In this video, I will go through an example of how to calculate the fuel, time, and distance to climb and specifically how to determine your top of climb.
Determining the distance it takes to reach your top of climb allows you to adjust your checkpoints so that you have a checkpoint directly at the distance of your top of climb. This allows calculations to be much easier and it also is great for flying! While flying, you will know that once you reach this checkpoint... you should be at the top of your climb (or cruise altitude).
In order to use the fuel, time, and distance to climb chart you will need the takeoff airport elevation in terms of pressure altitude, the expected altimeter setting at takeoff, the takeoff airport temperature, the cruise altitude, and the temperature at cruise altitude. Your cruise altitude should already be known (especially if you are following my cross-country checklist), your cruise temperature you can gather from winds aloft data (see aviationweather.org), and your takeoff airport temperature can be found using a TAF or local area forecast.
You can then get your takeoff airport elevation from the AFD / Chart supplement but you need to convert this to a pressure altitude before you use it on the fuel, time, and distance to climb chart. To do this, use the equation Pressure Altitude = Elevation + 1000*(29.92 - Altimeter Setting).
Once you have your elevation in terms of pressure altitude you are ready to use the fuel, time, and distance to climb chart from your AFM or POH. In order to find the fuel, time, and distance to climb from your takeoff airport to your cruise altitude you must perform 3 steps.
#1: Use the fuel, time, and distance to climb chart to find the values of fuel/time/distance at your takeoff airport pressure altitude and your takeoff airport temperature.
#2: Repeat step one with your cruise altitude and cruise temperature.
#3: Find the difference between all the values in step 1 and step 2 by subtracting the fuel from step 1 from the fuel from step 2, the time from step 1 from the time from step 2, and the distance from step 1 from the distance from step 2.
This will give you the fuel, time, and distance it will take to climb from your takeoff airport to your cruise altitude. Now, with this distance value, you will be able to move one of your checkpoints to be the same distance from your takeoff airport such that this checkpoint will be your top of climb checkpoint. You can use the fuel value for your climb fuel or you can wait to calculate the fuel for each checkpoint in your climb phase. Do not use the time value hear. Wait until you compute a ground speed to determine time.
