interesting that you decided to level the deck in both directions rather than have a fall for drainage in the direction the boards run in. Won't water just sit in the grooves and dry slowly causing a build up of dirt, slime and rot? I have been building with a 1:100 fall to assist water run off when grooves are upwards.

I've just finished building my new deck, I used the same deck boards as you've used, but I did a lot of research and the actual right way to lay the deck boards is deep ridges down to allow airflow. My old deck was ridges up, A carpenter did it 17 years ago, I was scourged with water pooling etc, basically it wasn't done properly. I also made sure to make it slightly higher from the house, so water flows easily off the boards. My joists and boards are opposite to yours, so running toward the garden.

Hi, great vids and great deck. Just wanted to understand how can the board above the joist hangers sit level with the adjoining board? The galvanised straps look to be several mm higher. Do you just angle the first board back or shim the adjoining boards?
@Vince_Paul
3 ай бұрын
So you bolted wood to the outside wall? That a big no no, as you has breather bricks at that level and you have just blocked them up. You should have small pillars close to the wall and use them to put the cross plank on. This leaves a small gap between the wall and the decking. So the air brick at the bottom can breathe and water can run off. The same as the decking should be 1 or 2 mm difference from the brick wall end to the outer end so water can run off. The same as every bit of wood cut or drilled need to be treated to re-protect the wood. You wouldn’t need so many bearers, if you had the right amount of feet. So many little mistakes.

Nice video, as usual. However, it seems a tad incongruent to box in all of the drains and downpipes if there is a need in the future for inspection and/or maintenance, without having to disturb and/or remove the decking or sections. Also, ia there going to be issues with bolting rhe deck up to rhe house so as to potentially be allowong water to sit near the wall, or will the render protect it? And, was there any fall or gradient considered to help witj water run off away from the house?
@homeimprovements

Thanks there where removable inspection covers for all the drains and a stop clock 5 total with regards to bolting to wall never had an issue but may modify the design on future builds to avoid just that and yes we missed that 1% fall to left hand side 😊

I would advise people not to use this video for advice. So the 6x2 you've bolted to the house. 1. You've drilled large holes under the houses damp membrane so rising damp can occur inside the house and cause structual issues. 2. There should be atleast a 20mm spacer between the house and the wood. Water will get inbetween the house and wood and rot the wood. 3. You've made the deck completely level meaning there's no water run off. More wood rot.
@homeimprovements
