I'm very sorry about your Mom. I'm an Autistic Adult and I live with my Mom. She's my Mom and my best friend and I realize that she is the only person in the world who really gives a damn about me. Between the two of us we figure things out because I see things that she doesn't and she things that I don't. My Mom is my second brain too. Lately I have been very troubled thinking about the day she dies. I think at that point I'll be making my way through the world but she will be with me in my memory bank and I will always be filtering my decisions as, "What would Mom say to do in this situation." I will pray for you! I'm trying to prepare for that time by getting therapy to prepare me for getting a job and making it stick. I struggle with not being employed.

I use an old-fashioned exercise book. I sit in a comfortable place and hand-write. I start a fresh page for each topic I need to process. Often, an imaginary person asks questions like, 'What could you do about that?' or 'What would that be like?' I write these comments down too, off-setting them a bit. It's amazing how often I form a plan that I can commit to. It stops all that buzzing in my head which doesn't really go anywhere.

I actually pretty recently started implementing this idea to my life. I have about 8 pinned notes in my notes app that help me keep track of laundry, the coffee I make and when to get more, daily tasks, my bedtimes, grocery list, any daily learns I have, and so on. It’s been a HUGE relief on my working memory by writing stuff down so I don’t have to actively remember it all. Plus it saves from the stress and anxiety caused from forgetting something important. Reminds me of a quote by Albert Einstein that said something about writing things down to remember things, so you allow your brain to just worry about thinking EDIT: “Paper is to write things down that we need to remember. Our brains are used to think.”

No matter how you implement it, I think there’s a lot of value in having a system to help process incoming information. There’s a role for this in work environments called the project manager. Ultimately, it boils down to: 1. Gather info: make an unordered list so you can step through each item without missing any 2. Categorize and identify tasks (if any) per item 3. Estimate time required per task - give yourself a comfortable margin, especially if you’re not sure 4. Prioritize tasks based on due dates, difficulty, and time estimates 5. Sort tasks by highest priority and filter by category

I recently found that bullet journaling is the only form of task organization that I can actually stick with! It's important to have a table of contents, otherwise it's impossible to find stuff again. And a pre numbered journal because I won't keep up with numbering pages. But I can put all the things in. I can keep it perfectly symmetrical thanks to the dots. I can doodle - and it's actually encouraged! And I have several ribbons for bookmarks - one for the last page I wrote in, and a few spares as a quick reference for pages I'm still actively working on. Also - colored gel pens make everything better!

Likewise. Examples: "Eat that frog"- do the hardest thing first and then the rest is easy. Nope, I need to do the opposite- it's so hard for me to get started on anything that I need to get the small things out of the way first, and then I will have momentum to do the big things, and fewer distractions. Break big tasks into smaller, more manageable tasks? Nope, I have difficulty with task-switching, so I need to organise small tasks into one big sequence so that I am executing a sequence rather than switching between many small tasks.

I find I naturally make a lot of connections with information I'm learning. I think it's part of why I have excellent memory - for facts and abstract concepts at least. I have notebooks full of notes and working things out, they tend to be themed but sometimes ideas cross over. One of my main executive function challenges is inertia and in the past I'd find it hard to start a task and hard to stop once I'd started. So I use scheduling, mixed activities and alarms to help with that. I do live better with more task switching but I can't say it feels like a natural fit. If I know I'm going to be doing one thing for an hour I let myself focus all the way in so I get that monotropic satisfaction. My other main challenge is dysregulation and for me there hasn't been a quick fix for that. Usually it's a trauma association and so it takes time, strategy and support to start feeling safe and confident enough to approach certain things. Some I have mastered and others are still early in the process.

I log my tasks through different formats which helps with prioritizing. Important dates go on my physical calendar, but I have a digital planner for my weekly academic tasks, handwritten lists for the most important tasks of the next 1-2 days, and also a comprehensive list of things that aren’t immediately important but need to get done. And thanks to this channel, I started writing down what *the* most important 1-2 tasks are for my day. (My brain tends to assign every task as equally important without considering how immediately important it is.) Logging my tasks in different places allows my brain to see the relative/contextual importance of those tasks.

I read that book. I have it. I'm so much slower than the average person in reading, comprehending & 'getting' the point. So, would be nice if found solution to that. Because often feel too dumb even though I know I'm not. Constantly feeling lost 'in translation'. On the other hand, I'm much faster at some other things than the average person, so in that case I feel impatient when waiting for others to catch up. I have more ideas than it's possible for me to capture in notes, etc. However, I adore systematizing & organizing pretty much everything, especially information and data. I run my own household as a warehouse with spreadsheets for everything plus bunch of them for my daily and personal life. I also help my co-workers with organizing their cubicles and creating templates and spreadsheets when they need to organize themselves, so I am go to person for that at work, which I enjoy so much. Also, I keep detailed calendars for life & work. I like minimalism & not much fluff, so regular spreadsheets work just fine. I don't like fancy apps as I find them sensory overwhelming. I have all this in place and then I still fail to guess what day it is & what's going on with me and around me. Then I realize I made it through yet another day in spite of myself.

I use Google Calendar because I like having a visual, but for reminders I prefer to write things down. I also write lists of things for the week and for the day on a whiteboard I have on my wall. Sometimes I use the sticky notes app for the same purpose. I use the Motion app to do the "task tetris" for me at work- a bit expensive, but it saves me executive functioning energy so I think it's worth it. If a task stalls before it's finished, I write what I'm waiting for and what I need to do next in the task notes. My greatest EF difficulty is with getting started- haven't figured that one out yet.

Tagging information helps for me to keep it sorted. Because I can tag things with multiple labels instead of some hierarchical structure. So if you use e.g. a notes app, I prefer ones that support tagging (e.g. "recipe, vegan, pastry") - that is much more dynamic and creating a new subcateogry doesn't mean I have to redo sorting for everything. Same goes for bookmarks. And I prefer things that sync between devices so that I don't have to keep track on which device I have something stored.

Obsidian is a wonderful piece of software. I'm finally able to iterate on my second brain structure without leaving information behind. It is flexible and extensible to provide unrivaled amount of freedom, so if something doesn't work out - I don't have to migrate to a new software. And I'm still able to find and interlink any information even if it isn't organized perfectly. I'm still trying to get used to botom-up approach, embracing emergent structure. But it is liberating to know I don't have to keep trying and failing to find a working top-to-bottom hierarchic structure. That being said, there is now a whole wave of different software in the same area. It is really overwhelming to look at it in attempt to spot the solutions for some remaining unfulfilled needs.

For work, I use white index cards with a marker colored border on the top (for different departments). They are put on a special board that holds them that I can carry around. When I'm done with the task, I put them in a special box. At home, I use running lists. One for long term things that need to get done like 'new insulation'. One consistent weekly schedule with 'med pickup, laundry, plant food, wash hair, take out trash, wash clothes, etc.' One with short term stuff that needs to get done like 'get lumber' or 'send birthday card'. Sometimes I will even make an expanded list if I'm working on a special project that has a lot of components. Crossing things off is very satisfying. I also have a 2-year paper calendar notebook with all the birthdays, appointments, jobs due, etc.. I agree, if it goes into a computer folder, I will never look at it again.

Short Form looks great - I’m gonna check it out. I use an iPad and Apple Pencil very regularly and lately I’ve been using the Freeform app to create mind maps. It’s really simple and helps me to see how different concepts relate to each other. In general I use a digital calendar with reminders set, but I also use a digital diary in Goodnotes to plan my week or day. It helps me to process what’s coming up because I am writing it out by hand and seeing it all laid out helps to determine my priorities. I am still late for things, confused by things, and overwhelmed by things. I still have shutdowns sometimes and can’t achieve anything that I had planned. The digital diary allows me to copy and paste a task so that I can defer it to another time or day. I feel better being organised but it’s not a complete solution for my executive functions’ supply and demand issue 😂

I literally can barely survive a day and am worried I will fail to execute something important, like going to work when I am too lost in my hobbies such as drawing and such; or that I will fail to pay a bill, etc. Time is not linear in my head and it is so difficult to keep up with just the basics of life.

So I went to read the summary on Shortform to see where they got the 6th category for the folder structure from and I still have no idea lol. The main things I took from the book were the CODE concept (overarching system/practice to the para method), the PARA method (core storage structure), and the Progressive Summarization technique (this was the hardest part for me to understand but once I did it was massively helpful). It helps my partner who has ADHD massively, though I had to read the book and help him do the things (in hindsight it may have become a bit of a special interest or hyperfocus for me, still working through things to figure it out). Not that I minded as it was what led me on the journey as to why I can't seem to get started on my own things etc., which then led me to look at ADHD for myself and then eventually Autism for various reasons which I won't go into now (as much as it's tempting to once I start typing). Anyway, I digress. The main point of my comment is to try and give back in my own way and explain the concepts from my perspective in the most concise way I can manage🤞in case anyone finds it useful. I doubt I'll manage to get all the info in though so anyone reading this might want to do their own further research. I personally find using Audible while reading through the Kindle app helpful for the times when reading can't keep my focus. CODE C - Capture. I took this as taking notes on everything you feel/think you need to. This can include book highlights, videos, audio, pictures, and even handwritten notes (yes this is hard for people like me who like to over-collect info but that's where the other steps come in) O - Organise. This is where you sort anything from your "Inbox" however often you need/want to into one of the PARA folders (with it being digital you can never really lose anything unless you make the conscious choice to delete it), this stage can also allow you extra time to process if the note is even useful for you which is especially useful if you have a habit of over-collecting info. D - Distill. I prefer to think of this as Condense or Compress. This is where you basically take the external information you have from whatever the note is and condense/compress that information down to the most important information needed or key elements that sparked an interest depending on the contents of the note. *note* This is where the Progressive Summarization technique comes in (apologies but I need to explain that part separately as it's a bit hard for me to explain) E - Express. I suppose this comment is a pretty good example of what this part means. While it can mean making a YT video or writing a blog post it can also simply mean sharing information you find useful/important with other people, even if it's just family and/or close friends. After all, what good is knowledge if we don't share it... PARA P - Projects. This folder is for anything that has a set time frame to be completed in/by, you would then make more folders in here for your various projects/goals. The author recommends anywhere between 10-15 things going at once but I assume this is for neurotypical individuals so feel free to keep it to 5 if you need to. A - Areas. This folder is for things in your life that you want to keep track of but don't have a time to be completed in/by. So the folders you would make in here could be things like a folder for a family member that you would like to remember their birthday or keep track of any important information they have shared etc. R - Resources. This folder is for topics of interest, you can then use this part of your second brain when needed for any projects that are relevant to any interests you have. A - Archive. This is the folder where all other folders can be moved to when you want/need to, this is good for keeping other folders clean and tidy. For example, you could move individual project folders here when completed or even topics of interest if they no longer appeal to you. (this is very useful when you seem to lose interest in things quickly). As long as you never delete anything and just move it to your archive it will always be there if/when you need it again. Progressive Summarization So there are 3 steps to this and it does require re-reading certain parts. It does not need to be applied to every note, just particularly long notes like book highlights or a whole blog post etc. 1 - Base Note - As you read through the note you put the parts you feel are most important to the outcome you want in bold text. 2 - Bolded Text - As you read through only the BOLD text you then highlight the most important parts of that. 3 - Bolded and Highlighted Text - To make future reading easier you can move only the highlighted parts to a bullet list above the original text or to a completely new note if preferred. For anyone who makes it this far, I will leave what has turned into a mini-essay (I really did try to keep it short XD) with the following. The main beauty of this system for me is that like our actual brains, your second brain can be just as unique as you ❤ though hopefully less chaotic than mine 😄

Would be interesting and useful if you could do book reviews that are actually related to Autism. I know there are a few of us here in the comments who read and research extensively, and especially on that topic (scientific but also personal experience narratives). I also know you said before you are not much of a reader, so your bad for that. I know some people in the comments mentioned some fictional characters that are autistic (I personally don't watch movies, TV, TV series, Netflix, etc.) and usually those things are a far cry from reality anyway, so reviewing real world research on autism would be very useful to many people who live with it.

I feel like a loser. Like a human scientific subject to study, observe, and research. That's _all_ we autistics are, aren't we? We're JUST autistics. And it gets worse. I was once taken to my boss's office--with her and her chef colleague--for touching my coworkers too much (CASUALLY on arms or shoulders). I was always very outgoing and tactile at work. The chef told me that we need the workers to be comfortable in a good work environment. That I shouldn't talk about anything other than work and school or tell my stories, because they may be inappropriate or upsetting (can't remember her exact words) to others. Now yeah, I pretty much didn't have a filter, but I don't think I said anything horrible. I only meant to have fun with my crew. I really didn't get specific information from the chef about subjects and references. She liked that I was outgoing, but she made it sound risky and in need of limits. And again, that I shouldn't touch anyone without consent. I own my mistakes, and I wouldn't have made them if anyone showed signs of discomfort. Plus, commenters won't ease up on the shaming. It's all "She was right" and "you sound like a creep" and "You shouldn't be touching your coworkers." I can't redeem myself, I can't be a good person, I can't be anything more than a guy on the spectrum. We're inferior human beings, aren't we? My sister's boyfriend was right.

I haven’t finished reading to book yet but I found the CODE system the book is based on helpful. It gets you to only capture the essence of something, which you organise based on projects you’re planning to work on. So I’m not sure I understand the issue you have about ‘sorting through everything’ digitally because you should do that as you are capturing it if you follow the methodology? I used to do the paper notes as you do but I never got them finished because I wasn’t storing my information by my outputs, so it felt like I was redoing the information gathering again. That and the constant presence of my to do list visually represented on my wall created demand avoidance, even in my rest time as it was staring me in the face. It is taking some time to convert my old note system to output based but I’m finding it very valuable and it has already made me more productive.

It's very brief and doesn't really detract from the video, but just wanted to make sure you know its there. For a while I've wanted to do a "Second brain" project too, but my biggest hurdle feels like the *transfer from brain to external storage*. I feel like I can work with information so much faster in-mind, and getting it out of my mind takes a lot of time; not really hard to do, just takes a while. I do believe that's something I should practice, and I do try, but it still feels a bit discouraging.

I have a notebook that is my second storage for work information. At the end of the day, or in the following morning, I look at my slack app history, my google calendar, my IDE history (I'm a dev) or whatever else I used for work and I take notes on what I did during that day. This allows me to "unload data from my RAM to my disk" and feel my brain lighter after. And if my manager ask me what I was working yesterday, last week or last month, I can just flip through my notebook and give them a summary (and sometimes even a more deep report, because reading my notes usually brings back the interesting details of a certain task).

I always, had a huge problem reading big books with lots of pages! I prefer 2 read books that's are audio or books that aren't big or with tons of pages, that I can get enough information I need out of the book, n not overload my mind with 2 much data!

phone timer app i don't have to remember when to do things I do regularly because I have my phone make noises at specific times every day. Remembering time-related things is one of my biggest struggles. and I outsource one-time schedule exception handling to my mom. With sticky notes on the wall opposite to where I sit every day storing my schedule information and the walls of our house littered with what's essentially a self-drawn picture dictionary in multiple languages I study, there's much less I have to keep in my head Those electronic storages are just a mess, but phone alarms help me immensely

Oh, brilliant idea... I have tried so many ways to collate my ideas but they end up a forgetten jumble of paper and note books...I love that you move and combine the notes with other notes on the note wall...feels like genius idea but I guess its an open filing system.....this could be designed into an app....actually just remembered my ipad has this function...ooooo...😊

What I would give for a second brain. Preferably one that was a bit more functional than this one. Er. For one, Shortform looks like a good thing. But I do you mind me following up on this filing solution? My memory is terrible, but I'm not convinced that just putting a thing away allows you to forget about it. Even when I can't remember a thing, I think it is an access issue and not a storage problem, in which case, I'm still wasting memory capacity and looking for more things to store is only going to make that problem worse. Am I alone in this? I liked the post it notes as an analysis tool though. Also my personal filing solution - daily folder named, in this case "0208", and then tommorow, "0209", and if I need to remember to do something in a month "0308". And never delete anything. Ever. Just zip it up. And then offload it onto usbs. And then label them. Also "_clunker" folders. Everywhere.

Geeesh. So far I’ve just been able to make myself use my calendar in my phone and program both alerts everytime. 👀

The tricky part of these systems is they work well when I have time to go through all the stages. But if something has to be dealt with without that preparation stage, I’m screwed, just spewing loads of detail. How can you identify key ideas or a decision without the laborious (although sometimes enjoyable if you have time and health on your side) gathering and sorting process?

So…there’s some good information here, but the line between content and advertisement looks really blurry to me. Maybe it’s the editing or the scripting or both. It just reads like an ad and it’s hard to take in the information when it feels like I’m being sold something. This feels very different from your other videos. It doesn’t feel right.

It is an ad, since that app sponsors this video. Perhaps he is using it as a sageway to introduce the topic he wants to talk about anyway

This is a great idea but this problem sounds just like if someone has ADHD It's very interesting that they seem to overlap in that area.

Digital planning tools like Notion do NOT work for me. I hate Notion actually. It makes my brain break. The only thing that works is a good old fashioned diary. I use my own version of the Bullet Journal method.

Trying a split personality solution wouldn’t be a good solution either. Our Masking is adding that second brain and as we know those are exhausting.

I used to carry note pads, then a PDA, and now my phone. I write myself notes, record audio notes, take pictures/videos, and set up calendar notifications. I call my calculator my brain's math co-processor.

yeah... I think VR glasses with headphones could also work well as a digital replacement for the Thalamus to filter real-life data in such a way that I could deal with it. I am a bit sarcastic here because I think the thalamus part of the brain is the problem in my case, another new method doesn't help that much to get it to work better.
