What do you think about the furminator and undercoat rakes?
@GoGroomer
5 жыл бұрын
@@mayrod7077 I was hoping someone would ask this question my friend! I'm going to be brutally honest with my answer and just know that I do not like to criticize or invoke strong opinions about other professionals...with that said, here is my answer. I strongly believe tools such as the FURminator and undercoat rakes damage the coat and upset the undercoat to top coat ratio over all. Meaning, by using these types of tools on a double coat tends to remove more coat than what nature intended. Resulting in a damaged coat the same as if you shaved a double coated breed. Does that make sense? LoL, sometimes it's hard for me to express myself in words. May Rod, what is your opinion on these types of tools?

@@GoGroomer I thank you for your honesty. I am new to grooming and I have not been able really make my mind up with those two tools. Sometimes, they seem to be helpful but I don't know if they are more helpful to the groomer or to the dog.

@@mayrod7077 Thank you for giving your ideas on this subject. Welcome to the grooming industry, it truly is a wonderful place to be! When I was new to grooming I found these tools to be timesavers and used them often. Then as client dogs returned for future grooming I noticed changes in their coat so I did a lot of research on this very subject. I found these tools to be the culprit of some skin and coat issues. By doing that research I also learned that the best techniques and tools for maintaining a double coated breed are the tools and procedures I demonstrated in this video. In addition to that, using a slicker brush to brush the dog in the tub (while soaped up) is extremely EFFECTIVE! The hair that is ready to come out willingly lets go with ease! I hope this helps you in your future grooming endeavors and never hesitate to reach out to me for advice! I want to help:)

I have a Barbado da Terceira, a rare breed from Portugal. They have a gorgeous double coat. I was NOT prepared to know how to care for it at all, so once she was old enough to have her adult coat, she got matted and had to be shaved once. Since then I have always combed her out with a comb, but it takes so long. Now I am going into breeding, so soon will have three of these dogs to keep groomed. I really appreciate your video. It is extremely helpful. I was looking into buying professional clippers, but after seeing your video I understand that what I need to invest in is the force dryer and the products you mention. I grew up in the tropics however I now reside in Coastal Carolina where it can get quite hot... I've been shearing my double-coated Australian cattle dogs in summer for years but my girlfriend recently said many sources online say it's harmful... this sounds like a giant load of horse crap to me because my animals look fantastic and their athletic performance and cool down is radically improved in extreme heat the moment I take their hair off. If you brush them vigorously for a few days before you get out the Clippers it comes off pretty easy.

Thank you, but it would be nice to see how you deal with a coat that has already been shaved and what can be done to restore it (or at least maintain it). Some people may have recently adopted a double coated breed that had been shaven several times before they had him. It would also be great to hear how you deal with double coated dogs like the Bouvier des Flanders, that do not shed it's undercoat.

Good Morning from Canada. I just LOVE your videos! Thank you so much for all this great information you give us viewers, it's GREATLY APPRECIATED! I commented I think last week about my 2 Mini Aussies. I am guilty of getting them trimmed down. Not really short, I took off about 1 inch of length on them. I feel it's easier to manage. Especially with all that's going on these days. I care for both my elderly parents at home and work full time as a caregiver in a large facility. I do need to take more time for my fur babies and brush them out more often. I bought a force dryer to make the drying time faster and easier on bath days. a grooming arm, and waiting for my new Wahl Bravura for sanitary trim... and I have my Andis AGC 2 speed. I like my Andis but I feel it's too big when I do paws and sanitary trim....I do want to get a grooming table next. They are all sold out right now. So I am using a small folding table for now but it's not very sturdy. They will be brushing them again and I will de-shed them this weekend. Happy grooming! Thanks again for all your great information, love watching your channel!

I don't like them clipped, but I'm wondering if I could keep them in a medium length? I've never seen one like this, only fully clipped or full length coat. I'm a 1st time tt owner. Could you make a video on recommended dog grooming tubs for people willing to invest to build a washing station at home. I want to bath my large 110lbs dog at home but only have a shower in a tiny bathroom and my back doesn't agree at all with the extremely bent over position . It also cost 300$ every few months to bring my dog to the groomer which is fine I know my dog coat is an intensive jobs that take all day and my dog is not easy to handle. But having an appointment with him can sometimes be difficult and if the appointment is cancel for some reason than it's another month+waiting. Also during the pandemic with everything shut down and my dog was so miserable and dirty for months it made me realize I really need a way to be able to bath him at home when I need, that would be safe for me and him. But the amount of tub available online is just overwhelming and most have good and bad reviews + what parts and stuff are needed. I don't know where to start 😵

Thank you so much for explaining so thoroughly about the mystery that is the double coat! This topic is a battlefield on the Aussie Shepherd Facebook groups - to clip/shave (yikes!) or not (obviously). I've been doing my own grooming for a while but I have a question. Before I started doing it myself, the last time I took my Mini Aussie Shepherd to a groomer, she removed all the undercoat and he looked really skinny. 😔 When the undercoat grew back, there are now a few places around his legs that are now fluffy, as if there is no top coat. I've been told it could take a couple years for the top to grow back. Is this true? Or is he just doomed to have what looks like funny looking fluffy angel wings? 😅 Thank you so very much, I just love your channel!

You have taught me how to groom my schnauzer, thank you! However, this pup is something else. Don't I need to do her paws and sanitary areas the same as my tiny dog? Also, what about her face? Forn20myears I used nothing but a regular hair brush on my huskies. The boy I have now I have pampered horribly because he landed in my lap right after my husky passed and he was my best friend. Now this little baby, 2 now, I wanted to go all out and use fancy stuff. I bought a rake and used it. The whole time I heard the hair pull and break but my boy didn't seem to care. So I did hos entire body. Then I sat in my yard and just liked at this rake. I put it to my mom beard and I felt like I just tortured my dog. I ended up with a boar bristle brush, slicker brush, and one of those steel combs. Now I wonder is it possible to repair nourish or do something possitive to his guard hair that can somewhat undo what o Did? I studied other rakes at the pet store and it seemed like they had the curbed teeth sharpened. Mine felt like it was just metal. Also, I use head and shoulders on mine and this guy will require bathing often. Will this shampoo hurt his skin? Dog shampoos don't do anything for huskies at least not the ones I used years ago. Head and sholders you can see the dirt roll off like mud.

You can definitely damage the undercoat by improperly using a rake! If you don't have experience using it, don't use it. You only need a slicker brush and comb. You want to line brush when brushing. Absolutely do not use human shampoo on dogs!!! Dog shampoo has a different PH level than human shampoo. You want a good quality professional shampoo. Shampoos at your local Walmart will not work! I highly recommend you to go through Amy's videos, and watch her videos about Shampoos.

Hi! Thanks for your video 😀! What do you think about Pomeranian Boo trim?
@GoGroomer
5 жыл бұрын
I may be wrong as far as what the Pomeranian boo trim is, but I think it's much like a lion trim? (let me know if I'm correct) My opinion on that is this...it is adorable and allows for a much more manageable coat on the dog however, the Pomeranian is a double coated breed and I discourage pet owners to cut into that coat because it damages the ratio (top coat-to-undercoat). With that said as we all know a dogs undercoat regulates body temperature as well as protects the skin from sun, weather and allergens..etc. For that reason I am against trimming the coat of any double coated breed. (I know we still need to trim around the sanitary areas for cleanliness-that would be my only suggestion for cutting into the coat of a Pomeranian) Remember my friend...caring for a double coat is simply "working the undercoat". I'm curious about your opinion, please share that here:)

Thank you so much! Sorry for my English, I write with google translator😀! Yes, you are right. It is the same. But the owners of the dog are asked short trim. What length is better to leave so as not to damage the undercoat? And can I use attachment comb for clipper?

@@СаулеШабдалина What country do you live in? I am so excited that we can connect across the world! Thank you for being an important part of this:) What is your 1st language? I can try to upload my videos with translation for you:) I would love to try and do that-if it helps you. (sometimes it's hard for me to express myself in words). I want to help:) It would be best if you could talk clients out of trimming a double coated dog and talk them into working the coat as I demonstrated in this video. This would preserve the skin and coat health of their beloved pet. Remember, the coat protects the dog from temperature, sun and allergens. Cutting into the undercoat will always damage it:(

Thank you for such an informative video. My problem hasn't been addressed yet .(I don't think) I have a long coated Shiloh Shepherd who swam all summer in the river. I seldom blew his coat out, mostly towel dried or air dried. As a consequence, the area around his anus and scrotum have developed dreadlocks that are next to impossible to brush out. I was wondering what you would do in this case....cut them out? I ordered some of spray to try, but I am afraid that it is too bad to attempt. Help!
