because my bios was so old that it did not have uefi, i had to format another drive i had laying around and put omv on that via the installation, as booting from usb was not an option. on the first boot it showed an ip address like in this video at 4:47 but when I went to the ip address it said that the page could not be found tried restarting the nas and it now does not show an ip address and this whole time i have not been able to log in, when i try to it basically just refreshes and tells me to put in a login again

I spent a lot of time exploring this possibility and now I can say with certainty that merging disks in this way does not give any positive result. If I cannot copy large files to the created pool, then this is a useless thing. If one disk becomes full, the system does not transfer files to another disk in this pool. You can merge disks of any size through Software RAID, and only in this case the files will be automatically transferred from one disk to another. All you need to do is create a RAID Stripe. Thank you for your hard work anyway.

Hmm.. I had an easy quest to set out for, but surprisingly I came up empty-handed. What would you say is the most cost-efficient way (in terms of hardware) to get a large amount of 2.5" SATA hard disks into a RAID pool? I have nineteen 1TB drives sitting around, I'm probably looking at using 8 to 12 of them in an array. What would you do if sheer speed wasn't of any concern at all?

Creating a NAS using mystery meat hardware is a recipe for disaster if you are depending on that data you are storing. Even with custom hardware and software you cannot totally depend on a NAS to be 'unbreakable'. This is a hobby project not a Mission Critical setup.

@shehan_samarasinghe

why?
@peterdobson3435
2 жыл бұрын
@@shehan_samarasinghe Business needs reliability. There are special kinds of drives that are specifically designed to withstand the vibration from neighboring drives that are used with NAS. They are more expensive, but they are also way more reliable over long term use. Reliability is essential in a mission critical business environment where downtime means loss of reputation that is critical in business relationships. If you are responsible for answering to businesses you service, it will be your head on the chopping block if the NAS goes down and stays down for unacceptable period of time. That will effect your business and your livelihood along with any employees you have.

Parity has to be => largest drive. I don't ever use this method of filesystem design; I prefer ZFS with a Z1 (RAID5) pool. This means you have to have all same size (and type really) of hard drives/ssd/nVME. But your data will be protected. TrueNAS and TrueSCALE supports ZFS. Linux can support it with some effort (manual admin). unRAID I believe has ZFS support now.

The next video up is how to crack open a hard drive and unstuck the heads lol. New huge hard drives aren't that expensive bro. A fast 16tb enterprise grade drive is like $250 w/ 5 year warranty. Don't do this. You'll pay 10x for data recovery (if possible). Hard drives all have a lifespan. They don't last forever.
