'Bosting' is a carvers term for finding the underlying form and flow on which later modelling will sit and usually consists of a number of 'passes': the block loses its squareness; ghostly shapes emerge, becoming ever clearer.
A good rule of thumb at this stage: Keep everything soft and simple.
