I am trying to perform a preliminary design of a temporary cantilever sheet pile wall in sand for a dewatering problem. Is it appropriate to utilize the pore water pressures computed in this manner, and lateral earth pressures as well (determined utilizing the effective stresses that can be computed with depth along the front and back face of the sheet pile wall) to develop a pressure diagram for the sheet pile wall? It seems that that could be used then to determine sheet pile size and embedment depth to satisfy force and moment equilibrium.

The method shown in this video to calculate the pore water pressure and effective stress is the most accurate method and is used by various american authors. The parameters obtained from the flow net can be used for the design of cantilever sheet pile wall but I would recommend you to get some expert advice before performing the preliminary design.

Why Nf is 5.5 exaclty? Can it be 5.4? How can you calculate it? Thanks!

Actually when you draw flow net on a paper you choose a scale and you have take measurements from the flow net like no. of flow channels and potential drops according to scale

@@MasterCivilEngineering yes exactly. However, sometimes my teacher gives us the flow net and wants us to obtain same values you calculate. In his answers sheet, he calculate Nf=4.7 for one example and i dont know how. There are other numbers of channels on craig's soil mechanics book with decimals as well. Thanks for the quick answer sir!

Your teacher would have used the same method by using the scale to find the dimensions from the paper. Better is to clarify with your teacher

In the next video on Flow be I will be showing how to use the scale in flow net for finding the unknown dimensions
