In this video I show how to build your own external vlogging microphone for a GoPro Hero 4 Black action camera. This microphone will also work for all GoPro 4 models as well as GoPro 3s as they use the same audio wiring on their USB input. This microphone is an omni-directional microphone, which means that it is very good at picking up sound from all around it, especially dialogue for vlogging as it's close your voice. The video also demonstrates the microphone being used for vlogging with my GoPro 4, on a 3 axis stabiliser gimbal, on a simple pistol grip and then simply hand held with the GoPro. Here are a bunch of links for the components used. The all important microphone capsule is the Primo EM172, which is available from MicBooster.com micbooster.com/primo-microphone-capsules/8-primo-em-172-z1.html The body for the capsule can be taken from a wide variety of cheap lavaliers and other small microphones. Here's a list of some really cheap options that all have a body/enclosure capable of holding the 10mm diameter of the capsule. amzn.to/2Tpe06r amzn.to/2Tr0xel amzn.to/2QnerMG You probably wont need a foam shield for plossives or light wind protection as there's likely one with the mic you use for the body but a lavalier deadcat would also be a great option for mild breezes etc. Here's a cheap one that I use myself for my small mic builds and it works very well. amzn.to/2TofgH5 Finally, you will need a GoPro USB to 3.5mm audio adaptor cable with a right angle at the USB end. Again, these can been found very easily around the internet and are very inexpensive. Here are some links but you may be able to source one elsewhere. amzn.to/2R94I1Y amzn.to/2RvWPmt amzn.to/2SzPmAh In total and if you shop about, you can build this microphone for less than £20. If you are unsure of which are the live cable ends after chopping of and stripping back the USB cable. If you strip back the cables at the 3.5mm jack end that's left over after you chop it off, you will be able check or bell out those cables to see what are the live elements and then just use the same colours at the USB end for the two live and the single ground cable. Or, you can always do a quick test by soldering the cables to the capsule and testing it in your GoPro before you do the final installation into the body. At least that way you are also double checking that everything works before finalising your mic build. The reason for two live cables is because one feeds the right input of the GoPro audio and the other the left. Once combined and soldered to the live pad of the Primo EM172 ECM capsule, it will mean that your mono microphone will appear in both the left and right sides of the stereo recording. Like I said in the video, this is an overview of how to do this process which will be enough for anyone who has an understanding of such things to be able to reproduce. This guide is not designed for anyone who has never done anything like this before or who doesn't have a basic understanding of microphones, electronics and soldering. On the point of soldering. I never show myself soldering in my videos because I'm terrible at it :) So here's a couple of links to KZitem videos that best show how to solder. kzitem.info/news/bejne/o4KcvoyIn4R6rY4 kzitem.info/news/bejne/0q6nwH5-bIWXgWk kzitem.info/news/bejne/qqah0ZqBcmVooIo kzitem.info/news/bejne/sqapn6uljnmcqX4 Anyway. Hi. I totally regret getting shut of my Hero 4. It is a great little camera and has way less problems compared to the modern GoPros. In fact, I can't even remember having any problems with it, it was that good. I'm sure you'll love it 👍 Cheers, Dave.

Hi. I'm quite sure you'll like it, it is much better than the internal mics and doesn't add too much bulk to camera. I'll be building a stereo mic for the Hero8 soon. Cheers, Dave.

Alright Ian. Yes, the Primo EM172 sounds really good in this configuration. I'm still on the fence as to whether I should go to a GP7 or Osmo Pocket. This GP4 is still a very good option for picture and with this mic it has good audio as well. So, other than the obvious differences of the stabilisation of the 7 and Pocket, I'm not sure how much better they'd be for picture. Plus the 7 would need the audio interface adding to it and the DJI still haven't released the audio interface for the Pocket, which is a little ominous. Cheers, Dave.

Given the choice, I’d personally go for GP7. More rugged. Wider view. Stabilisation gives more option with regards to what to support it on. Housing on top of a housing means a good mic could be attached properly. I love that combo with a good shotgun. However, with the problems we chatted about the other night, I’m still thinking another GP5 to replace my older one in case it gives ul the ghost, before they stop being sold! The other option that you brought up is even better. For the same price you could have two GP5’s for a new kosher one or three for a GP7. I reckon Osmo 2 might be a big improvement. Trouble is, curiousity supplies the drive for a GP7 in case it’s drastically better than a 5.

Alright Ian. Yes, I'd go along with what you've just said about the GP options. My only problem is that I've been thinking again :) I'd seen someone using the Pocket properly more like ENG or doc shooting, basically not vlogging or action. The footage was awesome and reminded me of a proper full sized video camera. If I were looking for an ultra portable camera that'd fit in my pocket and basically do what my AX100 does but without requiring a back pack and tripod etc. I think this is where the Pocket could actual excel. While the Pocket is less appealing than any GP for self vlogging shots due to its much narrower FOV. I think it could rebalance the equation by being an excellent main camera for the ENG, doc type shots. Given that it also has the potential for external mics, for which I'd obviously build a couple of nanos. It'd potentially be amazing with the Clippy lavs and also the option for a cardioid, reporter or shotgun mic. The only problem is that DJI haven't released the interface yet and as we both know, just because a camera has a mic input it doesn't mean it's gonna be good, Yi 4K+ And the Pocket's whole audio system is gonna have to be quite special if it's to compete with the GP5, 6 and 7 when they're used with the their interface. In any event, I wouldn't make a decision for a GP7 or Pocket until the Pocket's 3.5mm interface has been released. Plus by that time we may see improvements with both the GP7 and Pocket through software updates. Cheers, Dave.

@@TheGameThing That's great David. Thanks for replying. I look forward to your discoveries and mods video. Put up against the RodeLink, it fairs great. Especially at the price. @@DavidHarry Oh, sorry David. I meant to say that I was looking for a suitable adaptor for the likes of the Clippy Lav mic, that will fit the Fifine K037 mini xlr connector. I thought I found one, but it has a screw in fit instead of female Jack input! Doh! :)

Hi. That's the exact one that I'm finding difficult to find as well. I've put one together myself by using the mini XLR from the mic that came with the K037 and attaching a 3.5mm female socket to the end and I've then put a 3.5mm jack plug on the end of the original mic. But I need to be able to find a ready made one before I do the video as I need to be able a simple solution for those without soldering experience as well as those who are able to do the modification to the boards on the transmitter and receiver. Can you solder? Cheers, Dave.
