I usually do a complete wheel swap on my vehicle's. I dislike the chrome plating and how it comes off.

Wow. This is a pretty clever way of doing it! My main issue with doing "diecast" bases is, you break the tabs, and... you've broken the tabs. With this, the metal sleeve can be affixed to the diecast base, wheels still free-wheeling. I also like the use of original rods, as I've likewise HATED the tutorials where they say to crimp the ends of homemade axles with pliers, as it looked like crap.

A cotton swab soaked in alcohol will also remove the wheel plating as well.

you can use acetone to remove the chrome on some wheels, i did this method before and it worked great.

This works as well! Just be careful as it’s much much stronger than rubbing alcohol

So the soldering iron tip will flange the metal and secure it to the body?

Yes the Tube is 1/16". The only ways I can cut the tube is with the Official K&S tube cutters or using a rotary/dremel cutting tool.

All wheel chrome on hot wheels is weak.

Any chance anybody is familiar with older Hot Wheels, particularly the Sand Witch from 1969? I had two which I had repainted as a young child, so now I thought I would give them a proper paint job finally. I have pulled them apart in preparation to strip the paint. I managed to remove three of the four axles intact with the wheels on, just a slight bend to correct, but the fourth axle I managed to break in half attempting to liberate it from its long held home. So, even if I decide not to replace the other three 'good' axles, I still have one that is in need of repair by replacement. I attempted to remove the remaining axle from each of the now separated wheels, and I noticed something after failing to push the axle completely through wheel. It appears as though the end of each axle is embedded inside of the wheel, as though it may be a two piece wheel, where you would slide the inner piece over the axle, then crimp the end of the axle before sliding the outer part (tire and hub) over the first piece. That is the only explanation I have imagined thus far that would explain what I am experiencing. Does anyone know if this is the case, and if so, is there a trick to getting the two-piece wheel apart to remove it from the axle???

Got it! I took some pliers and just squeeze the tire together from the outer edge that makes contact with the road, towards the center of the wheel where the axle is. I squeeze a couple times, rotated the wheel around 90°, and squeeze a couple more times, rotating again, and after a few times the two halves just popped apart. The newer wheels that come on the mainline vehicles are not designed in this two-piece fashion, are they?
