My mother was a government school teacher posted in Gonsainganj area ,there they have this cluster of villages where chikankari is still traditional occupation catering majorly to Chhangamal and nearby ganj market ,however profit margins are very skewed in favour of retail (handmade labour for a metre of cloth is usually around 250₹)…it’s even hurtful that discrepancies in quality and cost are a blow to the repute as well as economy of this industry!

Labels need to write "imitation chikankari" because the people understand chikankari to be handwork for which a premium is paid as they know craftsmen and women are involved in the process of creating the design on the clothing piece. Even if you don't know what chikankari is, you would still expect it to be a premium product linked to craftsmen and women. I'm glad Manisha made this video and others on this topic. She's great at giving you the whole picture so beautifully.

If you’re a seasoned embroiderer you know fake work from real. But it’s difficult for the inexperienced eye to distinguish between machine work and chikankari. It’s pretty shady of Biba to sell hakoba as Chikan. The lady is absolutely right about the quality of work. Even, fine work done slowly is very different from hastily done sparse work.

Here's to all visual learners who visit this video and wish it was summarised : Title: How to Buy Authentic Chikankari Introduction: The speaker was shocked to discover major brands, like Biba, selling fake Chikankari. This prompted them to visit Lucknow to learn how to differentiate between real and fake Chikankari. What is Chikankari? Chikankari is a renowned Indian embroidery, originating from Persia during the Mughal period. Described as "poetry on fabric," it's closely associated with Lucknow and holds a Geographical Indication (GI) tag for authenticity. How Chikankari is Made: Authentic Chikankari involves a meticulous process, including block printing, embroidery, washing at the Dhobi Ghat, and finishing. It's done on high-quality natural fabrics like cotton, chanderi, silk, or their blends. Machine embroidery, on the other hand, is faster and cheaper but lacks authenticity. Signs of Authenticity: Real Chikankari exhibits loose threads and knots at the back, showing human involvement. It's crafted on high-quality fabrics that feel luxurious and elegant, avoiding rough or cheap appearances. Authentic pieces showcase a variety of stitches and motifs, inspired by local elements and featuring intricate designs. Embellishments like Mukaish work are common in real Chikankari, while fake copies often use inferior materials or fake embellishments. Beware of Scams: Some shopkeepers may attempt to sell unfinished or machine-made Chikankari as authentic. Online, fake stores may display stolen images of real Chikankari but deliver machine-made pieces of inferior quality. Conclusion: Quality should be prioritized over quantity when purchasing Chikankari. Investing in one authentic piece is preferable to buying multiple cheap copies. Thank you Manisha !!! I dont own a real piece yet. Soon one day !

No one can fool me for real chikan-kari. Murri work is my pet. I assure you, real chikankari is worth the price. It's not like the prices are herculean, you can buy lesser motifs, a sparsely done kurta etc n still look well embellished. While I love wearing chikan Kari kurtas so much, the fake work or even the regular machine or handmade Dhaga work other than chikan never amuses me because they can't bring up the exclusivity with white thread on white cloth or green thread on green cloth... chikan Kari is like creating a cloth on a cloth... like a self designed cloth.

Thank you Manisha for this. As an embroiderer, this is extremely valuable information that needs to get out there. That embroidery is stunning. The scammers are getting more and more adept at faking quality goods. I would much rather buy quality item direct from the artisan, then through an Internet website. Having a blog would be wonderful so we know where we can go to the direct source and support the artisans directly. Just like when Karl documented, the fake cashmere and pashmina shawls. People need to be aware of this, and not support fake or scamming. In Jordan queen, Rania has all over the country textile collectives run by women. They can go there. They make these wonderful Jordanian embroideries that are sold to the tourist market directly and they’re controlled and regulated and you know what you’re buying is supporting these women in these co-ops. I wonder if India has such groups?
