Tip: don't use water based anything to seal MDF, use oil base. Also, use Bondo puddy filler it's harder and dries faster. Then DuraTex as a durable finish.

I'm a commercial and residential contractor. I'm not criticizing anything my friend. For the most part you did a great job. 2 things to trust me on though.... I know you love Gorilla Glue but it sucks big time. It's garbage glue across the line. The only good Gorilla product is the Duct Tape. Anything else is a waste of money. Watch the comparisons on Project Farm here on KZitem and you'll see for yourself. Best glue you can get is Titebond III Ultimate in the green bottle. Lowes sells it. It's the best and it's the same price. Best hole patch/filler for wood by far is mixing the saw dust from your project and titebond glue together and filling the holes with that. When you sand it you'll have the same exact surface texture as the wood, it's hold is so much better than Spackle (Which can crack off) and you can even stain it if you wanted to. Hope this helps.

Nice video. I thought about trying this a while back but I was afraid the cuts wouldn't be straight. I wanted to order a nice custom box but was afraid to go thru all that wait time and it arrive damaged or something. I've bought prefab that didn't fit bc apparently the seller didn't provide correct measurements so the box didn't sit as far back as I wanted which made me lose far too much trunk space. So I just bought a lot of tools over time instead. I'm currently playing with different values for the box size and I even made a box frame out of old shipping boxes just to really see how much space it'll take up. I plan to make the box when the weather is warmer.

yes, franklin titebond. is top knotch. and the dust from your cut & glue is the best putty. i built furniture for over 17yrs. drill pilot holes for screws. use at least #8 or larger wood screws, if you decide to cover the box in the monkey fur or even a toletex material ( similar to what is on a guitar amp cabinet). ive glued so many different materials to wood & wood products. contact cement is messy, dangerous & non - forgiving. i suggest a product from 3M its called - super77- ive used many cans. it is a little costly. but it sticks & holds.

Two tips to avoid all those splits, MDF is very strong when running screws through but very weak when running screws into the edge. 1) Do NOT put screws into the end gain within 2-3 inches of another edge. 2) Drill largest diameter possible pilot holes and drill them slightly deeper than the length of your screws. The drill bit must equal the diameter of the screw shank at a minimum, slightly larger is better so the threads barely cut into the MDF then use a few drops of glue in the edge grain holes and be careful not to over tighten and strip out the hole (be careful NOT to fill holes with glue, cause hydrolock splits)

They actually make MDF screws that you can buy at Home Depot that won't split the wood
@TrevorTurkington
3 жыл бұрын
Great video. As a woodshop teacher I can recommend if you keep your screws a bit further away from the edges of the MDF corners you can avoid the splitting on the ends. MDF if very finiky so its a good idea to to some test drilling on corner pieces to get the hang of it first. Again, great explanation!
@ATCA

This is always my fear with using screws on the edge of any wood. Even tho i did pilot, some till split :/. Usually i use brads, clamps, router, jasper jig, etc. But on this box, its all about what a guy could do at home. Without buying $20 in clamps, an air compressor they may or may not have, a brad gun, etc. So screws it it. If one cracks i Usually just fill the crack with glue and move on. Is there any way to help prevent the cracking? Besides coming a bit further in, and drilling a deeper pilot?
@TrevorTurkington
3 жыл бұрын
@@ATCA you can increase the diameter of your pre drilled hole. There is a size that is guaranteed not to split for every screw. You may find it doesn't have as much grabbing force when you screw it in. You could just use the bigger drill bit for those holes near edges if this is the case.

Shit I went blind shopping and realized the size blind I needed wasn’t a standard size(not sold pre-cut) but they did sell blinds that could be cut to size and also had a nice table saw specifically made for blinds (THAT I MYSELF WAS ALOUD TO USE)!! Anyway don’t give up because someone commented saying that “YOU CAN’T” because that someone most likely doesn’t know the area you live in as well as if your local store allows you to use their equipment! To the person that said “YOU CAN’T” I’m not trying to be ignorant towards you in anyway I’m just saying my local Home Depot let’s their customers so maybe his does!

Thank you so much for sharing great video. Pls help me: My old enclosure (Sony SS MF400H) needs to be repaired. So which size of Spax screws is suitable in my case (thickness of MDF of SS MF400H is 10mm)? And which's alternative screw if Spax is not available? Thanks
