One other thing that I believe she didn’t mention is that not all sellers guarantee live arrival. So, make sure to ask. I have run into this problem before. Almost all breeders promise their animals health, but if something was to happen during shipping and the reptile was to die, they may not want responsibility for that.

Rachel Fenton It’s most likely in shed, it should be perfectly fine, you can’t really have it stop until it’s done shedding. If you have a lamp on the screen, I would affix it to a wall or something nearby, hover it over the screen lid so the snake doesn’t get too close to it.

Be careful when buying online everyone, there are most definitely scams out there! I just recently had an experience with a scam myself when I was attempting to purchase a beardie. When I started to get suspicious from some odd phrases he used in text, I tried having a vocal conversation. From the short interaction we had I could tell it was bad news.

I've only bought a few reptiles from Faunaclassifieds so far and every seller called me on the phone before the sales were finalized to tell me about the particular snakes/lizards I was buying (personalities and such) and to make sure I knew how to care for them. I'd be suspicious, too, if they acted sketchy.

Nope, I didn't lose a cent, thanks to my faith and intuition. He had amazing photos of the animal, and I couldn't find them on other websites, so it very well may have been a real animal, but my gut told me I was never going to see it. A few things struck me as odd: 1 The name on the advertisement, the name on his PayPal, and his supposed given name were three different names, one being a woman's. 2 He was very eager to get my money when we hadn't even set a shipping day, discussed the price, or gone over any other details. 3 He said things like, "make sure you take really good care of him", but was very unenthusiastic/not forthcoming when I asked for more information on the beardie, such as things he liked to eat/activities he enjoyed (it was a rehoming). 3 He didn't discuss the price at all with me in the beginning, and it ended up being $100 more than advertised. Then he was very quick to accept the original price when he thought I might back out. I generally only deal with reputable breeders or people I know personally, this would have been the first time I'd stepped out of that zone. I'm glad I didn't!

Just bought my second ever snake, online just like my first one and I’d had her enclosure and food ready for a month because I had planned on buying one at the NARBC Tinley show and she arrived dead. Which should not happen, but I contacted the seller immediately upon opening her and sent pictures and a video and they called me about 15 minutes later and set up a new snake to be delivered. The seller did nothing wrong, the heat packs were still warm she was well padded and she was kept indoors at the shipping facility until I came to get her. So freak things happen, but your seller should be attentive to any issues you have within reason, as long as you let them know quickly and within reasonable doubt that it wasn’t your fault it died.

I did my first morph market buy of a snake and it was a great experience. I had multiple email communication with the breeder and read reviews. I did take a chance and sent the money friends and family to the breeder ,but the breeder lives in a town only 2 hours away from me. So over night shipping only cost me $25. FedEx delivered the snake to me the next day at 8:30 in the morning.

I bought my hognose off Morph Market. The seller was very nice and ready to answer any questions we had (Ectotherm Empire). Always ask questions, great sellers will be more than ready to help you. I got my boy from a breeder who just didn't want to continue with his line, so now he's our cozy three year-old pet. Don't forget to quarantine your new babies from your collection until you know your new babies are healthy and mite-free.

Along the lines of looking up reviews, also look up the breeders social media’s. My general rule when buying online is if they aren’t a long time well-respected and well known breeder (think the kind who have published books on snake care) and/or they don’t have active social media presence, I typically will not purchase from them. ESPECIALLY if it’s a newer breeder with little-to-no reviews, if they don’t advertise themselves with some online presence then I assume they aren’t very serious about selling online.

I love your channel I have watched a bit before Rex came in, and I love how much work you put into your animals! I’m a 11 year old boy who loves herping, and my mom and dad let me have reptiles! We recently got a Mangrove snake, 3 baby female Veiled Chameleons, and an Adult California Kingsnake. We have multiple snakes, a few turtles, an iguana, and 4 lizards. I love spending time with them and just hanging out with them, and playing ROBLOX while letting my Cali King crawl all over me. You are the main reason that got me into reptiles, and me and my mom would mow the grass a lot and find these Dekay’s Brown Snakes. I also have a cute baby hognose named Snoot, and she is a wild type juvenile. She is adorable! I also have a white Snake Discovery Hoodie and am currently wearing your green hognose shirt “Drama Queen”! I love your shirts and want to by some of your snakes in the future, and would love to meet you! I hope you know that thousands of people watch you and love your show, and to all your hard work! Stay socially distanced but not distance to all your fans! I love you and your channel!

This might be specific since I'm not from the US and, being from Germany, haven't bothered into researching sellers from overseas (as much as I'd love to have a Snake Discovery original. But we got good breeders, too, and it doesn't seem right to me to make a reptile go through international shipping just for the label). And that brings me to the most important point, in my opinion. the animal's health and safety come first. Most hobby breeders here have their own websites with pictures of the animals they have, breed, sale, and the enclosures, and a list of requirements for potential buyers. Many also have detailed guides about the recommended enclosures, light, temperatures, humidity, advice on feeding, background info of the type of animal you want to buy (I say animal because these are not only my experiences with my two snakes but also with birds, hamsters, and dogs.). Basically, when browsing the website shows that the breeder cares more about finding a good home for their animals than about the money and that they are absolutely willing to turn potential customers away when they have a bad feeling, that's a good sign. Most hobby breeders I've bookmarked also offer you information about the animal you buy - birth/hatch date, feeding schedule, what they eat by the time you pick it up, shed history If you ask questions (friendly and respectfully), I also pay attention to the tone - are they polite even if I don't inquire about their more expensive animals? I don't expect somersaults, fireworks, and a parade in my honour, especially not when I buy a classic corn snake but I also don't find it trustworthy when a seller treats reasonable communication as if it's a big inconvenience. The offer to be available with help and advice after the purchase (within reason, of course) is also important to me. One thing that's mandatory for me, be it a hobby or professional breeder, is the possibility of picking up and having a look at their collection. Might again be a cultural thing but I have yet to meet a hobby breeder with a good reputation and love for their animals who isn't enthusiastic about proudly showing off their enclosures/cages/animals. So, if a breeder doesn't offer it, I'm already suspicious, and if they refuse, it's a big red flag for me. Even if I don't plan to pick up the animal myself, the option should be available. Finally, listen to the reviews, read especially those below four stars (in general, with everything, I noticed that 3-star reviews are usually the most helpful because people tend to explain what was okay and what wasn't. 1 and 5 star reviews are often just one sentence/word and not helpful). If certain points of criticism show up repeatedly, make up your mind if that's a dealbreaker for you (I can live with slow shipping and communication, using a default picture for a type of animal instead of the animal for sale is so-so, depends on whether I buy a below 100,- Euro snake or a 2000,- Euro snake. Rude communication, deflection, refusing to refund a deliver of thawed mice after 20+ Euro extra shipping were paid for guaranteed frozen delivery are dealbreakers for me.) I can say, every time I followed my own guideline, I've been absolutely happy and satisfied with the purchase every time, over two decades. Even made friends with some breeders during my bird days (anecdote: One wrote me once an exasperated email, she had a rainbow budgie and if I wanted him, I could have him for the price of a normal, because she just had argued with a potential buyer she didn't trust at all for many reasons and now she just wanted to know that the bird finds a good home. Another anecdote: The evening before I picked up my first corn, a three-hour drive away, the heating bulb died after just a few days of testing. The pet stores were already closed. I texted the breeder to explain my problem and what to do, she said no problem, and sold me a bulb + lamp for a symbolic price.) One time I didn't follow my own advice. I was grieving the loss of my first corn (escaped, turned up five weeks later), tipsy, couldn't stand the sight of the empty enclosure, and bought a snake from a professional breeder. I ignored a dozen of red flags, mostly for a dumb reason: he's got an informative reptile channel on youtube, so how alarming could those flags really be. Very. Wanting to know things like hatch date, shed schedule, how often and what the snakes he sells eat is considered "dumb questions." The snake himself is healthy and turned out to be a darling, but not thanks to him. It wasn't scared or cautious when it arrived, it was terrified of any human presence in the same room. Frozen mice arrived thawed, no ice in the package, and wrapped in a newspaper. Specifications for another item I ordered and where shipped in a different box were ignored, and the package (of the items, not the snake, fortunately, that was shipped separately) was torn and is it didn't have any padding or wrapping and the dirt from the cork bark I bought landed on my floor. Yeah, I know, this turned into a rant. Conclusion: Look up as much information about a breeder as you can, be it reviews or provided by them. Prioritize a breeder's love and care for their animals over prices, morphs, and youtube fame (side note: if they have a youtube channel, watch closely how they act over and treat hatchlings and compare it to other breeders on youtube. It also gives you a hint. I'm also not going to name that one breeder). If you do all that and end up with a vaguely bad gut feeling - do not buy.

Awesome video! Part of my vetting process was looking at their reviews on morphmarket and checking out their Instagram/Facebook accounts so I can see other pictures of their snakes and how they were kept and made sure the breeders were legitimate. I bought an adult Milksnake with the suspicion that he probably wasn’t breeding but I was fine with it because I didn’t intend on breeding him! He was still young though, he’s 4 years old. 🙃 that’s what I was more aiming for anyway, a still young but adult milk snake.

I've loved snakes since I was little. My best friend had a bloodred corn snake named Charlie and a ball python named Skeeter and we'd always handle them. I lived with my grandparents and my grandma is deathly afraid of snakes so I could never have one of my own. Fast forward to now. I'm 31 and married. My husband has always been wary of snakes. I guess he just never really had a chance to interact with them. But he's been watching your channel a lot lately and has begun hinting at the possibility of getting our own scaley child in the future. Thank you so much for all these educational and fun videos! Hi guys! I want to make a quick note about your suggestions for Paypal payments (I know, I'm well over a year late to this party but I only just found your channel!) I would suggest never using "Friends and Family" when purchasing a product from someone, as it not only doesn't protect the buyer, but it also doesn't protect the seller! It is also against Paypal's terms of service to accept personal payments for the transfer of goods, and doing this could potentially get the seller into a lot of trouble. Using the F&F option also doesn't guarantee that the seller will be avoiding any fees, either. Thanks so much for all the incredibly educational content you produce, and I hope you and yours are doing well!

I had a question about transporting reptiles long distances like moving or buying at a far from home expo what the best way to do that?
@reptilerant173

Cecilia Caplinger Place them in a pillow case. Then place the pillow case in a plastic bin. If the trip is going to be over one or multiple nights you can put bedding, a cage, and a water dish in a plastic bin with a heat pad hooked up to a thermostat and transport them in that.

All my mail goes to a po box at a post office What would they do about animals?
@contra1124

Animal sellers might not ship to po boxes at all. At least I've never seen any that did

You can get them shipped to a FedEx hub and just pick them up.

Don't know if you'll see this since it's an old video, but since you talk with your hands a lot, do you often get bit when handling? I'm asking because I also talk with my hands

Check morph market or faunasclassified, just research the breeder before buying. Avoid BHB, underground reptiles, LLL, backwater reptiles, snakes at sunset, and cb reptiles. Generally it’s best to support smaller-scale hobbyist breeders rather than large scale ones

Paypal will flag accounts with too many payments received via Friends and Family also, it's generally not a good idea to do payments that way.

Here's a thing about Paypal. If you're in say, Canada, and the seller is in the US, and you do the Friends and Family option in Paypal, the money sender is going to get charged a fee to send that money. Some US friends were doing a 'donation' for an irl friend of mine, for running an event we were all apart of, but because the collector was in the states, even if i sent $5, i was going to get charged about $5 to send the money. It seems like a flat fee, but the Money Sender is still fined if they aren't in the same country.

Oof the PayPal “Friends and Family vs Goods and Services” choice for me once. The vendor (who I had worked with before and trusted) never sent my product and PayPal couldn’t do anything about it

‘v’ One day I’ll be ordering a Scaleless, but not for a few years...However, I DID order and have received my new baby High White Reverse Okeetee Tessera corn snake as of this last Wednesday! If Emily and Ed ever get around to a fan enclosure review episode, I’ll have to make sure the little guy is in my submission photo/short clip XD

I would love to get a captive-bred dekay brown snake, but they're hard to find, or taken from the wild. any advice?

Johnny J. Captive breed dekays are very rare since babies usually refuse to eat in captivity. If you will, unfortunately, most likely have to get a wild caught.

@@reptilerant173 thank you for your info. I really wish I don't have to take them out of the wild and affect the natural population, even if they're "plentiful" and "not of ecological concern" .
