@jsedge2473

I'll second what someone else said and say Amazon. The prices of some things on Amazon are just as cheap as craigslist and such in my city. Weight plates and dumbbells especially. You can get both of those on Amazon for ABOUT $1/lb, maybe a little more, but still multiple times less cheap than elsewhere. They're not going to be as pretty, but you're picking up pieces of metal and putting them back down, so prettiness isn't exactly critical. Things like clamps you'll find for $10 on Amazon instead of $50. Loadable dumbells I got for $30 each instead of the $250 or $300 they'd be from rogue. As for some other things, like bars, and I know people might hate Titan, but their cheap bar is like 100 bucks and it is identical to any bar I've ever used in commercial gyms. Just like the amazon weights, it ain't pretty but it does what it's supposed to do. It all comes down to what you want and how much money you want to spend honestly. But you can definitely build a "cheap" home gym.

I'm in the same boat. I had a unicorn gym membership special that was like 100/year but I barely used it. Also the pandemic closed the closest 24hr Fitness near me so it became even more of a hassle to go to the gym. Then I built a home gym that's cost close to now $3000. It'll take me 35 years before I recoup the cost in comparison to the membership but I'm using it close to everyday and I'm actually getting back into shape. The drive to upgrade and get new equipment is like a fun obsession/hobby. Home gyms for life!

Just the opinion of a random viewer. First - set of bands, decent adjustable bench, chin-up bar, set of adjustable dumbbells, maybe some flooring - probably going to be more like 1,500 though. Second - barbell, squat rack with high low pulley, weight plates, weight storage and more flooring - probably going to be 1,500 again. Third - based on what you want based on how you like working out - an inspire FTX functional trainer will do a ton for you, with more flooring. Again, will be more like $1,500-$2,000. So that would be $5k in 3 years - maybe you can finance some of these to stretch out the cost a bit. Alternatively, if you find them used - maybe you can squeeze them into your $1k a year budget. After those items are purchased - you got all the basics down- you can figure out if you like specialty bars and other more specific or more premium equipment.

Fun fact: If you’re considering trying to do adjustable dumbbell handles and rogue’s dumbbell bumpers to try and save some money, you’re not going to unless you only need one dumbbell at the higher weight. To get two pairs of the dumbbell bumpers general ends out costing more than just get a straight up pair of fixed dumbbells of a corresponding weight.

I’m 90% certain I’m getting the Titan Fitness functional trainer for the 64” width vs the Ares 47”-ish width so that I can do proper crossovers, though! For plates, I feel like I’m an outlier as I like plates that are 25 lbs and higher to have handles to make them easier to carry. Anyway, I gotta run as my stall mat order is ready for pickup. More exactly, I drag them because I can’t lift 100 lb mats , at least not for long. That’s why I’m exercising. Once I can carry stall mats around no problem , I’ve won the workout game!

I would like to add……if you get a Titan x3 rack………..the quality seems great to me. I am someone who knows how to weld……and while they are not the best welds ever, they are functional and look fine. No way anybody is going to wreck that x-3 no matter how much they can lift. The issue is if you get a flat foot version Titan says their last pull down doesn’t work with the flat foot. I might get it anyway and mod it to work.

I got the pull down working on my flat foot. That was one of my best purchases. I messed up an only bought the 10 in rack extension to mount the pulldown in. I think there is room to fit in an erg or air bike without breaking the budget, or cutting back on something and buying a manual treadmill. My home gym cost me just under $5k all in. I don't have dumbbells or a functional trainer, I got my plates used, and I also own an erg. If I were to add anything I would get something like the ironmaster plate loaded dumbbells (mainly due to storage space concerns), an air bike, and potentially add the dual Athena or Ares to my rack all of which combined would bring me right up around that $10k mark.

Thanks for all the videos, I'm in the process of building a garage gym, but being in Europe the options are a bit limited - no REP, for instance, but Rogue are present, so mostly looking there Serious question - what makes one barbell better than the other? Why is a Rogue bar better than a budget bar? I can imagine finish, bearings, durability, etc., but in actual use, does it make much difference? I could get 2x good budget bars for the price of 1 Ohio Powerbar Stainless, which would make workouts that bit easier to organise
@GlucksGym

That's a lot of factors like quality of material, durability (is your bar rated 100k drops or was it really tested at all?), machining quality, how good is the finish (often the easiest difference to spot) and so on. I could go on but on general there is a big difference but it also depends on what your budget bar is. There's some decent budget stuff out there and some raffle gear high end stuff. American Barbell makes some incredible bars as do others.

I'd always get Nuobells (adjustable dumbbells) over fixed dumbbells. Just as good (better in my opinion even... they are smaller, better knurling, just... great). Powerblocks are good as well though. I personally don't care for a lot of fixed dumbbells, neither do I have any weight plates in my gym and never will. It's not necessary and I just really don't like it, I prefer a more clean & functional setup, rather than just filling up on "crap". Of course it depends on your prefered way of working out, but yea... just not for me to have the "classic" homegym with lots of dumbbels, weight plates, barbells etc. A functional trainer is a must & the Ares is a beauty. Also, TRX needs way more love. One more thing, when you talk bands my friend, yes.. natural latex of course, but the difference maker is, that it is layered latex, which makes it a lot better (like Undersuns bands).

Powerblocks and Ironmasters, while not perfect, will last a lifetime. Nuobells rely on plastic nubs to move the weight shafts which will wear out and when (not if) they do the only fix is a new handle. This guy did a teardown: kzitem.info/news/bejne/t39px6CCb5tpnXY

Also, Powerblock uses plastic for the pin and lots of other things uses plastic, there are different ways of making plastic. In any case, I'll take Nuobells over crap like Ironmasters any day and I'll rather buy 5 pairs of Nuobells than 1 pair of Ironmaster.

@@Sommitps I don't know where you are getting that. It is a real Nuobell and he had to break it open to see what was wrong, that's the point, it's not serviceable. Broken handles are common enough that Nuobell has a video on how to replace them. And yes Powerblocks have plastic pins but they don't wear out with normal use (mine are ten years old). And if they do break you can get replacements for $10. Nuobell replacement handle is $179. It's too bad because it's an otherwise slick design that solves most of the issues people have with Powerblocks.

@@Sommitps Well that's good because you'll probably need five sets of Nuobells, or more, to last as long as one set of Ironmasters. To each their own. You have not provided evidence that it's not a Nuobell or any evidence that Nuobell does not use plastic cam followers. There are plenty of reports of broken handles just as described in the video. Nuobell does not exactly stand behind their product with only a two year warranty. I see no reason to doubt the video. Maybe I'm wrong. But again, you haven't provided anything other than a simple denial.

I'm kinda late to the show. But for collars, buy some Ivanko COC's and be done, they work on all bars, yes even those 1.9"bars and who doesn't want to touch their COC everytime they lift? They make the COT's as well which also work for all bars, are measured in pounds and cheaper, but you know....the COC thing. I have all three sets they make and always reach for my big COC collars when lifting.Yes they are expensive, and yes they weight 2.5kg each, but if you cant add 11 pounds to your plate math, just buy a tonal and these things are not for you anyway.

I bought adjustable dumbbells up to 100 pounds for 1$ a pound in 2019. Best investment I've ever made. Some people don't like having to adjust them, but to be honest, if you're in the gym to workout and throwing weights on and off barbells and dumbbells bothers you, you're kinda lazy.

I'm not sure that's exactly why some people prefer fixed dumbbells and other options. Some of the appeal is the speed of drop sets for example or if you're like us and have 4 people working out at once we can be using 4 different dumbbells.

@@GlucksGym Just what most of them cost :-). For clarity, and n the name of science, though, let's say two brutes sneak in while you're off cavorting at BOS, and they take EVERYTHING, except one flat and one adjustable bench of your choice,. They also leave the lighting and the A/C and heating, and to avoid an international manhunt, Wynie's belt. Beyond that, it's all gone, we're talking even the wall control. But for whatever reason, they leave a pile of cash equal to the MSRP of all the benches they took, and that's your budget. How do you rebuild?

I love my Ironmaster dumbbells. They are built like tanks and can can weigh as much as 165Lbs if you're built like a Gorilla. I personally just bought the base set and the 125lb expansion set. I have iron hex headed dumbbells for 5lbs through 35 lbs for curls and stuff. And I leave my ironmasters at 60lbs and never go lower than that. Other options are Baadass dumbbells and the Pepin dumbbells. I would love a set of 5-100s. But I can't spend 5,000. And I don't have the room. So iron adjustables are where I think the sweet spot is. Paying 800$ for plastic Nuobells just doesn't interest me. I want to be able to use and abuse my dumbbells for the next 30 years.

Technically my gym is broken into 3 spaces. The Rep section (with the PR 5000 and Ares) is 16 5' long and 11' deep but the length can easily be shrunk as I'm using 30" crossmembers (63" total) between the rack and Ares. @@GlucksGym Yeah, Originally I thought they would do well but they have been quiet. Their equipment seems high quality but their prices IMO lost business for them. Now Bells of Steel is in the top 4 so Fringesport is going backwards fast. I absolutely love my Midas Bar though. So they have a rack now, that is good, I did not know that. That is a start, I hope they are not charging ROGUE prices for it. I came across a Major Lutie power rack 3x3, 1 inch holes, strap safeties, and J hooks, with 11 gauge steel for less than $700. That makes rack buying interesting

They are also my favorite option for 10 lb and under Olympic steel plates that I use for my EZ curl bar and loadable dumbbells. Im glad u omitted the TITAN racks for budget as I do believe the quality isnt there. For power bars, maybe the ISF powerbar might also be a good option and for the adjustable dumbbells perhaps the BAADASS (maybe you could do a review on those someday) might work well as they are "indestructible" unlike the Nuobell.

Technically the Hydra rack is a clone, as in its an exact copy of an actual 3"x3" vs a metric (2.95") and the hole spacing matches Rogue's whereas metric racks end up being off about a millimeter.
