In the fall, instead of all that soil, you can layer straw or hay bales in the bottom. It will decompose over winter and create a great substrate.
@maryannrondinella5680
4 жыл бұрын
Just be sure the hay or straw wasn't treated with a long-lasting weed killer. I was going to use horse manure and old hay, but David the Good, who used to live in FL, advised that the University of FL has developed a persistent weed killer that passes right through horses, into their manure, and it will still inhibit plant growth. So make sure you know how that hay or straw was grown.

I have them cut all of the boards in half and buy extra blocks for the 8' section to minimize warping over time. I also use rebar to stabilize the blocks. Be careful pounding in the rebar though. The blocks can crack easily if you miss the rebar. Also place sticks, twigs, leaves, aged straw, free wood chips and some raw veges in the bottom to minimize the amount of soil you use initially. Some people even use the dirt from the "paths" between the raised garden as fill. Great video!

Really great idea! About the only thing I might do differently is I wouldn't put the landscape cloth under it. The reason why is I would want to encourage earthworms to come up into the soil from the ground to add to the fertility of the soil. Also, for those who can't transport even the 8 foot boards, why not buy four more of those bricks and have Home Depot/Lowe's cut all your boards into 4 ft lengths? That way you can transport the boards. Maybe even double it up to make it twice as high for an even deeper bed. This looks to have lots of possibilities! Thanks for sharing it! :)

One of the best gardening tips ever! I wish I knew about this when I started gardening. This is seriously one of the best ways to garden using a raised bed. How would you protect the wood during the winter months? It can get pretty cold in PA during the winter. I don't want to have to break the bed down if I don't have to plus if we get another mild winter I was hoping I could just keep the raised bed down and plant greens like kale, spinach and collards.

This was VERY helpful and informative!!!!! Thank you. Also, here is an EASY tip for everyone wondering what to do about the grass.... you can put a few layers of cardboard boxes (rip them open and lay them flat)... It’s a great biodegradable weed/grass stopper that can be used instead of purchasing landscaping fabric. It’s free if you just save your old Amazon boxes, etc.

This was the best video I saw this season. Putting in my gardens in Florida, had one for years when I lived in N.C., and even with my in-ground bed of 14×90, I just wanted/needed more. I am limited on sunny sites, and ended up with some very odd slivers left available that just didnt seem feasible to till and plant. I shared this with my hubs, and he ended up building me one 4×4, that gets full afternoon sun, for all my herbs. Also, he built a 4×32 plot in full sun, which I will install double cattle panels lengthwise, and plant both sides with my heirloom tomatoes. That's 42 tomato plants! I'm in heaven! He wanted to make it easier for me, since we are older, and I have some arthritis in my back, so he did a 3 block/board height and filled it with 9 cubic yards of composted Black Cow manure. These beds are going to be loved for years, thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Hey, that's a smart idea to use these bricks for compost bin! If make a two compartment style, then could easily remove the center short crossbar to turn it over to the other side. I hate the idea of hot compost bed because they have to be so big to get a good temp inside and turning it is such a chore . But with a modular set up like this, seems access would be so much easier.

But after watching your video I think we are going to use the 2"×12"×8' boards and one planter block to get us started. I have a greenhouse that is 36'L×18'W×10'H so I have wooden panels I have my flowers on now. I want to make the raised beds to go from opening of left side to the back and come up to other side opening making a U shaped bed in the GH. Since they are only 4'wide I can still keep two rows of my wooden panels and have plenty of room to move around...thanks for the video I can finally show my husband what I am talking about Happy Gardening from Wild Rose Acres.

A suggestion...to kill the grass and weeds, spread a tarp or dark plastic or cardboard cover over the grass where you plan to build the raised bed. Leave for about 2 weeks, remove the covering and there will be nothing growing under it. Build the raised bed and dump the garden soil and you are good to go. Preferably remove the plastic unless it is food grade to prevent leaching of poisonous leachates. Cardboard should be ok, but make some holes for drainage. Also, you might be able to find a local supplier of garden soil with compost, who can deliver the growing mesium., instead of lugging it. All the best!

The only suggestion I would make would be to forget the landscape cloth and to use cardboard instead. It still acts as a weed barrier in that it kills the weeds, but it doesn’t prevent the soil biology from moving into your beds like landscape cloth does. The worms that are drawn to the cardboard will break that down and the castings they leave behind fertilize your garden as well as the tunnels they make allow oxygen and water to get to the roots. Soil, after a while compacts, the worms help to prevent this. All this add up to a healthier environment for growing in. Hope this helps.

Thank you 🙏 I’m in Queensland, Australia and I only have a concrete slab to plant onto at the back of my unit. I’m looking forward to using this idea only building it higher. I’ll put some rods into the holes in the bricks and use them to support concreting reo to frame vertical plants.Thank you 🙏 for this super fantastic idea. Oh and by the way, I absolutely love your garden. Thanks again mate xx

@@radolfkalis4041 It HAS come down of late. 😀 I used fallen pinebeetle-killed logs last year and probably will again, but at least the lumberyard prices aren't so bad as they were. Redwood here is ALWAYS super expensive, though.

@14:00 genius! However, I noticed in a few vids that no one is leveling the land. Or, does it really matter. Esthetically it would look better with multiple beds next to each other. Also, I enjoyed shopping, the details written on the screen, the code numbers on the register, and the pace. Thanks!!!!
@GrowFamilyNetwork

Nah I don't botger with leveling really I just try to choose the most flat spot I could choose and that's where we try to place them

not leveling and not having a crushed rock base that it sits on, will raise it's ugly head 2,3,4 years at most, down the road. then one side or the other will sink. is it the end of the world? no. but if you want it to look sharp without having to re-do it, do it right the first time.

I was so excited that I rushed out to get my wood. I had a copy of your receipt and everything. Do you know that Home Depot here in Michigan charges $20 for the 2x12x8 ???? I got lucky and purchased the slightly damaged ones and saved 70% .....bought the last 5 of those jokers. Well, 3 months later I just laid them down because the ground has exposed tree roots everywhere. Had to level the ground.

Good information. If I need any more garden beds, I’ll try this method. I like garden beds made out of concrete blocks better because I can plant stuff in the holes, but I’m getting too old to be lifting those heavy blocks. This will be much easier too! Thanks again for sharing!

Thank you Louisiana Family Garden. I wish I saw this video 2 years ago when I started to learn about gardening and grow some vegetables. I saw this video last night. My husband and I went to Home Depot today to get the materials and built the raised bed in less than 30 minutes. So quick. So easy. No heavy duty saws or tools needed. The prices are higher now after COVID and with inflation. But still better quality, sturdier and bigger than the metal ones I bought online and took more time to put together. Thanks again.
