Hi Chris I'm enjoying both your newsletter and your videos. Your delivery style on the videos is enjoyable, with no over-excited hype and a relaxed voice, and you are easy to follow. After leaving it behind many years ago, I'm trying to relearn the trumpet. However, I've found that returning is much harder than I thought. I thought I could pick up the horn and take up where I left off... My trumpet teacher years ago taught me using the Arban method. Right now, I've entirely lost my embouchure and my tonguing is thick, imprecise, and nowhere near as fast as when I was younger. I've been going at it for several weeks now on my original mouthpiece, a 10 3/4 CW Bach, but I'm just blowing air... I also had a 7C non-Bach mouthpiece in the case, and I can get sound on the lower end of the staff with that. I'm forcing things to get a middle G on the staff right now. I learned a BIG lesson from you today....more air, pushing the air harder produces buzz. Until today I have been tightening my lips (which are thin) and pulling the horn harder on my mouth. Your suggestions on buzzing WORKED for me.. I've been doing some buzzing today on the 7C..and we'll see what happens when I try the shallower mouthpiece with a wide rim. I've rambled a bit in this note but I thought you might be interested in the background of one of your fans. Dennis Mellersh

Chris I was told by a trumpet teacher if your away from the horn maybe sick I have a bad cough Not Covid but the teacher said to always start out with lip buzzing & m.p. buzzing it will bring you up to speed after being off the horn when you have been sick.

My son is really interested in playing the trumpet but he’s only four and a half. We were told a cornet is lighter and easier to play and we also found a company called PInstruments that make real plastic instruments for kids. So we got him a plastic cornet and he was able to get a buzz sound in it right when we first gave it to him! He’s still not sure how to hold it or get that sound consistently though. Can we follow your videos for learning how to play his cornet? Should we keep letting him try? I feel bad keeping him from trying if he’s really passionate about it (and he seems to be) but if it’s not safe or anything I don’t want to keep letting him. Thank you!

Let him play! This is wonderful! Follow my videos? After a point, yes, but there are so many gaps here on KZitem (at least on my channel). I would highly recommend finding him a local teacher. Thanks for your comment, Laura! I hope to be able to help along the way. 😊

It’s totally safe, there’s no danger to playing an element other than building stronger lungs lol. Learning an instrument from as young as four is not only the best age to start but will help with development. They’ll learn to overcome challenges and find value on hard work, as well as self expression through the art of music. Ask any instrumentalist and they’ll say they wish they’d started learning as young as possible.

Sometimes when I play high notes a buzzing comes out of the side of my pipes where the mouthpiece doesn’t cover when I play high notes. I’ve had this problem for a while and it’s so frustrating. People say that I have to keep my lips firm and all that and I try but it just doesn’t work. I need something that can help I’ve tried so much but it just doesn’t stop and it’s very frustrating. I want to play loud strong high notes but it’s just not there.

Hi Christina! If buzzing is coming out of your pipes then do you have a leak? Have your instrument checked for leaks. Let me know what comes of it. Do you have the same issue if you play a different trumpet? Keep me posted!

@ChrisDavisTrumpet
Жыл бұрын
No, it isn’t. That suggests you may be playing with your throat closed. Keep your throat open, as if you’re going to take a huge bite from an apple.

How do you use stomach air? not chest its hard for me to switch over.
@ChrisDavisTrumpet
3 жыл бұрын
It's not really stomach air. That's something we say to paint a picture to hopefully get a player to support the sound. Think of your support coming from the bottom up to the top. Air and Wind is the foundation of everything to come.

Buzzing?? Whatever for?? Why not just play the instrument? The instrument is making the sound. Not the lips. The lips vibrate because of the instrument. Try to blow a tone in the instrument. Continue to play whhile you pick the instrument off the mouthpiece, and both sound and buzzing stops, but the air still flows through the mouthpiece. How would you teach an organ pipe to buzz? Or - why??
