Hi James, thank you for your detailed video it was well produced and informative. I have two questions....1) does it have to be PVC coated mesh? 2) do you fill the entire pole with moss which would then sit at the bottom of your garden pot and be sitting amongst the soil or lica? 3) Woops, one more....does this have any pest management? Thank you for your videos!
@simpleplanty
2 жыл бұрын
Hi Daniella! Thanks for watching! 1) doesn't have to be - I find that the PVC coat is durable and fit for purpose, what other alternatives are you looking at? 2) I would put it entirely to the bottom of the pot, so that it keeps it sturdy - nowadays I don't fill the whole pole with moss (just from where the moss is above your substrate's surface) 3) Not particularly for this - you could apply your usual pest management to your watering when you moisten the pole. Hope that helps! 😊🌱

How do you actually plant the pole in the pot though? Do you make the stake longer than the mesh?
@simpleplanty
2 жыл бұрын
Hi Megan - I generally just stake the length of the mesh that I purchase without extending it and it goes straight to the bottom of the base of the pot when potting up with your medium, so that it's a sturdy support. Hope that helps 😊🌱

If you need extra strength you can add a wooden stake to the outside of the pot and tie it to your moss pole To keep the moss pole from leaning

Or, instead of cutting all those tiny pieces of wire in such a time consuming manner, you could have just tied the top, and threaded the entire wire through every couple of squares without needing to cut it at all. That would have been quicker, easier and smarter. Smarter yet, would be to just use small zipties, which is what I use. Way better, and more convenient for changes.
@simpleplanty

That’s a great tip, gotta work smarter and not harder 😂 I think your tips would ultimately make it look better too, instead of having all these loose pieces of wire. Will try next time, Thankyou!
