One of the biggest dangers for older people is falling and breaking a bone. This can quickly send someone down a slippery slope of no return. All the more reason for resistance training into old age.🏋🏻♂️

Thats true my grandfather fell and broke his thigh bone. It took 6 months to heal and had to sit in a wheelchair. By then he had lost so much muscle mass that he couldn't walk any more.

Absolutely. My dad competed in powerlifting in the 70's and 80's. He's 71 now, still lifts as best he can and he's built like a tank. The old fart still coaches wrestling and can show moves pretty well. If he didn't train like he does he wouldn't be in as great of shape especially for his age.

Boom. Love it. As a PT I use this all the time with patients. It also works for flexibility. I always get “I’m so inflexible I could’ve never been a dancer/ballerina/etc.” my response: “no. You’re inflexible because you’re not a dancer, etc….”

That was me. Diagnosed at 40 with osteoporosis. Put on fosomax. Felt terrible. Doctor said I was getting old! In my 40’s! Stopped fosomax. Started lifting. Bone density greatly improved. I’m going on 67 and the strongest and healthiest I’ve ever been. Not on any prescription meds.

Could also be someone who did heavy manual labour for a living or did sports on the side without lifting and already had a good foundation built at a young age. I'd bet that's the case. If he was working in an office or was sedentary his younger years I doubt he'd have been able

Just to add on, power training (sprints, plyometrics, or band assisted jumps for older individuals.) Is also another great way to retain type ii muscle fibers and bone density

That was me. At 63 squating 400+ for reps. Bones as strong as steel, until 40 + years of powerlifting caused disc herniations and I was partially paralyzed. You don't have to train like that to have strong bones. Rotation of movements and higher rep ranges , say 15 or 20 will do about the same. Don't be me. My wife who is 120 lbs is now stronger than me and I have aged many years in a few months. If your taking advice from someone who's selling something it's not for your benefit.

Many people who train with heavy weights do so with the goal of emulating their favourite strength athletes/bodybuilders, and that’s a totally reasonable and great reason to lift. Me? I want to be like this guy. Whenever anyone asks me why I lift, I say “it’s my retirement plan”.

This is encouraging, but I’d really like to know if his bone density score was normal when he was below 55 when he started lifting or was osteopeniac and he was still able to bring it up so much. Many online sources seem to suggest that you can’t reverse bone density loss (not by much at least) but can only slow it down with resistance training.

I mean that one is really dependent on the individual's severity of mobility and how compromised their movement patterns are. It is really difficult climbing out of an immobile body in chronic pain, speaking from experience.

Here’s the only issue I have with this. When bones become too dense you can have something called osteopetrosis not to be confused with osteoporosis is a condition in which your bones are too dense

My only question with this is how heavy you would have to lift in order to promote the increased bone density? As I get older I have started to go down in weight and increase the reps instead. The injury risk goes down and it is easier on the body. Are there any studies on what kind of weights are needed for the density benefits?

Life goals! LOL. I started weightlifting seriously at 38 years of age. I'm now 40. With my more strict diet, I've never looked better. I started squatting at 40 lbs. Now I'm at 110 lbs, about to jump to 120 lbs, possibly next week. I'm 145 lbs, so getting to 100% of my body weight is definitely a goal! :D

My thoughts exactly. Testosterone alone will increase bone density but if unusually high exogenous dosages (typical of trt) are involved that help him gain strength then that will also indirectly affect the density.

I started bodybuilding training again at 45, I'm 48 now and have put on around 45lb in solid muscle with accompanying fat loss. In the first year I put on around 20lb, by the second year I was around 35lb heavier. In the 3rd year I began TRT (low dose Testosterone 150mg per week) and I'm around 45+lb heavier muscle mass wise and still growing and getting stronger! You are never too late to start, I feared that 45 was too old but NO it certainly wasn't. Don't keep putting it off, start training TODAY!

Add in some Vitamin D3 and K2. Supplemental calcium in older males increases cardiovascular risk.
