I grew up riding dirt bikes and used these tricks all the time. As an adult, my Yamaha mt09 (850 triple cylinder) had a dead battery and I thought "no biggie, I'll bump start it. time to put that dirt bike knowledge to good use". I learned it's WAY harder to push start a bigger engine than the dirt bikes I was used to. After 30 minutes of pushing a 400+ lbs bike up and down a hill without any success I decided to go buy a trickle charger lol. I think all my neighbors enjoyed watching me run around though

I think that most of the problem with newer, bigger bikes is the fuel pumps and injection and ecus that need power to work. My 1998 FZS600 is pretty easy to bump start, just have it in 2nd and drop the clutch, jumping on the seat if more traction is needed.

One tip I realised far too late - Also use the electric starter at the same time as bumping. Even if the battery is so dead it won't turn over the engine by itself, every little helps.

Two things I want to add, First, second is always better. I had an old cruiser that I was bump starting and put it in first and it broke the gear. Second, when doing the “tug” I have always had the back person step on the strap instead of hooking it to their peg. When they want to release they just let go. I’ve seen too many people eat dirt because the person in front kept going

Back in the early 90's, at a little private track about 1/2hr south of Grand Rapids, Front end high on a 3rd gear, uphill, blind 40 foot double. I pulled in the clutch to hit the rear brake at the apex of the arc, and stalled the motor while 20 feet in the air. Wind blowing through my helmet sounded so soothing. Bumped started it on the back side of the landing jump, and rode away. I love happy endings. :)

Thank you for the video! I've been dirtbiking on forest trails mostly, for a little over 10 years. I've only bumpstarted once, and it was a happy accident after I stalled after reaching the top of a hill, and then went downhill. I didn't quite understand the mechanics of it, but I knew it was a thing, and I have been wondering what the specifics of it were that allowed it to happen. This'll definitely help me now I know how it's properly done.

Easier way is to put your bike In neutral, this will make it easier to push the bike if you have to run with it or you don’t have a big hill, Once the bike is in neutral and is rolling down the hill hold the clutch in and shift to 1( if you don’t have a lot of speed, but harder to start), and 2( if you have a decent bit of speed) once in desired gear, before you dump the clutch you want to jump on your bike and a second before land on your seat. dump the clutch. ( once you hear the bike start it will be going slow so pull in the clutch fast.

what about rear wheel on rear wheel starting if both bikes have a kickstand (with no ignition cut off switch) or you have terrain to get both rear wheels in the air touching each other spin up with the running bike and then let then clutch in on the running and clutch out on other bike or using the mentioned strap as a pull starter like on a lawnmower wrap the strap around the rear but dont attach it anywhere with your pull line going out at the bottom on most bikes get it in 2nd and just pull on the strap
