I can appreciate how Mr. Jacomet's terminology and his explanations in such a manner in that it wont alienate any type of viewer. Too often with gentlemen this invested into this world forget that everyone starts somewhere. He justifies the items (three piece suit, sport jacket) that might seem odd or foreign to beginners promptly and with history to back it so that even the experienced can appreciate the information without it seeming repetitive

Thank you for your great educational videos, Hugo. Your videos helped me a lot to choose my first suit and gave me the idea which direction to go further, I am coming from IT-startups where people usually wear what's comfortable - shorts, sneakers, t-shirts, etc and when a start-up grows into a large company one has to suit appropriately for business meetings. I had no idea whether to go to a custom suit or buy from a store. By chance I came upon your channel on youtube and was amazed, ih has everything I need to know. Nice video as always. About the three piece suit and odd jacket, it reminds me of odd waistcoat. I don't have a three piece suit but there is this one suit of mine that looks better worn with a combination of an odd wasitcoat. What do you think of odd waistcoat? Is it considered a staple or just a complimentary?
@SARTORIALTALKS
6 жыл бұрын
Dear Rio, excellent question. I would not call an odd vest a staple but it's an interesting piece of clothing. Back in the days it was looked upon as a higher level of dressing, because it meant that you could afford a cut in another bolt of fabric (a different from your jacket and trousers). Cheers, Hugo

So, so elegantly described. It’s great to see and hear someone focusing on the staples in a man’s wardrobe in an age of “anything goes”. My father wore tailor-made three piece suits. He would save up until he had enough money for one. When he wore it, as a child I walked taller too. Now that I start to think about it (at his best) he was the one that taught me from a very young age the importance of recognising, buying and caring for the best quality clothes and shoes he could afford. “Quality not quantity”. You have helped me remember a happy memory of him that I look back on with real appreciation and fondness. It is easy to highlight the negative aspects of a person’s behaviour over time and paint their whole character that colour, harder to step back and see that we all have that light and shade in us. Thank you again for making this enjoyable and informative series.

At 33 years old having 5 suits (4 only used on business travels / 1 for specific night events) and 5 Sport Jackets, I am not in a rush but I am already aiming to find THE three-piece suit possibly after 35+ or if I get married at some point. One thing that I find alluring is the use of a pocket watch with a proper fob chain, that's another element I will surely wear with that three-piece suit, let alone a decent dress shirt with french cuffs that I like sooooo much. Call me "old man", I don't care.

As to this comment about wearing the same suit as 2 days ago, what is the cleaning standard for suits?? dry clean after every use? once every couple of not messy wears??
@SARTORIALTALKS
6 жыл бұрын
Dear Jorge, please no dry cleaning. Just hang the jacket immediately after coming back home on a proper hanger in wood (not a metallic one) with large pads for the shoulders (take a look at the Hanger Project website), and if possible suspend the hanger close to an open window (or any place with a flow of fresh air). And this will be normally sufficient to maintain your suit in good condition. The ideal being, of course, to have a sufficiently large wardrobe (of, let's say 6 or 7 suits / jackets) in order to leave 5 or 6 days between each time you wear the same suit/jacket. Hope it helps, Cheers, Hugo

Is it unacceptable to button your single breasted jacket when wearing a vest? I like the flair of a 3 piece suit but I'm wondering if not buttoning the jacket when wearing a waistcoat sacrifices some of that masculine V shape that a 2 piece suit is designed to provide. What do you think, Hugo? Cheers, Maxwell.
@SARTORIALTALKS
6 жыл бұрын
It is totally acceptable to button your jacket when wearing a vest ! And it is also totally acceptable not to do so. Men's style is (and should remain) a matter of personal taste. This is why at Sartorial Talks we are not at all interested of producing "do's and dont's" videos like you can find hundreds on youtube ! We are interested in helping gentlemen who need are looking for inspiration and not lessons. Elegance is a journey, not a destination. Cheers, Hugo

@snoopeZayko
6 жыл бұрын
It is accetable to do both but ultimately it depends on your taste. I love to leave my jacket unbuttoned when I wear a waistcoat because some times I wear a watch on it and I love the whole british vibe it gives off. I also found that if you leave your jacket unbuttoned you appear slightly taller and slimmer because the first time you see the suit your eyes focus on the V that the vest creates and the natural eye movement is from top to bottom and in that moment if the eye does not see anything blocking the waistcoat like a buttoned jacket then it will automatically perceive the person as taller and slimmer than he is. This effect however is more evident in a 3 piece suit of the same color and in darker colors so any odd vest will partially eliminate this illusion. Some men who are skinny and tall may want to avoid leaving the jacket unbuttoned since it accentuates this feature. Usually men who have medium height and weight are more likely to wear the 3 piece suit this way.

The youth of today will look up to Gareth Southgate (England Manager) as a style icon, due to his (in their eyes) sharp waistcoat look during the World Cup. One of my favourite style icons is Michael Caine in his splendid Mohair Tonik 3 piece, in the movie Get Carter. How very apt you compare it to wearing a suit of armour! This suit was the character’s way of showing how successful he’d become and was his costume to face the trouble that was coming. It was certainly a strong style reference point for me as a young man. Super advice in this video as always. Thank you Hugo! Edited for spelling.

Kinda funny, I have a cheap suit that is only used for weddings or funerals (which doesn’t fit well and looks terrible). I decided to start investing in quality sport jackets first as I will more than likely dress in a “business casual” sense more often and find the sport jackets to be a great way to up the refinement. For me it’s a great way to “dip the toe” into wearing jackets and ties since they pair well with blue jeans and sweaters and stuff I already have. But I will be definitely be investing in a quality tailored suit(s) soon, especially as I move up the ladder professionally.

Mr. Jacomet, I love your videos! You have such an inspiring enthusiasm. With the blazer or a tweed jacket I fully agree with you, it‘s definitive something you have to buy after you own your basic grey and navy suit. I have very few suits, but I always try to buy them as 3-piece suit, since you don‘t have to wear the vest but you have the possibility to do so. And the price difference is not too high... For me my third suit would be a double-breasted one, and I‘m pretty sure you will get a lot of comments on that as well. So far I didn’t dare to buy one...

Thank you, Mr. Jacomet for this second part; when I watched the first part, I felt tempted to ask you about vest, since I have never seen you wearing one, so I thought vest were not of your taste. What a mistake! I have two made-to-measure three-piece suits, but recently I bought two vests off-the-rack, so I started trying odd-vests: sports jacket + pants + vest or two-piece suits + vest (contrasting colors, not matching them). Since I now know you like vests, I wanted to ask you, what is your opinion about wearing odd-vests like I mentioned before? Thanks, as always, and cheers from Colombia.

Good Afternoon J., odd vests can work very well indeed. But you have to master the color/pattern mixing rules in order to make the whole outfit harmonious (because if you use it with a sport jacket, it means you'll have to mix three different colors). It requires some experience, but it's possible. Normally, a contrasted vest (worn with a suit) also creates a more "formal" feeling. Cheers, Hugo

I thoroughly enjoy watching every single video on this channel, Mr. Jacomet. I like how the curved stripes from your collar align with the rest of the straight stripes on the shirt. Also, the rounded edge of the collar is very stylish. Love from India!

Here is my issue. I love the 3 piece suit, I think it looks fenomenal. However I am 26, I can't justify dressing that elegant on a "day to day". It's odd to put on a 3 piece suit and take the bus to work... And then you meet your colleagues who half haven't even hammed their trousers.. I don't know, maybe I just need to go for it but I already draw a lot of attention with sport coats and pocket squares or some tweed jackets ( and some nice shoes of course)

Dear Hugo, Thank you for your reply and taking the time to share a great article. I am definitely going that way, I bought my first 3 piece suit which I'm trying to find an excuse to wear it...a little secret, I have tried it at home a few times already just to "try it one more time". My style journey has been a bit tricky since I've moved from different countries but definitely feeling better about it. Thanks for so much content to learn from. Kind regards, Tomas

The last time I wore a best without jacket, several people at the event started treating me like the service staff and asking for drinks. I explained I wasn't, but one of them pointed out I was wearing a service vest. I didn't like the treatment, so I would say keep the jacket on. And most people just don't understand this kind of clothing.

Thank you Hugo for another informative video. I purchased a three-piece suit last autumn, as I like the look. You are spot on that I am in the minority, as many people do not wear three-piece suits, and I do get a number of glances my way as I go about my day.

Dear Waltski, thank you for your comment. I'm sure though that you also receive compliments. Oddly enough, very few men dare to wear the three piece, but when they do, people normally appreciate it and tell them! Weird isn't it ? Hugo

The stand-alone waistcoat is my go-to piece. The signature of my current style. I think men and women look great in them and could benefit from adding one to their wardrobe. The traveling jacket sounds interesting. It might be the answer to my quest for a garment that has plenty of storage options, looks more elegant than average outerwear, and doesn't have the harsh sounds of synthetic fibers.

Yes Daniel, a travel jacket is a great piece of garment to have. It is usually crafted in non-wrinkable fabric to remain perfect even after a long stay in an overhead bin. Thanks for you comment ! Hugo

Some even say you can mix the jacket or waistcoat with other suits or trousers, so that give five with one pair of additional trousers (but never the matched waistcoat and jacket with odd trousers). My only three piece is from my Grandfather and being vintage medium brown polyester, not something that can be worn often (haven't for years when lost weight). My grail suit be a three piece tweed fitted to me (nothing worse than a wrong sized vest).

Thanks Adriel for your comment. I hope you'll get your grail suit soon. For a three piece tweed suit, take a look at the work of my good friend Paul Walker at Walker Slater in Edinburgh Scotland. You may find your grail suit at a fair price. Here : www.walkerslater.com/menswear/menswear-clothing/tweed-suit-jackets Hope it helps ! Hugo

Now when I think of wide lapel, I think of Hugo! Never found it so elegant before. Question: I love the idea of Three-piece suit, is there any reason I cannot make it my first suit? (i.e. with or without vest for different occasion) Thank you.

For those wishing to add a waistcoat to an already purchased 2pc suit: MTM double breasted vests are reasonably inexpensive and a light/ice grey or buff/light tan material will pair very well with most suits. A minor amount of care might be taken when doing so if one were to care that they run the risk of people thinking that they are trying to approximate a stroller suit.
