What pick ups do you guys like to use? Here in Indiana we typically use Kix and Puffs and we can only use one hook chow is the universal bait in most lakes? Just curious how the Carolinas do it as you know these fish in paylakes have seen it all its good to always have something no one else is doing.

Honest question, never been to a pay-lake, but I've caught carp before. As you said at one point, carp have soft mouths and you can pull the hook easily if you're not careful, so why are these guys setting the hook like they're trying to drive it through a piece of plywood?
@TheReelFishermen
5 жыл бұрын
Gotta get through the spongy tissue. Very soft surface but firmer on deeper into it. They get hooked a lot in the mouth so the hooksets are to get deeper through the softer tissue to the firmer. As you fight, the hook can work back out into the softer tissue. I wondered the same thing.

Ive watched LOTS of UK cap fishing where carp fishing is what bass fishing is here and never seen them do this, never seting the hook that hard, ever. Use a method lead with a hair rig, the fish sets ther hook themselves and you get better hook ups on the blow back.
@FishinNStuff

Jeff Burns I agree with all of you to a degree but being that I've done carp fishing like this , the reason ppl started setting the hook that is because they cast close to 100 yards at some lakes and there buffalo carp in most of the lakes in the southern United states. Buffalo carp bite very fun kind of packing at it and you have to catch em kn the bite , and remember when you have 100 yards of line out theres a lot of stretch you have to pull out because the fish isn't running with it , that's where that came from , but most the time all of those guys jerk to hard when theres no reason too
@mr.jingles7540

@ItzMikeOmg lol yeah ok. Method lead, hair rig for a blow back hook set is complicated how? It's not at all, and now back rig hooks up alot more than just a normal bite. Watch the catfish and carp channel for real carp fishing, he outfishes these guys handedly and guess what he uses mostly UK fishing techniques.

This is great... it’s cool to see how the paylake style & old world uk style have landed at the same place... uk is “method bait” on a method sinker, paylake is basically same bait, “packbait” on a no roll sinker... hook baits aren’t that different. Kix here vs boilies or corn there. However, what’s the reasoning for the 2 hooks vs 1?
@TheReelFishermen

I filmed this trip and don't know a whole lot about it but I'm pretty sure that the two hook rig is to help keep the pack bait from coming off when casting
@NC403Firefighter

It helps keep the bait on, gives it a little more to bite to. But also it’s gives you a chance to try two different flavor hookbaits if you’re not sure what they’re liking, doubles your chances basically in one cast.

Coming from the UK i now live in Texas and its so interesting to see the different Carp cultures. In the UK we like to go for big fish with light tackle and barbless hooks, It makes the playing of the fish great fun and challenging. Landing a 30lb Common with 12lb tackle is a hoot. This style of Carp fishing is very similar to Asia. Been here 4 years now and itching to get those rods out after watching this.

@shaunmiskelly8218

@@TheReelFishermen i read the comments and it looks like theyre complaining about the running strikes to set the hook. To give some balance to this its worth pointing out that European carp culture sees us carrying carp medic kits with us, using barbless hooks etc. however, we play these majestic creatures to the point of exhaustion before netting them at which point they just glide into the net, so i dont think anyone, european or American can sit in the high throne and preach to others. Our fisheries in the UK are so over fished that 'parrot mouth' (loss of 'lips') is a common sight now. As with any critisism people should get their own house in order first.
@grambo3343

@@shaunmiskelly8218 I disagree. There is zero point in a set like that. Carp whether in Europe or America set themselves. Plus in America we use barb and the fiah tend to fight harder due to not being used to getting caught. All that means is the set is even better. These guys are only setting that way for 2 reasons...lack of knowledge or just trying to prove they are real country boys haha. Pointless

This sort of carp fishing is like the worst sort of commercial carping in the UK (and rest of the world lol), not PROPER carp fishing :P I have to say the way those idiots set the hook is pathetic...if you got seen by a lake owner in the UK running back and striking like that....well the least you would get kicked off...possibly quite literally. david parton As someone who has fished paylakes with a method feeder/hair rig, it doesn’t work. The bait must be perfectly under the hook or around for most lakes, and a method feeder is just far enough away from the hook that the carp never get it. They always seem to end up taking the feeder rather than the hair rig
@davidparton1968

david parton I use drennan inline flat camo feeders with a 3-4 inch hook link. I have tried different lengths of link, fishing the feeder loose, and not using a feeder at all. I would expect it to work but it just doesn’t. I get hits/line pulls constantly but no hookups. I can see how elastic might help, but these fish aren’t getting the hook in the first place.

I wouldn’t be so certain you would win. I know y’all are good at carp fishing over there, but the carp here are used to eating what we feed them. They won’t touch a boilie. Now you could win a wild water tournament no problem here. But the carp in these pay-lakes feed in a very different manner compared to the carp you may be used to. Aside from this, the history of American Pay lake fishing is actually more extensive than that of European styles. Most carp fishing technology in Europe saw its first boom around the 70’s, while American carp fishing has been developing since the 50’s. (I may be wrong about this) Rather than focusing on precision of rigs and complex feeding methods, Americans have focused on targeting very specific nutrients, leading to a wide array of strange baits being produced. These can include rice, millet, grits, oats, soymeal, etc. Boilies, or method mix in comparison contain many nutrients, rather than a targeted mix, and typically won’t be consumed by an American Carp. I have tested both American and European rigs in pay-lakes, and American methods work better in America. That being said, it would most likely be the same with carp waters across the pond. I would assume you couldn’t catch much at all with American methods over there. In the end, we all fish for carp, and I would be very interested in seeing how alternative methods would work in both locations.
