First postion Qc7- i like this move very much because it Stops opponent from castle so he has to play a move like h3. additional function of this move is to stop Bf4 So he can't exchange his bad bishop Re8- controlling the only open file putting pressure on e2 Bg4 -its a active move which pins the knight against queen but after f3 i have to move the bishop again Be6- is also a tempo move but intuitionally i dont want to undouble my pawn because e6 might become a weakness in the future.. So i would like to play Qc7 from my candidate moves.

Great series. Thank you so much. 1) Re8, Qe7, Bg4, Nd7 (that I would not put it in the list). I would play Bg4. 2) Qb6, Rc8, Bxd3, Bg4, Ng6. I would play Bxd3 for the following reasons: - Exchange my bad bishop with the my opponent's good one. - Free the very nice f5 for my knight that will help also to open the diagonal for my f8 bishop and accordingly help to castle kingside.

Nice video, i'm a 1900ish player trying vaguely to improve :) ok I spent 10 mins on first position and made a few notes. Potential moves moving left to right, Knight Nd7, Bishop has either d7, e6 , f5 or g4. queen moves Qc7 , e7 or Qb6. Rook Re8. Pawn moves c5 , b6 or b5. From this the two canditates I mainly like are 1..,.Qc7 and Be6. With 1...,Qc7 im preventing 2.0-0 and 2.Bf4 which is likely how white wants to continue, White can try to play 2.g3 to try and play 3.Bf4 next but that seems really bad due to weak light squares, 2...,Bg4 for example there. 1...,Be6 is a tempo move also, but I can play that later if i want. If after 1...,Be6 2.Bxe6 fxe6 we have corrected our pawns and have probably improved slightly but our position does not seem terribly dynamic either. 2.Bd3 from white would probably transpose back to the Qc7 line. As for other moves 1...Re1 feels too routine and Lazy, not achieving much, no pawn moves really attract me just now either, c5 maybe eventually but it feels a bit rushed straight away. Therefore I think i'd play 1...,Qc7 expecting something like 2.h3 , Be6 3. Bd3 (id be happy to see 3.Bxe6) 3...,Nd7 4.0-0 , and now perhaps 4...,c5 (or maybe even centralise the rooks first. Black feels a little better co-ordinated with a small edge?

Position 1: Logical Moves: Kh8(premature), Re8, Qc7,Qb6 * Qa5(less active than Qc7) Be6, Bf5 & Bg4(exchange is better due to Qb3), Bg4, Nd7(blocks the bisho), c5, b5(may be idea to Bb7 but weakens c6) Good Moves: Re8(develops rook, prevents Nf4), Qc7(prevets castling and prevents exchange of good bishop), Be6(forcing move, development, exchange weak bishop and improve pawn structure), (attack center when white king is not castled), c5(attack center and makes space for Nc6) My decision: Qc7 is better than other moves as it postpones castling so white need to do something and other moves are still the options and after c5 white has no ability to convert to equal endgame
@Glicerol
4 жыл бұрын
Position 2: Candidates: Bg6, Bd3, Bg4, Be4(e4 after exchange is too vulnerable), Qd7(too slow), Qb6(active but b7 is too weak so white can just exchange bishop, Rc8 Good Moves:Bg6(does not develop anything but provokes opening file), Bg4(provokes h3 and pins the kn9ight), Rc8 Decision: Rc8 (threat Bd3 & Nb4->Nc2) so white has to react like a3. exchange of bishops improves our knight. After a3 I would play probably Bg4 with Ne5 and pressurize d4, Be7 and castle.

Thank you very much! I’m new to your videos but I like your idea of scanning the pieces one by one to find candidate moves. As you say it’s impractical to do it in every situation but this can help me find moves I might miss. Long term training this way I believe intuition will filter out most moves that make no sense. This will definitely help me improve

First position: Re8 puts pressure on the nite on e2 and pins it as well as putting pressure on a potential Be3 from white. Bg4 also pins the nite on e2. The only quick way to get out of that pin for white seems to be f3 or Qc2. f3 seems bad for white because that might endanger his king after O-O. Qc7 gives white time to play Ng3, which i don't want. Nd7 blocks in the bishop, so I'm ruling that out as well as Na6, because that allows white to Bxa6 and after bxa6 my pawn structure is bad. It seems that Bf5 sort of blocks a diagonal that the white bishop from c4 might want to get to so that's also a candidate. I would probably play Bg4 hoping to provoke h3 or f3. both of these would weaken white's king side defense. If h3 I would retreat Bh5 keeping the pin.

I've tried to use this method for many years (I'm a long-time player around 2000) but in the middle of the games, I tend to go back to my old, faulty "single-move" calculations where I focus on one move until I'm either satisfied or I've refuted it. That leads to a lot of missed opportunities! First exercise looks very familiar! Candidates are Re8, Qc7, Nbd7, Bf5, Bg4, f5 (to allow the knight to get to f6). I'd probably play Qc7 to prevent O-O and Bf4, then Nbd7 followed by f5, Nf6, Re8. 2nd position: Bxd3, Qb6, Rc8, Bg4. I think black has to castle before doing anything else here and the simplest solution is Bxd3 followed by Nf5 (or Ng6), Be7, O-O.

Holy fk! I searched "how to calculate chess" into the KZitem search, and after wasting 1hr watching the more popular channels and baited by a few titles, all of which basically amounted to a bunch of chess "masters" talking AT their audience (no explaining) to "calculate deeper" (gee... thx), or "look at how well/how-deep I can calculate" (gee... thx) I finally landed on this video which lays out the process, spends 3 mins providing a clear over-view of what calculating consists of, what this intro video will cover within that broad topic, what the series aims to accomplish, AND introduces its first technique. Thank you! I can tell by this video your series on the topic will be worth the time AND that you respect your audience's time rather than rack up views.

At 22:47 about candidates moves in the 1st POSITION i could say : Re8, Knd7, Bg5 or Bf5 or Be6 other pieces like the Queen or the Bd6 shouldn't be moved twice according to chess principles in the opening, according to my understanding of the position i will play Bg4 (without to check with a computer) why ? because the rook is in the center if white play f3 it will weaken the white king. even with f3 we can imagine the Queen could go on h4 later because the white knight is not on f3 so the king is really weak in fact. even Knd7 who should be tempting because it developp the worst piece of back pieces it will block the activity of the Bd7 so it is not the best move. Black needs to play very active and very quickly on the white king.

I really wish this was the first chess video I ever watched. It would have saved me a lot of wasted time. I know what you're trying to do is teach calculation, but what you're doing even more is teaching logical play. You're showing how every move you make should have an idea behind it, within the context of what you know about the game overall. You move your knight here because here it's doing 3 different things and your opponent has to respond with a move that wasn't his first choice. I started out learning tactics and puzzles and got pretty good at them, but it didn't translate to many more rating points. I moved on to learning "positional" concepts. I learned why it's better to have a bishop outside the pawn chain, why it's better to place your rooks on open files. And while I often found myself with the edge in the middle game, I still lost many games that all my learning told me I should have won. This video showed me how to really look at each piece on the board and maximize their effectiveness. Now those positional and tactical concepts are really paying off because I understand when it's better to move a rook to an open file, and when it's better to move a bishop outside the pawn chain. This opens up more tactics, and it leads to more wins. I'm no longer hyperfocusing on a single idea and wasting time on inefficient moves. Now I'm converting early advantages like leads in development and space. Liked, subscribed, and I'll share this first with any fellow chess player who asks me how to get better.

Do you find any value in doing the scanning method to come up with possible candidate moves your opponent might make? Or would that be untenable as far as time? Many teachers will say the first thing you should do is examine possible threats by your opponent before choosing your own candidate moves, but I also find it daunting time-wise to go through all my own possible candidate moves and then my opponent’s candidate moves. Suddenly I could be spending 10 minutes on each turn just trying to weed through all that.
@nyme1019

Exercise one First list: Re8, Qc7, Bg4, Nd7, Qe8, Qe7 Second list: Re8, Qc7, Nd7 I selected Qc7 because it would put pressure on the h2 pawn. If black castles in that position Bxh2 would be a big problem so black would have to react to it in some way giving me time to play one of the other candidate moves Exercise 2 1st list: Bxd3 and Nb4 I couldn't really find any other candidate moves for me. The move i selected was Nb4 because it puts more pressure on the d3 Bishop. After this I cannot find any good moves for black except for Bxf5 after this I could play Nxf5 improving the position of my Knight and opening my dark squared Bishop and Queen.

For the first exercice, I narrowed my list to: Re8, Qc7 and Bg4 But I think playing: Qc7 first is more reasonable, because you move with tempo and then follow up with Re8 or Bg4 For the second exercice I had an obsession with pawn on d4 so I considered Qb6, Bxd3 followed by Nf5, Rc8
i am a chess coach also, this is not a method I generally teach but it is great training tool to help players slow down and work hard on identifying all their options before diving into analyzing the potion

This is rather "how to select candidate moves", and a lot of them for that matter. Just scanning and searching for moves is how I started playing chess long ago. But eventually I switched to first understanding the strategical elements in the position (imbalances mainly) and only then looking for moves that fit my plan. This way you can easily slim down the candidates to about 3-4 usually. Looking around for almost random moves by all the pieces seems a bit redundant to me.

You’d be better off cutting your videos into parts. Ie 5 min. videos. This allows for busy parents to have time to view and know where they’re at. 🤗

You cant play chess thinking of all the moves that all the pieces can make. Waste of time even if you're not playing rapid chess. Only a Computer can do this
