Hey, great videos, quite informational! You’ve stated in a couple videos you must buy whole shares and cannot purchase fractions of one which is true for the most part. With a Robinhood account they do have an option to do just that (purchase fractions of a share), unfortunately I too am a Canadian citizen and Robin Hood is American only :/

Great video once again, Adrian. Quick question, how do you divide your portfolio? For example, 1. How to decide what % of your portfolio should go to Growth vs Dividend stocks? 2. What % should go to ETF vs individual stock? 3. Considering, you have multiple ETFs, what % should go into each ETFs? Also, how much % should go into each individual stock?
@CanadianTShirt
4 жыл бұрын
This is a huge topic and I'll be making multiple videos discussing this but the annoying answer is that, it depends on a lot of things. It depends on your age, your risk tolerance, your tax bracket, whether you have contribution room left in your TFSA or RRSP and your overall strategy. Overall, diversification is key! So you should always be invested heavily in ETFs but also it's good to double down on dividend stocks which have great potential. For me right now, I am focusing more heavily on dividend stocks but once my TFSA and RRSP and fully maxed out, I will start investing in growth stocks since they are very tax efficient in a non-registered account. I'll go over all of these details in an upcoming video =)

Thank you for the step by step instructions. I use Questrade frequently but will refer your video to anyone who asks me about the process of buying and selling using Questrade. One small comment, the ETF you bought wasn't commission-free, you still paid the ECN fees. Those fees can be avoided too if you added liquidity to the market. That is one time when a LIMIT order might be handy. However, I presume you didn't mention it so as to not confuse the viewers with too many jargons.
@CanadianTShirt
4 жыл бұрын
You are absolutely right! The ECN fees are truly tiny: only $0.0035 per share so unless you buy hundreds or thousands of shares, they are essentially negligible. But I would much rather pay a few pennies in ECN fees than pay $10 commission fees with another broker. Good catch buddy! =)
@Veeetz
4 жыл бұрын
Just watched this video, it was a great summation of how to use Questrade (also my brokerage since 2012). Also note, ECN fees are both charged when buying and selling ETFs and individual stocks too, even when using limit orders (and yes, I'm aware they can be avoided by adding liquidity, but as Adrian wrote, those fees are negligible and I simply look at them as a reasonable trade-off). p.s. Adrian, I see you're a Giallorosso fan (ie. your t-shirt), personally I've alway been a bianconero myself; but don't worry, I'll still watch your videos. ;)

Great new/old video lol! Freshened it up I see. How can you make your TFSA have more room in it if you are saving a large portion of your income and thus hitting your limit with only say 25% of the money you are trying to invest is their a way to make more room in the TFSA somehow? and if not what do you suggest for other accounts to have investments inside of?
@CanadianTShirt
4 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, there is no way to accelerate your TFSA contribution room.. Everyone gains TFSA room at the same rate (currently 6k every year) I'll be making a whole video on how to invest once you max out your TFSA and RRSP but unless you have children, then you are essentially out of tax-sheltered options and then it's time to start investing in a non-registered account (Questrade calls it "margin" account). I'll go over the tax implications of that in an upcoming video =)

If you're buying 5000 shares at once (penny stocks) then CIBC might actually be cheaper due to the ECN fees which only ever matter for large volumes like you say. I personally never buy penny stocks so for me, ECN fees are always less than 50 cents or so, plus Questrade has no commission on ETFs. For me, Questrade is definitely my favourite option but as you say, for large volumes CIBC might be a better choice

Hey David! With the lockdown and especially since it's the new year and everyone has investing / tax questions I expect that the phone lines are super long for all of the brokers, including Questrade. Personally I never call them, I use their instant messaging service directly through Questrade. The longest I've ever had to wait is 40 minutes but you can continue doing whatever you want on your computer while you're waiting. Transferring a TFSA from one bank into Questrade will always take about 3 weeks, I talk about that in this video on how to Transfer to Questrade: kzitem.info/news/bejne/o5xn4Kmch56ChqA If you just want to put money into Questrade from your bank account, it will literally only take one day! If you follow the steps here on how to Fund your Questrade account: kzitem.info/news/bejne/1qWFqIaLkmp6i4Y You'll see that the money will arrive in my Questrade account by the next business day. Hi Adrian. I'm sorry to hear about your recent troubles with KZitem. I hope it gets sorted out soon because I sincerely wish your channel to prosper and get monetized. I have learned a great deal from you and your videos and I think it can help so many people. I am currently looking for stable company stocks that yield at least 5% annual dividends (preferably paying out monthly), that have low DRIP requirements (around $500) for my kids' RESP... particularly since we contribute a much lower amount into RESP than TFSA. I hope you can recommend some. Thanks!

Thank you for those kind words, I really appreciate your support 🙏 Check out my past video on the best Canadian dividend stocks to buy on discount during this market crash: kzitem.info/news/bejne/0o-tzoCZbJ15fXo All of these pay out high dividends and low DRIP requirements, Telus has an extremely low DRIP requirement right now. @@CanadianTShirt Hi Adrian. Are you active on other social media (like FB Messenger, for instance)? I'd love to show you the strategies I came up with. 😊 The very first stock I invested in for TFSA is PLZ.UN.TO and I bought a considerable amount. I just realized that since it has a very low DRIP requirement, I should have reserved it for RESP instead... or as "filler" (For example, an RESP contribution was maximized at $2,500 and received $500 government grant. If I spent $2,500 to make a DRIP on a more expensive stock, I can put in the remaining $500 on PLZ.UN.TO and still make its DRIP requirement).
@CanadianTShirt
4 жыл бұрын
@@a.sangrador112 I totally get it! I also own Plaza REIT and you're right, they pay an amazing monthly dividend with a very low DRIP amount but remember, diversification is the most important thing, much more important than getting a DRIP. Even though I love PLZ.UN, please don't put ALL of your RESP money in this one stock... your children will need this money soon and you can't afford to put all of your eggs in one basket. But if you want to put the $500 from the government grant into Plaza and then invest your $2500 contribution in other stocks and ETFs, that is a great strategy! =)

How is that ... ? Does wealthsimple has a fee or no ?

WealthSimple is the new kid on the block, so until two years ago Questrade was the cheapest by far. Now WealthSimple charges no fees but ONLY for Canadian stocks. I'm set up for the long term already, but as there is going to be a lot of volatility over the next several months, I've set aside a small amount to invest contrary to the market. Can you explain a little bit about the Open P&L and % P&L columns are? Are they the rate of return for each stock? Thank you so much for your videos! They're so great for beginners and thank you for dedicating so much time in answering all your comments. :)
@CanadianTShirt
3 жыл бұрын
You mean when you're in your Positions tab and looking at each stock row by row? The Open P&L is the dollar amount of profit or loss that your stock is at that current moment in time. So if you bought $1000 worth of Apple stock (book value) but it's now worth $1500 (market value) you have earned a hypothetical profit of $500 or an Open P&L of $500. That means if you chose to sell your Apple stocks right now, you would have made a $500 profit =)
@CanadianTShirt
3 жыл бұрын
The % P&L is the exact same thing but it's a percentage of your investment. So if you had a $500 Open P&L and your book value of Apple was $1000, your % P&L would be 50% since your stocks have gone up 50% in value =)

@CanadianTShirt
3 жыл бұрын
You are absolutely correct! If you're sitting on a large pile of cash and wondering if you should wait for a dip or go all-in at once. Instead, you should spread out your investment over the course of weeks or months to take advantage of dollar cost averaging! That way if the prices do fall, you can take advantage of that discount then. Or if the prices continue to rise, at least you've been buying them as they rise rather than sitting on cash which is just losing you value due to inflation. I hope that helps! =)
