Hi, this is Mike from Mike's Trommel. I was really entertained by your video. I've used mine now over ten years and the heavy rocks of gold prospecting have beaten it up a bit but still functions perfectly. I just went out to the claim this last weekend and folks are still amazed at what it can do. It's much easier to use than hand bucket classifiers. Your design using all-thread is a useful upgrade that I may incorporate on the next build. Of course, I would have to use two on each end of the barrel because of the weight of the material passing through. I also have been coaching folks to use large fender washers at every connection on the barrel. That spreads the stress more evenly. I would also encourage rubber shields on the axles to prevent premature wear at the bearings if your readers are prospectors. Job well done! Mike Laine

Thanks for the upgrade info. Mine is still holding up well. I am however thinking of trying to build a larger one. Also I'd like to attach it to a permanent base. Thanks again

I like it that you used the all thread rods. Means you can put the rods through the spindle and just measure even distance from each side of the bucket and tighten the centre nuts, rather than used strips of metal and guess how long you are going to make them to join the spindle as some o the others have been made. I like the rods idea better. So mine will be a little bit of Mikes but most of your version. As you said you can make the base anyway you like, as long as the trommel is on an angle. Cheers, and well done to you and Mike...simplicity is the key, and it works.

Really like this trommel. I really need to build something this spring as I have 3 worm bins I need to harvest. Two compost bins and then also I want to screen the main chicken run. Last year I did it with a 2x2 rough cut 2x4s with 1/4 wire cloth and shaked the day lights out of it into a wheelbarrow. Doesn't take long to get tired out. Thanks again. Blessings.

Hi, how does one determine the required size of the drums, e.g. I want to use two drums, each 6 and 10mm "sifting" openings, roughly 45cm-50cm diameter and 50cm long and the two joined together to make a total length of 100cm, can that work?
@Growyourheirlooms

I don't see why it wouldn't work adjusting everything for the added length

Love this idea, as sifting by hand is not fun. Unfortunately, the link to his web file no longer works. Hopefully it's down temporarily and the link will be updated. I'll have to keep checking back to see if his site gets updated. Having his materials list would be helpful, but I will definitely use your directions and vid to start building my own trommel this spring.

get a job, mow lawns, help a neighbor and im sure you can come up with $40 worth of materials. Heck, you could probably ask neighbors for scrap parts and get the parts for free! Or check dumpsters people dump usual stuff all the time
