Great stuff! Thanks for sharing. I would add one more important insight - to not rotate nor counter-rotate upper body. For medium to long turns upper body should always follow the skis. When it comes to short turns upper body stays still. I can not wait to test my new gs cheater skis :)

@jonnyhifi

yes, I could only see 2 carved turns in the whole video, despite lots of talk about carving. They cannot be carved turns : as snow is jetting sideways. this is due to the ski not travelling and pointing in the same direction, resulting to displacing snow sideways, and jettting it out. It is very rare you see high level skiiers carving-just look for the jetted snow and you know "that's not carving". Carveing is easy but not very useful. Indeed Nothing wrong with slightly skidding turns : it's what world cup racers do all the time : they never carve. With carveing you lose the ability to direct the ski and tighten turns with nuance : high level skiing almost invariably involves being ever so slightly off the carve by a fraction of a degree --but being very very close. Indeed mid turn if the ski hooks up and starts carveing we all know the feeling of loss of nuanced control : you need to get it off the carve, to be able to continue control through the turn rather than just being in for the ride : it takes great skill. If you look at the track of a world cup racer's ski in the snow it is not a carved track, it will have ever so slight thickness--indeed it won't be on snow. A race prepared piste is hard ice : the only way they can create those jets of what looks like snow is by subtle steered non carved skiddy turns. I wish people would stop going on about carved turns !! I'm not suggesting that massively sliding sideways which so many low level skiiers do is useful either : it isn't and is very very difficult to get away from, and spells death on ice. "shaped" and controlled turns are what is useful, and this skier is doing. The sensation of a carved turn "rail roads" for example is very different - nice, fun, but not very useful, esp as you lose the ability to tighten turns beyond a certain amount. You could never ski a slalom course with carved turns. The course will be set so you can't, otherwise high level skiing is not being tested. If you don't believe me : compare the turn radius of the ski, and the turn radii created by high level skiiers at the ends of their turns. They cannot be carved. They use a combination of great edge angle by the end of each turn : built up forces putting the ski into extreme camber, but also : rotational input keeping the ski from hooking up, and that input has to be very precisely, dynamically applied and changed continuously throughout the turn, not too much, not too little at each moment. as the turn progresses, as the edge angle increases, the forces that can be supported increase, so the radius of the turn continuously decreases right up till the point of release when it is at a minimimum, with high level turns having continuously decreasing radius through them . they are like commas, not circular.

Unfortunately, the ski video recommends what's called an "up move" to transition from one turn to the next. You're gonna be *quite limited* in where you can apply that technique. It's fine on gentle, intermediate terrain on good snow. But when it gets steeper or icier, there's gonna be problems. The technique described here is neither fast enough nor nimble enough to ski the terrain the way you would like to. Instead of standing up at the end of the turn, *flex to release.* For more, search youtube for "retraction turns."

Flex to Release means and teaches Nothing! If you want people to Learn, you have to speak in words that are easily understood. All you Think about at the end of the turn is getting off your downhill foot and balancing on the arch of your uphill foot as you allow your upper body to fall down the hill and put it back in the fall Line. The uphill ski will roll over onto the arch and the ski will turn as designed. You can collapse your downhill leg but you Have to Think of getting up on your uphill foot so your upper body will fall away down the hill. That's how you get your legs to change angle from one side to the other.

Is that the downhill ski at the beginning of a turn or the end of a turn? Outside/Inside ski does not change during a turn. Uphill/Downhill ski does.
@JB91710

@@ericjensen3662 Now you stop being a Thinker and stick to being a Follower like all the people who worship these so called KZitem Ski Instructors. Simply put, at the end of a turn your are balanced on the arch of your downhill foot. When you want to make a new turn, you make sure your upper body is facing and leaning Down The Hill by placing it back in the Fall Line and Instantly get off your downhill foot and balance on the arch of your Uphill foot. Your upper body will fall down the hill as your skis continue across the hill. Your leg angle will change from one side to the other and your uphill foot will roll over and the ski will turn. To carve a turn, you take your weight off your downhill foot, lift that cheek and slide it over onto the edge of a barstool. The farther you slide it over, the steeper your leg angle will be and the ski will bend more, grip better and turn quicker. By lifting your cheek you are forcing your upper body to stay vertical.

Fanta The mistake is thinking of rolling your knees and ankles over. If you focus on just that, the rest of your body will not be in sync. Assuming you have modern skis and are on packed powder or groomed terrain, I'd say there are three things to remember. 1. At the end of one turn and the beginning of the new turn make sure your knees and weight are forward. Think of the Front of your skis turning into the turn, not the tails sliding around. Just like the front tires on a car. You think of the the tips steering into the turn, you don't Drift through the turn with the tails. 2. Then get your weight OFF the downhill ski quick! The ski you are on at the end of a turn. 3. Then throw your hip down the hill and towards the direction of the new turn. With your weight on one ski, your knees and ankles will fall into place on their own when you thrust your hip into the turn. Being aggressive is very important. Go for it! You won't be able to do it if you are timid. The design of the ski will hold you up along with centrifugal force to counter your lean into the turn with your hip. These things have to be done in a 123, 123, 123 rhythm. Not one at a time Hope this helps.

sounds like you don't have enough speed, your upper body is not "counter-rotating", or you are keeping you weight on both skis equally. Remember to keep your upper body forward and face downhill.
@rogerpalin5864

If the tail of the ski follows the tip (and leaves two rails in the snow) it’s carving (and gripping the snow). If you rotate/steer the feet/skis, the tail of the ski takes a different path and it’s now skidding. Nothing wrong with skidding, the vast majority of skiers do it to remain in control. The use of skid is a skill. Once it’s fully acquired as a skill then you can remove it/not employ it and then grip/carve. Unskilled steering of the feet/skis will result in a skid, but this is not a skill, it’s the result of an action.

"The more force you put through the cuff of your boot the tighter your turn will be" - no, that's called boot crushing and it causes the outside ski to down-stem through the end of the turn.

You want to feel what Jody said at the initiation, then feel the pressure through the ball of your foot as you come through the first third of the turn. As you reach the fall-line you need to feel equal pressure along the length of your whole foot and maintain that through the rest of the turn.
@CECS1
7 жыл бұрын
Can you "down stem" a ski without pressuring the front cuff? Can you decrease the radius of a carve without pressuring the cuff? Granted pressure control and edging skill blending plays a key role in the radius achieved with the ski, but without directional pressure control and progressive tipping, you can not effectively bend the ski to produce a tighter radius.
@TRODD12321
7 жыл бұрын
You can down-stem without pressuring the cuff, although it's atypical. You can reduce the radius of a turn without pressuring the cuff. The last bit you wrote was bang on, but I don't understand what point you're trying to make, or its pertinence to the previous questions.

0:25 This is a perfect example of the ignorance of the world's ski instructors. He FEELS his ankles roll over so he tells YOU to roll them over. 0:30 Three parts with No definition of how to make those three parts happen. Initiation means nothing, Shaping, no meaning, Finish, how? 0:45 This is where the Ignorance really begins. Ask an orthopedic surgeon about rolling knees and ankles sideways. It looks like they are rolling so that's what he tells you. That's not Teaching. You could have figured that out just by looking. If knees don't bend sideways, then what is happening to make them lean over? Go to 0:47 and put the video on .25 speed. As you first see him, he is standing/balancing on his left arch and his upper body is following the skis across the hill. "When he wants to start a new turn, instantly gets off that downhill foot and allows his upper body to fall down the hill.' That makes his uphill foot roll over onto his arch and the ski turns as designed. he just balances on that arch through the turn. 1:16 Watch for it here. He gets off his left foot and steps on his right and makes his upper body go down the hill. NOTICE! I said nothing about his knees. He is focusing on the result of what I said and tells you to Do That. That is NOT TEACHING. That is Monkey See, Monkey Do. Mimicking. That will Not help you when you pick up speed because he did Not teach you How to position your upper body and when and how to change your weight to allow the skis to turn. Look at his body stop and in your peripheral vision, see his skis continue across the hill. That, is what changes the leg angle from one side to the other, not bending your knees sideways. 1:20 "At the finish of each turn you position your upper body Down the hill and get off your downhill foot." Is he going to say that or JUST tell you to roll your knees over? 1:30 Watch his upper body follow his skis and then Stop, let the skis go out from underneath him, get off his right foot and let his upper body go down the hill as he balances on his left arch. Again, I said nothing about the knees. 1:43 NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! 100000000000000000000% Wrongggggggggggggggggggg! This goes to show you how Blind the worlds instructors are. That Sitting feeling is NOT to the Rear! It is to the Side! You are standing between two Barstools. You want to rest a cheek on the edge of one stool. You take you weight off your Right foot, lift your Right cheek and set in on the edge of the Right barstool. Lifting your cheek keeps your upper body vertical. Try this on the arm of a heavy chair or couch and look at the angle of your leg. Now compare that to a racer going around a gate as they come straight at you from above. 2:06 This ain't carving! None of this is carving. 2:30 Watch this in slow motion and remember what I said. Look for the cheek on the barstool and then watch him switch to the other side and change his weight. Sponsored by the PSIA who never knew how to teach skiing. I figured that out in 1971.
