Bouganvillea plants actually grow well in Africa...Africa has the best weather for these plants..in Zimbabwe where l stay most houses have that plant..actually l planted two pink ones 2 weeks back.....on the sides of my gate..they didn't take long to establish.......i prefer training them to stand alone as shrubs than climbing..cause I think that has been overdone...however you have to give them lots of attention to make sure they take up the shape you want....before planting them, I placed lots of compost ..especially compost from rotten banana stems....banana stems make good compost...my experience, African weather is so good so much so that you do not need to add a lot of these manufactured fertilizers or chemicals...watering watering, effective pruning is all you need to do....

Love your videos on Bougainvillas. A couple of years ago I took cuttings from a red Bougainvilla. 2 of the cuttings I planted next to each other and one has red bracts, the same as the mother plant, and the other is magenta! You wouldn’t believe they’d both come from the same plant! Has that ever happened to you?

Hi Nell, thank you for this vid - great amount of information! I love Bougainvillea, but here in Berlin, Germany the spring and summer seasons are too short and not warm enough for Bougainvillea putting out ample bloom. We may maintain them in containers, but the plant will probably not start flowering until mid-July. By the way, I have adopted your habit of composting my plants (using worm castings) instead of fertilizing them with synthetic fertilizers. And my plants are happy and healthy - and so am I. Thanx for that inspiration. I look forward to more of your videos. All the best to you in Tucson, Az! (I loved my time in Az - it's a beautiful state!) Marc

Hi Marc - I visited Berlin about 7 years ago & loved it. Here's a post (an old one!) that I did on the Berlin Botanic Garden which you might enjoy: www.joyusgarden.com/the-glass-pavillions-at-the-berlin-botanic-garden/ Bougainvilleas like lots of sun & heat so Berlin isn't their ideal climate. Composting & worm composting has always worked for me. It's a natural way to make the plant stronger, which we want. Enjoy the warmer weather! Nell

Hi Nell, you sound like you had a great time in Berlin. Yeah, the Berlin Botanical Garden is fantastic. I love it, too, and I regularly go there in all seasons of year. And I also find the glass houses impressive. I love the koi fish in the big house and the overwhelming variety of plants from all over the world. Thank you for your videos and expertise. You have a very handsome way of presenting your videos. I love seeing your videos and hearing you talk about your plants. You have a warm-hearted and loving way of talking about plants and your garden. You seem to be a committed gardener and lover of plants. Best wishes and, please, carry on. Marc

Great video to welcome in our summer in the Sonoran desert. I really enjoyed watching, as always. Let me just point out that I'm pretty sure I will not be pruning my bougainvillea in bikini or speedo in this life LOL -I had a good laugh at that. My B. 'glabra' is doing lovely on my east facing patio and gets just about 6 hours of sun this time of year in Gilbert. I usually prune very light, once a month (or longer) after flowering. I live in apartment, so my gardening is limited to containers. But let me tell you what is happening, majesty palm, Areca palm and Parlour palm all accent my bougainvillea and can all take cold and heat I would have never known until I tried here in Gilbert. This plant palette allows my desire for a sense of place, similar to Mediterranean climate, in the Sonoran Desert. That is what I love to do with plants. Looking forward to the next video :) -alandon Joe

Wonder info on this plant. Iam new to this beautiful plant. I discovered it upon visiting my local Willow Nursery here in central California. This flower bush was so eye catching covering over their sign at the front street. I ask front desk about it and surprisingly they carry the same plant in 1 gallon container for $13.00 (I purchased it automatically). I can’t wait until it branches off and expand many flowers.

I have a small potted bougainvillea that bloomed well in the spring. Now in the mid summer, all the leaves started turning bright yellow and then all the leaves dried up without falling off. The soil is water soaked near the roots. Could you tell me what went wrong with my bougainvillea and how can I save it from dieing?

I've tried to plant a BV twice in my SW desert garden and both do the exact same (bizarre) thing: they completely "die off over 6 - 9 months, and just when I get ready to toss them and start over, they leaf out. The one I put in 5 years ago is still the 15" thing it was when it was planted and did the "die off" thing twice before it finally took. The second one looks like its going the same route. I'm wanting a bush, not a tabletop plant. This is a frost free location' and both get full desert sun 80% of the day. Are these bad cultivars? (both were bought at Home Depot).

Could you please let us know which companion plants would be good for them. On Houzz someone said to never water them and do not have drip near their roots. Also to plant in bad soil with no amendments or compost or else they won't bloom. They also said it had to have full sun. Is that from sunup to sundown? Thank you for this video. They are great!

Hi Cynthia - You're welcome! I've planted quite a few plants around bougies although none with extensive root systems. They don't like to have their roots disturbed.
