I think this is a great idea. I’ve already got two old cordless drills that battery packs are done and not replaceable. I’m now going to hunt down a third. I’ll check with my electrician friend about power as you’ve shown. I worked a number of years in my engineering life doing geotechnical work with some geology involvement. Creating those polished samples is very useful, especially for concrete analysis and testing. Good job !

I use windshield wiper motors which are cheap, plentiful, hi-torq, low-voltage, and designed to work under heavy loads for ridiculous lengths of time. The scrapyard has an endless supply of them, virtually for free.

probably designed to run that hot. thumler tumblers use a motor that reaches thermal equilibrium. if its under 160 f ur good to go. after 160 most electronics begin to degrade barring weaker exceptions but if its continuous duty anything under 160 is actually normal. no stink no problem! great video btw. loved it

I know this video been out for a while but hopefully you will still get this brother. I wanted to ask how you run the polishing cups? Specifically what is doing the polishing like from your prepolish to finish polish obviously the leather alone cant reasonably polish hard stones above maybe a 4 on the moh's scale right. Thought it'd have to work if I us my diamond faceting and lapidary polishing compounds maybe with some sewing machine oil right. Thanks for your time if you get this and great content keep it up. Love to see more of your finished work. Haven't went through all your videos so not sure yet if you haven't already put all that up but if not I know I'm not alone that MANY people would love to see that! But yeah best to you and yours brother have a good one.

Very cool project. Are you making your own cups? Do you have videos detailing that process/materials?

Thanks for posting this. Found this looking for a video from Austria that I saw several years ago of a water turbine ball mill run on a a river. Worked basically like a grist mill with stones with grooves in them. I have several septarium nodules and a few mammoth teeth I'd like to attempt turning spheres from. Think I'll try your idea, seams pretty straight forward. One question I have is are you running all three at the same speed? Seemed like one was turning slower. Wasn't sure if that's intentional or not.

Wasn’t intentional to run them at different speeds I never thought about it. I just assumed they would turn at similar speeds. The initial shaping of the cubes is the time consuming part of making spheres.

Do the stones have to be sorta round to begin with?

Yes you need to preform with a number of cuts. This is a good video explaining the process. kzitem.info/news/bejne/sJ9tyZdpm5Sap5g

How did you make the wooden cups with leather?
@ajwingnut

The wood polishing cups were made from a wood dowel with a counter sunk bolt in the center for the shaft. The dowel center was shaped to a concave surface and leather was glued to it. The hole saws I purchased on ebay.
