Great info! Not many know how to prevent wrinkles on leather belts and keep it well nourished and properly maintained. I just bought a Hugo Boss leather belt and this info comes handy! It would be nice if the background music volume of this video is lowered a bit! Thank Doug - keep up the good work!

in general, when you buy a new natural leather belt, does it need to be hydrated, or after a certain period of wear?

Hi, great video! I have a black leather belt that I conditioned and polished and afterward it tends to get dull or smudged from finger marks in handling the belt. Sorta like what happens with leather shoes when you handle them, and then they need a light buffing with a horsehair brush or tight weave cloth. Have you found this to be the case in your experience in handling belts after you have conditioned and polished (and brushed) them? Thanks!

Thanks. I'm a woman who loves nice classic leather belts so this is helpful. Question: I have some vintage ones and they are a bit dried out (thrifted). Is it ever a good idea to treat the back side of the belt with a leather conditioner? I obvioualy don't want to damage my clothing when I wear them.
@CreativeRestorations

+Maroulio you can condition them (including the back side) using a product called “Bick 4”. But, I would let them thoroughly dry for a day or two before wearing them - just to be safe.

How do I clean a belt that’s stinky from sweat? Will soapy water do?
@CreativeRestorations

Use water and Fiebing's Saddle Soap. Let it air-dry. Repeat. And then, follow it up with Bick-4 conditioner. Should work well.

If leather belts get wet then the dye from them can stain your trousers and even seep through to stain your shirt underneath. That happened to me due to wearing leather belts in very hot leather and sweating a lot. It can also happen if the belt gets wet if you are out in heavy rain.

It isn't unusual for manufacturers to use water based dyes on their belts. Personally, I think this is a cheap way of making them. But, this can also be attributed to countries or states changing their EPA standards. LOTS of leather companies have been forced to switch over to inferior products all for the sake of perceived environmental gains.

@@CreativeRestorations I conditioned my belt on both sides with boot wax which contained beeswax and oil and that might have been why the dye leaked out of the belt. You are supposed to condition a leather belt from time to time. Also a lot of leather items leave dye stains on fabric especially brown leather for some reason. Maybe the dyes used to make brown leather are not as stable as black leather dyes. Years ago I had a problem with so.e brown Clark's shoes. When it rained the dye soaked through onto my socks and feet.

Ive lost a lot of weight over the couple of years (60 lbs). Is it ok to cut the end of the belt (creating new holes), or just buy another belt? Yes, I'm trying to be cheap, lol.

1st, congrats on the weight loss! My best advice.... Keep the weight off and reward your efforts with a nice, properly fitting belt. Ditch the old one.

Take it to your local cobbler and have them shorten it on the buckle side, keeping the end with the holes intact. Should be an easy and inexpensive fix. Congrats on the weight loss!

@@vladimirkefalov8832 I did just that with a beautiful thrifted belt that was too big. I was charged $13 and the belt was ruined as the cobbler could not do it properly. I did get the $13 refunded but I left him the belt as it was unwearable.
