Cool video thank for sharing. Just a few of quick comments. 1) Harbor Freight has a good set of diamond bits for a good price. They have an assortment of sizes and shapes that really offer a verity of carving options. 2) A dust mask is a good idea no matter what you are carving because the fine particles if creates can cause lesions on your lungs and lead to major repertory issues. 3) you can also find large chunks or bees wax where they sell candle supplies. not only does it act as a polish but it also acts as an organic sealant to help hold color in the areas you carved should you wish to use paint or markers.

Nothing will kill your diamond bits faster than running them dry!! They must be wet all the time. A shallow dish filled with water works. It's A bit messy, water flinging all over the place. Or make A dripper with an old bleach bottle.Get some fittings from the hard ware store. An on/off valve, plastic or brass - threaded, and A length of rubber, or plastic tubing. Drill A small hole into the bottom side of the bottle, using some SEAL ALL cement. screw the valve into the hole. Allow to cure, attach the tubing to the outlet.make A hanger to suspend the bottle. And fill with water. An old coat hanger bent to shape can direct the water on to the piece you are working on! adjust the water flow with the valve! Most important!!!!! Always use A flex shaft!!!!! Never never hold the dremmell in your hand!!!!!!! Water and electricity do not mix well!! unless you want your hair straightened.

To avoid electrical shock always use the flex shaft when you're adding water to your project. This does not guarantee you safety but it does keep the electrical parts farther from the water. Also the diamonds are held onto the bit by a metal binder which is fused to the shaft. When this heats up too much the diamonds will come off of the shaft rendering your bit useless. That is why you need to cool the bit with water on a regular basis. I prefer a drip system as I don't have to worry about it and can then concentrate on whatever it is that I am carving.

If you make my additional jewelry pieces, might I suggest using Renaissance Wax. Although it is not the cheapest, I find it to works extremely well (I use it on quite a number of different items), much better than beeswax. Also, the reason your rock turned red is because you were using a jeweler's rouge (just a very very tiny bit is needed) that needs to be polished off -- it will come off, but with a lot of polishing. Very nice video.

very helpful video! I took a stone carving class once several years ago and we used sand paper to polish our sculptures (by hand) is there a way to use the dremel to polish the rock to make it more shiny? They had us use turtle wax on our polished sculpture; we applied it thick, used a butane blow torch to heat the wax then a soft cloth to make it shine .. i have kept my sculpture outdoors for over 5 years now and it still looks shiny. I liked your video, you have a nice style and you get right to the point. Great job! Thanks!

The beeswax is an interesting idea. May I suggest working with the stone on top of a towel? Then the stone will stay still and the damp towel will help keep your rock cooler
@UpcycledStuff

Good idea, I'll have to give that a try!
@Nirrrina

Careful! If you hit the towel with the Dremel you could have it wrench the Dremel from your hand & possibly hurt you. It's one reason why you don't wear gloves. But a nice flat rubber placemat or bigger mat should work similar in holding it in place. As for cooling it I've recently heard that you can use an IV set up to dribble down the water as you work. The amount can even be easily adjusted too. But I'm not sure how that's done or how good it would be. But worth checking out if you work a lot with stone.

It's the Dremel 200. So it is not the top of the line and not the bottom of the barrel - CLOSE TO THE BOTTOM, but not the bottom. It works great for a lot of my upcycling projects!

I just bought a dremmel but I cant seem to keep the cutting of lings straight. Second of all I really dont know how to use the diamond drills I bought to go with the dremmel. Can you PLEASE show how each is used. A demo would be nice. I got some rocks from the river bed and played around with the dremmel set but its very disheartening. I cant stop the bit from going all over the place.

JUST AN FYI to help you.... on your video you said you go over your stone at least once before you use the water so it doesn't rub off your pencil lines. My carving tip for you: If you put a mist of hairspray over the pencil or ink then the water or your hands won't rub your pattern off. When done if you just run hot water over your project, BOOM hairspray will dissolve.

You may want to use a Medical IV bag to drip water on the stone while carving for so many reasons. Flow control (drip drip), keeping the burrs cool which make them last , better surface results to mention a few. Keep up the good work. Thanks for sharing this video. Kind Regards, Rafe~

try putting the rock in a pan just barely under water so you no longer have to keep pouring water. The bit is what needs to be in water for lubrication and cooling.

One more question...where did you get your diamond bit? I see price ranges all over the place, wondering where and how much you paid if you don't mind divulging.
@UpcycledStuff
10 жыл бұрын
Oh dear, I wish I could tell you...I tend to buy a bunch of them online at one time so they hang around for a bit before I need to purchase them again. I don't know what I paid for them. I do know that any bit or blade that I own that is covered in diamonds cost me more than I wanted to pay but always ends up being worth it! I recommend searching Amazon for bits, you can usually get them pretty inexpensively (for a diamond bit). I usually search by low price first but always check seller ratings before just buying the cheapest one I can find.

This is awesome. Thank you for this. Is there anything else that I should be aware of if I want to carve something into already polished and tumbled stones like these ones other than the fact that they would be more slippery? www.bigquartz.com/images/D/RoseQuartz.jpg
@UpcycledStuff
9 жыл бұрын
I'm glad you liked it. I haven't worked with tumbled rock. So, like you said it would be more slippery and would likely require a slow steady hand. If you don't already have a Dremel, there is a smaller Dremel product made solely for engraving. I haven't used it but have seen it in use and looks super easy to use on polished stone. Here's the link to the engraver: www.dremel.com/en-us/tools/Pages/ToolDetail.aspx?pid=290-01#.VKgWArl0xes Let me know how it goes.

This was amazing, I was watching Married At First Sight Jamie & Doug (for ever and ever apparently) and they bought the parts to make a concrete stepping stone for the baby they lost. Never having lost any children or having any in the first place I have nevertheless lost a litany of tears to beloved pets, so I thought well maybe you can get a kit, and I thought of "I wonder if you can carve flat rocks with a dremel tool " (I have the dremel tool already) . This was perfect, I just hope the diamond tool isn't to expensive. Going rock and diamond tool hunting tomorrow.

I know this is an old post but for the benefit of people who come to this video later, kinds of sand come from rock or shells, but sand particles are large enough to fall under gravity, dust is way smaller. You dont breath in sand when you go to the beach, but dust is airborn its that light.
